The Bestowal of the Prophet’s Spirit, Heart, and Intellect to Imam Husain (a.s.)
The Bestowal of the Prophet’s Spirit, Heart, and Intellect to Imam Husain (a.s.)
As for the bestowal of the spirit, heart (fuʾād), and intellect of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) to that noble Imam (a.s.), the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) used to say:
“Imam Husain (a.s.) is my spirit, the fruit of my heart, and the cause of the tranquility and peace of my soul.” [342]
As for the bestowal of his sight and strength, he would say:
“Whenever I look at him, my hunger departs.” [343]
As for the bestowal of his sense of smell and his eyes, he would say:
“Imam Husain (a.s.) is my sweet basil and the light of my two eyes.” [344]
As for the back of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), it served as a mount for Imam Husain (a.s.), not merely once but repeatedly, in a manner that was extraordinary.
At times, while the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was in prostration during congregational prayer, Imam Husain (a.s.) would climb upon his back. The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would prolong his prostration until the child descended of his own accord.
The companions would be astonished at the length of the prostration and would ask whether revelation had descended.
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would reply:
“No, but my son had mounted upon my back.” [345]
As for the shoulders of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), they were a place for Imam Husain (a.s.), for he would carry him and Imam Hasan (a.s.) upon his shoulders and walk through the streets and marketplaces.
The companions would offer to take the children from him, but he would say:
“What excellent riders they are!”
And at times Jibra’il (a.s.) would act on his behalf and carry Imam Husain (a.s.) upon his shoulders. [346]
As for the lap of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), it was the seat of Imam Husain (a.s.).
Thus, at the time of his birth, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said:
“O Asma’, bring me my son.”
She replied:
“We have not yet cleaned him.”
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said:
“Will you purify him? Allah has already purified and cleansed him.” [347]
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) took care of him, fed him with his thumb, played with him, recited lullabies for him [348], and spoke to him in the language of children.
Some companions, out of amazement, criticized him for this.
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:
“What is hidden from you—meaning the excellence of Imam Husain (a.s.) and my love for him—is far greater than what you have seen.” [349]
It is clear that all of these words and actions were by Divine command, including the prolonging of the prostration, carrying him upon the shoulders, running with him in the streets, going out to receive him, and interrupting sermons for him. The wisdom behind these matters will be mentioned later, Allah willing.
As for the lips of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), he would constantly kiss Imam Husain (a.s.) together with Imam Hasan (a.s.), smell them, and hold them close to himself for long periods.
He would say:
“These two sons are my two fragrant flowers.” [350]
It is commonly related that one day he kissed the mouth of Imam Hasan (a.s.) and the throat of Imam Husain (a.s.), whereupon Imam Husain (a.s.) became upset and complained to his mother.
However, I have not found this report in the narrations.
What I have found is that he would sometimes kiss Imam Husain (a.s.) upon the throat, at other times upon the forehead, at other times over his entire body, and at times he would uncover his stomach and kiss above his navel,
at times his teeth [351], and at times his lips.
This was one of the manifest miracles of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
As for the reason for these kisses, he would say:
“I kiss the places where the swords will strike.” [352]
And he would weep.
However, the reason for kissing the teeth and the area above the navel was not known at that time.
Later it became clear: the reed-stick that struck his blessed teeth and the three-pronged arrow that pierced him.
