Al-Isra Ayah 86

99-/_1 - al-Kafi 2:1/410.

He said: It was his supplication in illness: “O Allah, You reproached some people and said: ‘Say: Call on those whom you assert besides Him; so they shall not control the removal of distress from you nor (its) transference’ [al-Isra 17:56, M. H. Shakir]. So, O He besides whom no one controls the removal of my distress nor its transference, bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, remove my distress, and transfer it to him who calls upon another god along with You; there is no god other than You.”

99-/_2 - Majma‘ al-Bayān 6:651.

Al-Tabrisi: from Ibn ‘Abbas and al-Hasan, regarding His saying, “Call on those whom you assert besides Him” [al-Isra 17:56], the ones besides Him intended are the angels, the Messiah, and ‘Uzayr.

And if We please We would certainly take away that which We have revealed to you, then you would not find for it a protector against Us. [al-Isra 17:86, M. H. Shakir]

99-/_3 - ad-Durr al-Manthūr 5:334.

Al-Suyuti, in al-Durr al-Manthur, transmits up to Ibn ‘Abbas that he said: The delegation of Yemen came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and they said: “Abayta al-la‘n.” The Messenger of Allah said: “Glory be to Allah! This is only said to a king, and I am not a king; I am Muhammad son of ‘Abd Allah.” They said: “We will not call you by your name.” He said: “Then I am Abu al-Qasim.” They said: “O Abu al-Qasim, we have hidden something for you (to divine).” He said: “Glory be to Allah! This is only done to a soothsayer, and the soothsayer, the fortune-teller, and soothsaying are in the Fire.” One of them said to him: “So who bears witness that you are the Messenger of Allah?” He reached his hand to a handful of pebbles, took them and said: “These bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah.” They glorified Allah in his hand and said: “We bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.” They said to him: “Recite to us some of what has been sent down to you.” So he recited: “By those who set the ranks in order...” until he reached His saying, “Then there followed it a piercing flame” [as-Saffat 37:10, M. H. Shakir]. He was still, not a vein in him throbbing, and his tears were indeed racing to his beard. They said to him: “We see you weeping! Do you weep from fear of the One who sent you?” He said: “Rather I weep from fear of the One who sent me. He has sent me upon a path like the edge of a sword; if I deviate from it, I perish.” Then he recited: “And if We please We would certainly take away that which We have revealed to you, then you would not find for it a protector against Us.” [al-Isra 17:86, M. H. Shakir]

99-/_2 - at-Tawhīd 451.

Ibn Babawayh said: Abu Muhammad Ja‘far b. ‘Ali b. Ahmad al-Faqih (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us; he said: Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Sadaqah al-Qummi informed us; he said: Abu ‘Amr Muhammad b. ‘Umar b. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Ansari al-Kajji narrated to me; he said: One who heard al-Hasan b. Muhammad al-Nawfali told me, saying in a long report: Indeed Sulayman al-Marwazi, the theologian of Khurasan, said to Imam al-Rida (peace be upon him) regarding will (iradah): “He has described Himself as willing (murid).” Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “His description of Himself as willing is not an information that He is will itself, nor an information that ‘will’ is one of His Names.” Sulayman said: “Because His will is His knowledge.” Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “So when He knows a thing, has He then willed it?” Sulayman said: “Yes.” He (peace be upon him) said: “Then if He does not will it, did He not know it?” Sulayman said: “Yes.” He (peace be upon him) said: “From where did you say that, and what is the proof that His will is His knowledge? For He may know what He will never will. And that is His saying, ‘And if We please We would certainly take away that which We have revealed to you’ [al-Isra 17:86, M. H. Shakir]; He knows how He would take it away, yet He will never take it away.”

Except mercy from your Lord; surely His grace to you is abundant. [al-Isra 17:87, M. H. Shakir]

_1 - Majma‘ al-Bayān 6:676.

Al-Tabrisi in Majma‘ al-Bayan: from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying, “Surely His grace to you is abundant” [al-Isra 17:87], he said: He intends that He made you the master of the children of Adam, sealed the prophets with you, and granted you the Praiseworthy Station.
