Al-Hijr Ayah 21

99-/5819 - Al-‘Ayyāshī, from Bakr b. Muḥammad al-Azdī, from his uncle ‘Abd al-Salām, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), said: “O ‘Abd al-Salām, be wary of people and of your own self.” I said: May I be your ransom, as for people, I can manage to be wary of them; but as for my own self, how? He said: “The foul one who eavesdrops on hearing comes to you and eavesdrops, then goes out in human form and says: ‘‘Abd al-Salām said.’” I said: May I be your ransom, this is something for which there is no remedy. He said: “It is so.”

Qur’an 15:19-20 (M. H. Shakir): “And the earth, We have stretched it out and made in it firm mountains and caused to grow in it of every suitable thing. And We have made in it means of subsistence for you and for him for whom you are not the suppliers.”

99-/5820 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said regarding His saying: “And the earth, We have stretched it out and made in it firm mountains”—that is, the mountains—“and We caused to grow in it of everything in due measure; and We made in it means of subsistence for you and for those for whom you are not the providers”: He said, For every kind of animal We have determined something in a measured amount.

99-/5821 - He said: And in the narration of Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, “And We caused to grow in it of everything in due measure”: “Indeed Allah, blessed and exalted, has made to grow in the mountains gold, silver, precious stones, brass, copper, iron, lead, kohl, orpiment, and the like of that—none of which is sold except by weight.”

Qur’an 15:21 (M. H. Shakir): “And there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it, and We do not send it down but in a known measure.”

99-/5822 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, regarding His saying “And there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it, and We do not send it down but in a known measure,” said: The “treasury” is the water that descends from the sky, by which there grows for every kind of animal what Allah has decreed for it of sustenance.

99-/5823 - Ibn al-Fārisī in (al-Rawḍah): It is narrated from Ja‘far b. Muḥammad, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), that he said: “In the Throne there is the likeness (model) of everything Allah has created on land and sea”—and he said—“and this is the interpretation of His saying: ‘And there is not a thing but with Us are the treasures of it.’ And indeed, between one leg of the Throne and the second leg is the fluttering of a swift bird for a distance of a thousand years. The Throne is clothed every day in seventy [1] hues of light; no creature among Allah’s creatures is able to look at it, and all things in relation to the Throne are like a ring in a desert. And Allah has an angel called Ḥizqā’īl; he has eighteen thousand wings, the distance between one wing and another is five hundred years. A thought occurred to him, and he said: ‘Is there anything above the Throne?’ So Allah increased for him an equal number of wings again, so that he had thirty-six thousand wings, the distance between one wing and another being five hundred years. Then Allah revealed to him: ‘O Angel, fly!’ So he flew for the measure of twenty thousand years and did not attain the top of one leg of the Throne. Then Allah doubled for him in wing and strength and commanded him to fly; so he flew for the measure of twenty thousand years and did not attain it either. Then Allah revealed to him: ‘O Angel, if you were to fly until the blowing of the Trumpet, with your wings and your strength, you would not reach the shank of the Throne.’ The angel said: ‘Glory be to my Most High Lord (Subḥāna Rabbī al-A‘lā).’ Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High’ [2]. The Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: ‘Make it part of your prostration.’”

99-/5824 - Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb, from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from Hārūn b. Muslim, from Mas‘adah b. Ṣadaqah, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), said: “When rain first began to fall, ‘Alī (peace be upon him) would stand in it until his head, beard, and clothes were soaked. It was said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, seek shelter, seek shelter. He said: This is water newly in contact with the Throne. Then he began to relate, saying: Beneath the Throne there is a sea containing water that brings forth the sustenance of living creatures. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, wills to bring forth for them by it what He wills, as a mercy from Him to them, He reveals to it, so it pours down as He wills from heaven to heaven until it reaches the lowest heaven—so I think—then He casts it to the clouds; and the clouds are like a sieve. Then Allah reveals to the wind: Grind it and melt it till it dissolves like water, then go with it to such-and-such a place and rain upon them. Then it becomes such-and-such a torrent [3] and otherwise, and it drips upon them in the manner He commands it. Not a single drop falls except that with it is an angel until he places it in its place, and no drop of rain has descended from the sky except in a fixed number and a known measure—except what was on the day of the Flood in the time of Nūḥ (peace be upon him), for then there descended gushing water without measure and without number.”

99-/5825 - And from him, he said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) related to me: “My father (peace be upon him) said to me: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said that the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has made the clouds sieves for the rain; they melt the hail until it becomes water so that it does not harm anything it strikes. And what you see in them of hail and thunderbolts is a chastisement from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with which He afflicts whom He wills of His servants.” Then he said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: Do not point at the rain, nor at the new crescent, for Allah dislikes that.” Al-Ḥimyarī has narrated that in (Qurb al-Isnād) with his chain, from Mas‘adah b. Ṣadaqah, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) [1].
