97. The Healing of the Young Man from the Āl Kabbah Family through Tawassul to Qamar Banī Hāshim (a.s.)
One of the well-known families of Najaf al-Ashraf is the Āl Kabbah family.
A young man from this family, in the prime of his youth, was afflicted by an unknown disease and passed away. The second and third sons of this family also died in succession from the same illness.
Later, Allah granted them another son. When this child reached the same age, he too was afflicted with the same disease. Within a week, his body deteriorated and he approached death.
The mother of this young man went to the holy shrine of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.) and made tawassul (supplication through intercession) for her son's healing.
That night, a neighbor of the Āl Kabbah family in Karbala saw a dream:
He was present in a gathering in the presence of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.). The Hazrat sent someone to the presence of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and requested him to pray for the young man.
The man saw himself reach the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and witnessed the messenger delivering the message of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl.
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Tell my ‘Abbās that the life of this youth has come to its end. He will depart from this world tonight.”
Then the scene changed. The man again saw himself before Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.), who once again sent the messenger back to the Prophet ﷺ, saying:
“Tell the Prophet that the mother of this youth has made tawassul to me. What answer should I give to his mother?”
The Prophet ﷺ responded:
“The death of this youth has already been decreed. Do not insist in this matter.”
Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.) then said:
“Tell the Prophet: Either ask Allah to grant this youth healing and a new life —
or remove the title ‘Bāb al-Ḥawāʾij’ (The Door to Needs) from me, and let people no longer turn to me for their requests!”
At that moment, the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands to the sky and prayed for the youth’s healing.
The man woke up from his sleep, certain that the youth would be cured.
He waited until the call to Fajr prayer echoed from the minarets of the ḥaram, then rushed to the Āl Kabbah home.
He knocked on the door — and to his amazement, the same young man, who had been turned toward the qibla the previous night in anticipation of death, opened the door.
His face had completely changed, glowing with life.
His body, which had severely deteriorated, was now fully restored to the condition it had been in a week earlier.

This story was narrated once by the late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Shaykh ʿAbd al-Husain Wāʿiẓī from our pulpit, and another time by the late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Sayyid Muḥammad Kāẓim Qazwīnī at our home.
In both gatherings, a number of Najaf’s scholars were present — all of whom knew the family personally and were aware of the story.
