English: The prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and the imamate of the Imams (peace be upon them) [1], and that you barter it away for the worldly show; for that—though it may be abundant—leads to depletion, loss, and ruin [2]. Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: And Me alone, so fear Me—regarding concealing the matter of Muhammad and the matter of his legatee. For if you are God-fearing, you will not impugn the prophethood of the Prophet nor the designation of the Legatee; rather, God’s proofs against you stand established, and His evidences thereby are clear—they have cut off your excuses and nullified your deceit [3]. These Jews of Medina denied the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and betrayed him, and said: “We know that Muhammad is a prophet and that ‘Ali is his legatee; but you are not that one, nor is this”—pointing to ‘Ali. So God made their garments upon them, and their sandals upon their feet, speak; each one of them said to its wearer: “You have lied, O enemy of God. Rather, this is the Prophet Muhammad, and this is the legatee ‘Ali. And had God permitted us, we would have pressed you, wounded you [4], and slain you.” The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said: “God, Mighty and Majestic, grants them respite because He knows that from their loins will emerge righteous, believing offspring. Had they been separated [5], He would have punished [6] these with a painful punishment. Only one who fears missing the opportunity hastens.”

99-/443 _2- Tafsir al-‘Ayyashi: From Jabir al-Ju‘fi, who said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the inner interpretation of this verse in the Qur’an: “And believe in what I have revealed, verifying that which is with you, and be not the first to deny it.” He said: “It means so-and-so and his companion, and those who followed them and embraced their religion. God said, addressing them: ‘And be not the first to deny it’—meaning ‘Ali (peace be upon him).”

English: that Muhammad is a prophet and that ‘Ali is a legatee, but that the two of them will come five hundred years after our present time. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) said to them: “Will you accept the Torah between me and you as judge?” They said: “Yes.” They brought it, and began to read from it contrary to what was in it. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, turned the scroll [1] they were [2] reading in [3]—which was in the hands of two of their reciters, one holding the beginning and the other the end—into a serpent with two heads. Each head seized the right hand of the one holding it and began to crush [4] and smash it, and the two men cried out and screamed. There were other scrolls there; they spoke and said: “You two will not cease from punishment until you read what is in them of the description of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and his prophethood, and the description of ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and his imamate, just as God Most High revealed [5].” So they read it correctly, believed in the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), and professed the imamate of ‘Ali, the Friend of God and the legatee of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family). Then God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And do not confound the truth with falsehood”—by acknowledging Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and ‘Ali (peace be upon him) from one angle while denying them from another; and by concealing the truth about the prophethood of this Muhammad and the imamate of this ‘Ali, even though you know you are concealing it and opposing your own knowledge and reason. For if God has made your reports a proof, and then you denied them, He does not neglect His proof; rather, He establishes it from other than your direction. So do not suppose that you can overcome your Lord and overpower Him. God, Mighty and Majestic, said to these: “And keep up the prayer and pay the zakat and bow with those who bow.” He said: Establish the obligatory prayer which Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) brought; and also send blessings upon Muhammad and his pure, goodly family, of whom ‘Ali (peace be upon him) is their master and most excellent. And give the zakat from your wealth when due, and from your persons when it is required, and from your assistance when it is sought. “And bow with those who bow”—humble yourselves with those who humble themselves before the greatness of God, Mighty and Majestic, by yielding to the friends of God: Muhammad, the Prophet of God; ‘Ali, the Friend of God; and the Imams after them, the masters of God’s elect.

It is the zakat which God has obligated upon the believers along with the prayer, upon the wealthy and the poor among them—for they are the bulk of the people—while the people of wealth are the more eminent among the people.” He said: And I asked: “Even upon the poor person who is given charity [1]?” He said: “Yes; he should give out of what is given to him in charity.”
