7. The Favor of the Imam of the Age (may peace be upon him) toward the Establishment of Husaini Gatherings

The late Ayatullah Sayyid Husain Ha’iri Kermanshahi (d. 1355 AH), nephew of the late Ayatullah Haj Sayyid Muhammad Fasharki (d. 1315 AH), narrates that on the threshold of Muharram 1345 AH, a sayyid stranger from Najaf al-Ashraf came to Kermanshah and entered my home. It became known that for twelve years he had undertaken spiritual exercises in Masjid Sahla, and he summoned no rebellious jinn (because they lie), but rather summoned the spirits of scholars and asked them questions of need.

Marhum Ha’iri asked him: “I wish we knew whether these gatherings that we hold in the ten days of Ashura are accepted by the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) or not?”

After making supplication, he replied: “Yes! This gathering is accepted, and on the day of Tasua, the blessed person of His Holiness Baqiyyatullah (may our souls be sacrificed for him) attends this gathering.”

Then he said: “The preacher who normally comes at the last moment each day, that day will arrive early in the morning and instead of reciting rawdah (lamentation) will turn to tawassul (beseeching the intercession) of the Imam, and the gathering will reach a special spiritual state.”

This conversation took place on the fifth of Muharram between Aqa Ha’iri and that sayyid stranger.

Marhum Ha’iri says: “On the day of Tasua, at the beginning of the morning, suddenly that famous preacher known as Ashraf al-Wa’izin (Sayyid Akbar Shah) arrived. I asked him: ‘What a surprise that you have come at this hour?’ He said: ‘Today I do not want to go to any gathering and wish to save my voice for the day of Ashura, but I could not leave your gathering without a sermon, so I came to recite a few words of rawdah.’”

When he sat on the pulpit, he began: “O lost one of the deserts…”

The gathering entered a special spiritual state.

I asked Sayyid, “What news from the Mawla?”

He said: “He has come, sitting in a circle before the pulpit.”

I went towards the pulpit, and saw several people in local dress seated in a circle. I gave salam, one of them replied, and I understood that he was Mawla himself, since the others refrained from responding out of respect.

I offered my welcome, and he said: “Return to your place.”

The entire gathering turned to pure weeping and supplication. The preacher was not reciting formal rawdah, but was rather speaking of separation from the beloved, and people were striking their heads and faces.

I kept watch on that group with my own eyes, then suddenly I saw they were no longer present. Neither did I notice them entering, nor did I notice them leaving. But from the signs that the sayyid had earlier given, which came true precisely, I became certain that the gathering had gained the satisfaction of the Mawla and had been honored by his blessed presence.

The Hazrat and his companions appeared generally under forty years of age, and all were dressed in local clothing.

I first heard this story from the late Ayatullah Haj Sayyid Rida Sadr (d. 1415 AH). Ayatullah Sadr said: “I was nine years old when Marhum Sayyid Husain Ha’iri had come to Qom and recounted this story to my father, the late Ayatullah Sayyid Sadr al-Din Sadr (d. 1373 AH), one of the three great authorities, and I heard it there.”

So according to this calculation, Ayatullah Sadr must have heard this directly from him in about 1347 AH, which would be roughly a year after that honorable vision.

The author says: The reason Ayatullah Sadr narrated this story for me was that I had asked him: “Is it possible for a person to be blessed with the presence of the Imam of the Age (may God hasten his reappearance) and recognize him while he is present?”

He replied: “Yes.”

Then he gave the story of Marhum Sayyid Husain Ha’iri as his proof.

The late Nahaavandi has also narrated this story in more detail, directly from him【1】.

In conclusion, it is worth mentioning that the famous preacher of that gathering, the late Sayyid Ali Akbar Ashraf al-Wa’izin (known as Akbar Shah, d. 1351 AH), was the father of the late Sultan al-Wa’izin (d. 1391 AH)【2】.
