The Weeping of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) for Imam Husain (a.s.)

The Weeping of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) for Imam Husain (a.s.)

The author says: The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was patient regarding all of these matters, yet he would weep for Imam Husain (a.s.), because weeping is not contrary to patience; rather, it is a consequence of compassion and tenderness of heart.

It has not been reported that whenever the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) mentioned a calamity that would befall himself or any member of his family, he wept over it—except in the case of Imam Husain (a.s.). Whenever he saw him or remembered him, weeping would overcome him.

He would say to Ali (a.s.): “Bring him to me.” Then he would kiss his throat and weep.

They would ask: “Why do you weep?”

He would reply: “I am kissing the places where the swords will strike.” [284]

If he saw Imam Husain (a.s.) happy, he would weep. If he saw him sorrowful, he would weep. If he saw him wearing new clothes, he would weep. [285]

Likewise, Amir al-Mu'minin Ali (a.s.), Fatimah (s.a.), and Hasan (a.s.) all wept.

During his final farewell, Imam Husain (a.s.) instructed his family:

“Be patient. Do not scratch your faces, do not tear your collars, and do not cry out with wailing.” [286]

However, he did not forbid them from weeping.

Indeed, he only forbade his daughter Sukaynah from weeping while he was still alive, as he said:

“Do not burn my heart with your grief-filled tears so long as my soul remains in my body.

But when I am killed, then you will be more entitled to what you do, O best of women!”

Reflect upon the patience of that noble Imam (a.s.), a patience at which even the angels marveled.

At the time when he lay upon the burning ground, every part of his body had been wounded and torn apart by arrows, spears, and swords.

His head had been split open.

His forehead had been broken.

His chest had been pierced by arrows.

His heart had been torn by a three-pronged spear.

One arrow was lodged in his throat.

Another had wounded his jaw.

Another had pierced his side.

His tongue clung to the roof of his mouth from dryness.

His liver was burning from thirst.

His lips had dried from the intensity of thirst.

His heart was anguished for his slain companions and his helpless family.

His hand had been severed by the blow of Zur‘ah ibn Sharik.

A spear had penetrated his side.

His face and head were dyed with blood.

From one side came the cries of distress from his women and children.

From another came the mockery and insults of the enemies.

On yet another side lay the bodies of his slain companions. [288]

Despite all of this, he did not sigh, nor did he shed a single tear.

He continually said:

“Patience upon Your decree! There is no deity besides You, O Helper of those who seek help!”

For this reason it is stated in his ziyārah:

“Indeed, the angels of the heavens were astonished at your patience.”

It is narrated from Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.) that the more severe matters became for him, the more radiant his face grew and the greater became his tranquility, until some of the enemies said to one another:

“Look at Imam Husain (a.s.), how he does not fear death!” [291]

Yes, Imam Husain (a.s.) wept six times in Karbala, and the wisdom behind this may have several aspects:
