Fear Came Upon Him Even in Sleep

در خواب هم خوف از برايش حاصل مي‌شد

و در خواب هم خوف از برايش حاصل مي‌شد، حتي اينكه روزي از خواب بيدار شد و گريست، فرزندش علي عرض كرد از براي چه گريه مي‌كني اي پدر؟ فرمود: در خواب ديدم كه شخصي مي‌گفت: اين جماعت مي‌روند، و اجل ايشان را مي‌كشد، عرض كرد: اي پدر مگر ما بر حق نيستيم؟ فرمود: چرا، بلكه ما برحقيم به حق آن كسي كه بازگشت خلايق به سوي اوست، عرض كرد: پس باكي از مردن نداريم [1247] ، و احرام بست از اميد ياري خلق، اگر چه هر چند گاهي طلب ياري مي‌نمود، به جهت اتمام حجت بود، و احرام بست از اميد زندگاني چنانكه به عمرو بن [لوذان] فرمود در وقتي كه آن حضرت را ترسانيد از مخالفت بني‌اميه، فرمودند: بر من مخفي نيست، و الله مرا نخواهند گذاشت مگر اينكه اين دل خون شده را بيرون آورند [1248] ، پس شروع نمود در مناسك اين حج، و احرام بست از جميع اماكن و بلاد، و سعي نمود به سوي صفاي كربلا، و رحل خود را در آن جا گذاشت از براي وقوف، پس احرام بست از طعام و از آب، و شروع نمود در تمام مناسك آن، كه بيرون رفتن به سوي جهاد بود، با جماعتي كه مأمور بود كه ايشان را با خود ببرد، و ميثاق از ايشان بگيرد، و چون از اعمال اين حج فارغ شد، صداي اذان سوم بلند شد از براي حج سوم، و ميقات آن خيمه‌ها بود، و منادي رسول (صلي الله عليه و آله) خدا و علي (عليه‌السلام) و فاطمه (عليهاالسلام) و حسن (عليه‌السلام) و با ايشان بود ملكي كه در دست داشت شيشه‌ي سبزي از زمرد سبزتر، و وقت آن عصر تاسوعا [ صفحه 403] بود در وقتي كه آن جناب سر به زانو گذاشته بود، اندكي خواب بر او غلبه نمود [1249] ، و اذانش كلام پيغمبر خدا بود، كه فرمود: اي پسر من توئي شهيد آل محمد (صلي الله عليه و آله)، و تمام اهل آسمانها به قدوم تو مستبشرند، زود باش كه بايد فردا شب افطار تو در نزد من باشد، و اينك ملكي است از آسمانها نازل گرديده است، كه خون تو را در اين شيشه‌ي سبز ضبط نمايد، پس آن جناب اظهار خوشحالي نمود، و لبيك گفت و احرام بست به اين حج [1250] .لكن چون خواهرش مطلع گرديد بر اين تلبيه و اذان، و تسليم برادرش از براي موت در شب [عاشورا]، سر خود را برهنه نمود، و پاي برهنه به طرف برادر دويد، و لطمه بر صورت زد، و فرياد زد اي برادر كاش مرده بودم، اين كلام كسي است كه يقين به كشته شدن داشته باشد، فرمود: بلي خواهر چنين است: يعني من تسليم كرده‌ام، و علاجي ندارم، و تماما سباب خلاص منقطع گرديده، عرض كرد اين بيشتر دل را بدرد مي‌آورد، كه ترا بيچاره ببينم، پس دست انداخت، و گريبان خود را چاك نمود، و صيحه زد، و بي‌هوش شد، و بر زمين افتاد، حضرت به بالينش نشست، و آب بر صورتش پاشيد تا به حال آمد، پس او را موعظه كرد، و تسلي داد. [1251] .

Fear Came Upon Him Even in Sleep

And fear would come upon him even in sleep.

It is reported that one day he awoke from sleep and wept.

His son ʿAli (a.s.) said:

“Why are you weeping, O father?”

He replied:

“I saw in a dream a person saying: ‘These people are travelling, and death is driving them onward.’”

ʿAli (a.s.) said:

“O father, are we not upon the truth?”

He replied:

“Yes. Rather, we are upon the truth, by the right of the One to whom the return of all creation is.”

He said:

“Then we have no concern about death.” [1247]

And he entered into ihraam from hoping for the assistance of people.

Although he would occasionally seek help, it was only for the completion of the proof (itmaam al-hujjah).

And he entered into ihraam from hope of continued life, just as he said to ʿAmr ibn [Ludhan] when he warned the Imam (a.s.) against opposing Banu Umayyah.

The Imam (a.s.) said:

“It is not hidden from me. By Allah, they will not leave me until they bring forth this blood-filled heart.” [1248]

Then he began the rites of this Hajj.

He entered into ihraam from all places and lands and proceeded in sa'ee toward the purity (safaa) of Karbala.

He set down his caravan there for the standing (wuqoof).

Then he entered into ihraam from food and from water.

He began all the rites of that Hajj, which consisted of going forth to jihad with the group whom he had been commanded to take with him, and from whom he had been commanded to take a covenant.

When he completed the rites of this Hajj, the call of the third adhaan was raised for the third Hajj.

Its Miqat was the tents.

Its caller was the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), ʿAli (a.s.), Fatimah (a.s.), and al-Hasan (a.s.).

With them was an angel carrying a green bottle, greener than emerald.

Its time was the afternoon of Tasuʿa.

At that moment, the Imam (a.s.) had placed his head upon his knees, and a slight sleep overcame him. [1249]

Its adhaan was the speech of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), who said:

“O my son! You are the martyr of the family of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.).

All the inhabitants of the heavens rejoice at your arrival.

Hasten, for tomorrow night your breaking of the fast shall be with me.

And here is an angel who has descended from the heavens to preserve your blood in this green vessel.”

Then the Imam (a.s.) expressed joy, replied “Labbayk,” and entered into ihraam for this Hajj. [1250]

However, when his sister Zaynab (a.s.) became aware of this talbiyyah, this call, and her brother’s acceptance of death on the night of ʿAshura, she uncovered her head, ran barefoot toward her brother, struck her face, and cried out:

“O brother! Would that I had died before this! This is the speech of one who is certain that he will be killed.”

He replied:

“Yes, my sister, it is so.”

Meaning:

“I have submitted myself, and I have no alternative. All means of deliverance have been cut off.”

She said:

“This rends the heart even more—to see you helpless and without recourse.”

Then she grasped her garment, tore the collar of her dress, cried aloud, fainted, and fell to the ground.

The Imam (a.s.) sat beside her, sprinkled water upon her face until she regained consciousness, then he admonished her and consoled her. [1251]
