The Attachment Arising from Greatness and Lofty Rank
The Attachment Arising from Greatness and Lofty Rank
The fourth type is the attachment arising from greatness and exalted rank.
This is because the calamity that befalls great and noble individuals—especially when it is contrary to their dignity and lofty station—naturally causes tenderness of heart and sorrow, even if the afflicted person is a stranger,
or even a disbeliever.
The conduct of kings toward their enemies has been based upon this principle, as is well known from the story of Alexander and Dārā. [540]
The ruling of the Sacred Law likewise proceeds upon this principle.
For this reason, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) spread out his own garment for ʿAdī ibn Ḥātim, despite the fact that he was still a disbeliever, and said:
“Honor the noble one of a people when he has been brought low.” [541]
Likewise, Ameer al-Muʾmineen (a.s.) did not take the garments of ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Wudd as spoils, nor did he even take his armor, despite the fact that it was without equal.
He said:
“Since he was the chief of his people, I did not wish to violate his dignity.” [542]
Similarly, the Sacred Law has established a special consideration for the daughters of kings. If they are taken captive, they are given a choice and are not exposed to buying and selling in the marketplace. [543]
Therefore, let us lament like servants for their master and lord.
For he was great and majestic, yet his sanctity was violated.
His body was stripped naked.
His family was taken captive and led from city to city.
People even aspired to reduce them to slavery.
And whoever does not weep over such a calamity is far removed from true humanity.
