58. Imam Husain’s (a.s.) Favor toward the Pilgrims of the Days of ‘Āshūrā
Āqāy Sayyid Ḥusain Moulavi, on Thursday, 4/7/1392 Shamsi (solar), recounted for me a number of favors of the noble Imam during the days of ‘Āshūrā, among which I mention the following:
(1) In the past, on the morning of ‘Āshūrā, we used to distribute sherbet near the ghusl facility in Karbala. We would pour about 20–25 kilos of sugar, get water from the neighbors, and offer it to the mourners.
Sometimes we noticed that the faces of some mourners were bloody, and the cups would become bloody as well, which raised doubt about purity and impurity. So we decided from the following year to serve food instead.
Earlier, the Najafi group would distribute food in the Husainiyya of the Najafis outside the city, in the Suwaq neighborhood.
The great scholar, the late Sayyid ‘Abd al-Razzāq Muqarram (1316–1391 AH), used to recite the Maqtal for them, and then Shaykh Muḥammad Kāshī would recite elegies for them.
The crowd would become so packed that sometimes the doors and windows of the Husainiyya would break.
We decided to distribute food in Karbala on the night of ‘Āshūrā so that the Husainiyya of the Najafis would be less crowded.
The late Muqarram was a close friend of my father, and he said to my father: Is your son not afraid of Imam Husain (a.s.), wanting to create division among the mourners?
My father had answered: If my son wants to cause division, may Imam Husain break his back.
And I added: Not only break my back, but may I die young if I create division.
Āqāy Sayyid Hāshim Ṣarrāf was the leader of the Najafi group. They would, on the night of ‘Āshūrā, while performing chest-beating, go from the tent station to the shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.), then move to the courtyard of Hazrat Qamar Banī Hāshim (a.s.). Therefore they would eat two or three hours after maghrib prayer.
But we served food immediately after maghrib prayer.
The late Muqarram, after seeing our program, the second year came himself to our group, which was known as Jumhūr al-Gharī, had dinner, and said to me: May God bless you, my son — you did a valuable deed.
One night on ‘Āshūrā, we cooked 25 kilos of rice and served food. They told me: The Najafi group is coming toward your group — we have placed a 30-kilo cauldron of food there.
I was serving food, never lifting the lid from the pot. I would dish out food onto trays serving four or five people each.
Our place of serving food was very large, twice the size of the Imam Riḍā mosque of Qom.
The entire place was covered with tablecloths; the Najafi group sat down and were served.
One of my friends came forward and lifted the lid from the pot, asking: How much food did you take out of this pot?
We saw that not even a fourth of the pot was empty yet!
After that, we served another 10–15 trays of food, and then the food finished.

(2) Throughout the year, every Friday, we used to collect money for feeding people in Karbala. One person would give five fils, another fifty fils.
Sometimes I would pass by the shop of one of my friends, and if he had not contributed that week, I would write in my notebook: “This week, so-and-so was fooled by the Devil.”
Before Muḥarram, we would buy a number of sheep, and send them with the transport that carried our equipment to Karbala.
In the street of Qiblah, near the shrine of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.), at the Husainiyya of Karim Khan, opposite the municipal mosque which was very large, we would set up our station and stay there.
One year, the weather was very hot. One of the young men named Ṣāliḥ climbed up on top of a water tank; one of the planks broke, and he fell from a height of five to six meters onto his head on the ground, and another young man who was helping him also fell on top of him.
A plank four meters long fell on his head as well.
We called out to Imam Husain (a.s.): “Mawlajan! We have come here for you!”
At once, Ṣāliḥ stood up, picked up his hammer to climb back up the ladder. We held his hand and prevented him, and he slept until night without any problem arising for him.
