S 2 A 109

He said: You will go to the hole from which you took me; in it are ten thousand Khusrawani dinars and eight hundred [1] thousand dirhams, so take them.

The Bedouin said: What should I do? Groups among those present here have heard this from the lizard, and I am tired; so let whoever [2] is rested go there and take it.

The lizard said: O brother of the Arabs, Allah has made it for you as compensation for me; He will not allow anyone to reach it before you, and whoever attempts to take it, Allah will destroy him.

The Bedouin was tired and walked a little, but a group of hypocrites who were in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) preceded him to the hole. They put their hands into the hole to take what they had heard of, and a great serpent came out at them, stung them, and killed them; then it stood still until the Bedouin arrived, and it called out to him: O brother of the Arabs, look at these—how Allah commanded me to kill them while sparing your wealth, which is the compensation for your lizard, and He made me its guardian; so take it.

The Bedouin took out the dirhams and dinars, but he could not carry them. The serpent called to him: Take the rope that is around your waist and tie it to the two bags, then tie the rope to my tail, for I will drag it for you to your home; there I will be your servant [3] and the guardian of your wealth [4]. The serpent came and continued to guard him and the wealth until the Bedouin distributed it in estates, properties, and orchards that he bought; then the serpent departed.

Many of the People of the Book wish that they could turn you back into unbelievers after your faith, out of envy from themselves, after the truth has become manifest to them; but pardon and forgive, till Allah accomplishes His purpose; surely Allah has power over all things. (Qur’an 2:109) [M. H. Shakir]

99-/580 _1- Imam al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-‘Askari, Abu al-Qa’im (peace be upon them both), regarding His saying, Most of the People of the Book wish that they could turn you back into unbelievers after your faith: “By what they cast upon you of specious arguments, out of envy within themselves toward you,

Because He honored you with Muhammad and ‘Ali and their pure family, after the truth—the miracles [1] indicating the truthfulness of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and the merit of ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and their family [2]—had become clear to them.

So pardon and overlook their ignorance, and meet them with the proofs of Allah; repel thereby their falsehood until Allah brings His command regarding them—of killing—on the Day of the Conquest of Mecca. Then you will expel them from the city of Mecca and from [3] the Arabian Peninsula, and you will not allow any disbeliever to remain in it.

Surely Allah has power over all things; and by His power over all things, He has ordained what is most suitable for you in His worship of you—by forbearance toward them and meeting them with disputation in the best manner.”

And keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate; and whatever good you send beforehand for yourselves, you will find it with Allah; surely Allah sees what you do. (Qur’an 2:110) [M. H. Shakir]

99-/581 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Keep up the prayer by completing its ablution, its takbirs, its standing, its recitation, its bowing, its prostration, and its limits. And give the zakat to those who deserve it; do not give it to a disbeliever or a hypocrite [4]. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: The one who gives charity to our enemies is like a thief in the Sanctuary of Allah.

And whatever good you send ahead for yourselves—of wealth that you spend in obedience to Allah—if you have no wealth, then from your prestige that you extend to your believing brothers, by which you draw benefits to them and repel harms from them—you will find it with Allah. Allah Most High will benefit you, by the rank of Muhammad and ‘Ali and their pure family, on the Day of Resurrection. He will thereby remit your evil deeds, multiply your good deeds, and raise your degrees.

Surely Allah sees what you do—He is Knowing; nothing of an outward inwardness is hidden from Him, nor an inward outwardness [5]. He recompenses you according to your beliefs and your intentions. He is not like the kings of this world, for whom matters become confused [6] among some of them, so they attribute the deed of some [7] to others.
