Concerning the Special Characteristics of His Abode After His Martyrdom
Regarding the special characteristics of his abode after his martyrdom and before his burial:
As for the special characteristic of the state of his martyrdom, it is this:
Every Prophet (a.s.) or Imam (a.s.) who was martyred was either killed by the sword or poisoned in his own house, or in a city, or in a prayer niche (miḥrāb), or while lying in a basin (ṭasht).
But it never occurred for any one of them that he should be martyred upon the bare earth of a desolate wilderness.
How immense is your tragedy, O my Master.
As for after his martyrdom:
His noble body was taken up to the fifth heaven and then returned to the land of Karbala.
There it remained upon the ground for three days.
As for his blessed head, at times it was upon hands, [173]
At times upon spears, [174]
At times hanging upon a tree, [175]
At times upon the threshold of the house of the accursed Yazid, [176]
At times upon the gate of Damascus, [177]
At times in a tray before Ibn Ziyad, [178]
And at times in a basin before Yazid. [179]
It was carried from city to city, from Karbala to Damascus.
Some have said that it was taken from Damascus to Egypt, then to Madinah;
Others have said from Damascus back to Karbala;
And others have said from Damascus to the heavens. [180]
The translator says:
The author (may Allah exalt his station) omitted to mention the earthen jar (ajānah) in the house of Shimr, [181]
The oven (tannūr) in the house of Khawli, [182]
The monastery of the monks, [183]
And the chest of the guards. [184]
“There is no power and no strength except through Allah.”
