Taha Ayah 115
Quran 20:113 — And thus have We sent it down an Arabic Quran, and We have explained therein the threats in various ways, that they may guard (against evil) or that it may produce a reminder for them.
99-/7054 — Ali ibn Ibrahim said: It means what will occur concerning the matter of al-Qa’im (peace be upon him) and al-Sufyani.
Quran 20:114 — Supremely exalted therefore is Allah, the King, the Truth. And do not make haste with the Quran before its revelation is made complete to you, and say: O my Lord! increase me in knowledge.
99-/7055 — Ali ibn Ibrahim said: When the Quran was sent down to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), he would hasten to recite it before the completion of the verse and its meaning was revealed; so Allah sent down: “And do not make haste with the Quran before its revelation is made complete to you,” that is, before it is finished being recited to you, “and say: My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
Quran 20:115 — And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before, but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.
99-/7056 — Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Mufaddal ibn Salih, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before, but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.” He said: “We charged him concerning Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) and the Imams (peace be upon them) after him; yet he left it and did not have the resolve that they are thus. And those called ‘Possessors of Determination’ (ulu l-‘azm) were named so because He charged them concerning Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), the legatees after him, the Mahdi and his conduct; and their resolve united upon that being so, and upon acknowledging it.”
And it was narrated by ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Mufaddal ibn Salih, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), similarly. [1]
And Ibn Babawayh narrated it: from his father (may Allah have mercy on him), from Sa‘d ibn ‘Abd Allah, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Mufaddal ibn Salih, from Jabir ibn Yazid, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam…,” and he mentioned the hadith to its end. [2]
99-/7057 — Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ishaq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Hamdani narrated to us, he said: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal, from his father, from Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl, from Abu Hamzah al-Thumali, from Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Baqir (peace be upon them), who said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, charged Adam (peace be upon him) not to approach the tree. When the time came which was in the knowledge of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, that he would eat from it, he forgot and ate from it; and that is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: ‘And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before, but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.’”
99-/7058 — Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad, from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd Allah, from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa al-Qummi, from Muhammad ibn Sulayman, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “‘And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before’—words concerning Muhammad, ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and the Imams from their progeny (peace be upon them)—‘but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.’ By Allah, thus was it sent down to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).’”
99-/7059 — Al-Mufid, through his isnad, from Humran ibn A‘yan, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Allah took the covenant from the prophets, and said: “Am I not your Lord, and this is Muhammad, My Messenger, and ‘Ali, the Commander of the Faithful?” [3] They said: “Yes,” so prophethood was established for them. Then He took the covenant from the Possessors of Determination: “I am your Lord, Muhammad is My Messenger, ‘Ali is the Commander of the Faithful, and the legatees after him are the custodians of My command and the treasurers of My knowledge; and by the Mahdi I will grant victory to My religion, I will manifest My dominion by him, I will take vengeance on My enemies by him, and I will be worshipped through him, willingly or unwillingly.” [4] They said: “We acknowledge—our Lord—and bear witness.” Adam (peace be upon him) neither denied nor acknowledged, so determination was established for these five concerning the Mahdi (peace be upon him), and Adam did not have determination to acknowledge; and that is the word of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: “And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before, but he forgot; and We did not find in him any determination.”
99-/7060 — Ibn Shahr Ashub: from al-Baqir (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Exalted is He: “And certainly We gave a commandment to Adam before.” He said: “Words concerning Muhammad, ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and the Imams from their progeny. Thus it was sent down to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).”
Quran 20:116 — And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis (did it not). He refused.
99-/7061 — Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad, from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from one who informed him, from ‘Ali ibn Ja‘far, who said: I heard Abu l-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) saw Taym and ‘Adiyy and Banu Umayyah mounting his pulpit, it distressed him. So Allah, Exalted, sent down a Quran by which he could console himself: ‘And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis refused.’ Then He revealed to him: ‘O Muhammad, I commanded and was not obeyed, so do not grieve when you command and are not obeyed concerning your legatee.’” And the story of Adam (peace be upon him)—the narrations concerning it have already preceded in Surat al-Baqarah and al-A‘raf. [1]
Quran 20:121-122 — Then they both ate of it, so their evil inclinations became manifest to them, and they both began to cover themselves with the leaves of the garden, and Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him). Then his Lord chose him, so He turned to him and guided (him).
99-/7062 — Ibn Babawayh said: Ahmad ibn Ziyad ibn Ja‘far al-Hamdani (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Husayn ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Hisham the scribe, and ‘Ali ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Warraq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us. They said: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim narrated to us; he said: al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Barmaki narrated to us; he said: Abu l-Salt al-Harawi narrated to us. He said: When al-Ma’mun gathered for ‘Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (peace be upon them) the adherents of doctrines from among the people of Islam and from other religions—the Jews, Christians, Magians, Sabians, and the rest of the people of doctrines—no one stood up except that he bound him with his proof, as if a stone had been stuffed in his mouth. ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jahm stood up to him and said: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, do you affirm the infallibility of the prophets?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then what do you say about the saying of Allah, Exalted is He: ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord, so his life became evil (to him)’?” Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “Woe to you, O ‘Ali, fear Allah! Do not attribute abominations to the prophets of Allah, and do not misinterpret the Book of Allah.” [2]
