The Elegy of Imam Hasan (a.s.) in Mourning for His Brother Imam Husain (a.s.)

The Elegy of Imam Hasan (a.s.) in Mourning for His Brother Imam Husain (a.s.).

The eleventh gathering was that of Imām al-Ḥasan (a.s.). He was the reciter of the elegy, while Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) and the members of the Ahl al-Bayt were the listeners.

This occurred when Imām al-Ḥasan (a.s.) had been poisoned, the effects of the poison had spread throughout his body, and he was in his final moments.

Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) came to him, embraced him, and wept.

Imām al-Ḥasan (a.s.) said:

“There will be no day like your day.

Thirty thousand men will gather against you. All of them will claim to be Muslims and will consider themselves from the nation of our grandfather.

They will unite to kill you, shed your blood, violate your sanctity, and take your women and children captive.

In that tragedy, the sky will rain blood and ashes.

Indeed, everything will weep for you, even the wild animals of the desert and the fish of the sea.” [651]

The twelfth gathering was that of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) at his grave.

This took place when Walīd demanded allegiance from Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (a.s.) for the stubborn Yazīd.

One night, Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) went to the shrine of his grandfather, greeted him, and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, I am Imam Husain (a.s.), the son of Fāṭimah (a.s.), your son and the son of your son, whom you entrusted to this nation.

Bear witness, O Prophet of Allah, that they have abandoned me, neglected me, and failed to protect me.

This is my complaint to you regarding them until I meet you.”

Then he began praying.

Walīd sent someone to the house of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) to find out whether he had left Madinah.

When they informed him that the Imām was not at home, he said:

“Praise be to Allah, Imam Husain (a.s.) has left and I have not become involved in shedding his blood.”

When morning came, Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) returned home.

On the second night, he again went to the grave of his grandfather and offered several units of prayer.

Then he said:

“O Allah, this is the grave of Your Prophet, and I am the son of the daughter of Your Prophet.

A matter has arisen for me which You know well.

O Allah, I love what is right and reject what is wrong.

O Allah, I ask You by the right of the one buried in this grave to choose for me that which contains Your pleasure and the pleasure of Your Prophet (s.a.w.a.).”

Then he wept for a long time until near dawn.

He placed his head upon the grave and fell asleep.

In his dream he saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) coming toward him accompanied by many angels.

The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) embraced him, kissed him between the eyes, and said:

“O my beloved, it is as though I see you very soon covered in your own blood.

I see you being slaughtered in the land of Karbalāʾ while thirsty, and they will not give you water.

Yet despite this, they hope for my intercession!

May Allah never grant it to them.

O my beloved Imam Husain (a.s.), your father, mother, and brother have already come to me, and all of them long for your arrival.

A station awaits you in Paradise which you cannot attain except through martyrdom.”

Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) looked toward his grandfather and said:

“O grandfather, I have no desire for this world. Take me with you.”

The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:

“That cannot be.

You must return and attain the rank of martyrdom and the immense reward that comes with it, so that on the Day of Judgment you may be gathered with your father, mother, and your uncles, and together you will enter Paradise.”

Then Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) awoke from his sleep and narrated the dream to his family and relatives.

They all began to cry and lament.

There was no family in the East or the West of the world whose grief, sorrow, and weeping on that day exceeded that of the Ahl al-Bayt. [652]
