99-/— Translation: Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: Do you not see that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “And establish the testimony for Allah.” [Reference: al-Talaq 65:2; Shakir: So when they have reached their prescribed time, then retain them with kindness or part from them with kindness, and call to witness two just men from among you and give upright testimony for Allah. With that is admonished he who believes in Allah and the Last day; and whoever is careful of (his duty to) Allah, He will make for him an outlet.]

99-/1572 (Man la yahduruhu al-faqih 3:115/35) — And from him: He (peace be upon him) said, regarding His, Mighty and Majestic, saying: “And whoever conceals it, then surely his heart is sinful,” he said: “His heart is unbelieving.”

99-/1573 (Tafsir al-‘Ayyashi 1:526/156) — Al-‘Ayyashi: From Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), he said: I asked about “Do not conceal testimony.” He replied: “After (giving) the testimony.”

Qur’an (al-Baqarah 2:284-286) — Shakir:

- 2:284: Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is Allah’s; and whether you manifest what is in your minds or hide it, Allah will call you to account according to it; then He will forgive whom He pleases and chastise whom He pleases, and Allah has power over all things.

- 2:285: The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Thy forgiveness (do we crave), and to Thee is the eventual course.

- 2:286: Allah does not impose upon any soul a duty but to the extent of its ability; for it is (the benefit of) what it has earned, and upon it (the evil of) what it has wrought: Our Lord! do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake; Our Lord! do not lay on us a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord do not impose upon us that which we have not the strength to bear; and pardon us and grant us protection and have mercy on us, Thou art our Patron, so help us against the unbelieving people.

99-/1574 (al-Ihtijaj: 220) — From Musa b. Ja‘far, from his father, from his forefathers, from al-Husayn b. ‘Ali, from his father ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon them), in a long narration with a Jew who questioned him [2] about the merits of the prophets, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) answered with what Allah granted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), which was superior to what the prophets (peace be upon them) had been given. Among what the Jew asked [3] him, he said: “This Sulayman had the winds subjected to him, so they would carry him through his land—its morning course a month and its evening course a month?” ‘Ali (peace be upon him) replied: “It was indeed so; and Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) was given what is superior to this: he was taken by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque—a journey of a month—and he was taken up through the kingdom of the heavens—a journey of fifty thousand years—in less than a third of a night, until he reached the base of the Throne. He drew near in knowledge, and then from Paradise a green rafraf [4] (canopy, carpet) descended, and the light overwhelmed his sight,

99-/1574 — He perceived the Majesty of his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, with his heart, though he did not see it with his eye; and he was like the measure of two bows between it and him or nearer, so He revealed to His servant what He revealed [1]. Among what He revealed to him was the verse in Surat al-Baqarah: “Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is Allah’s; and whether you manifest what is in your minds or hide it, Allah will call you to account according to it; then He will forgive whom He pleases and chastise whom He pleases, and Allah has power over all things.” (Qur’an 2:284, Shakir)

99-/1574 — This verse had been presented to the prophets from Adam (peace be upon him) until Allah, blessed is His Name, sent Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and it was presented to the nations but they refused to accept it due to its weight; and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) accepted it and presented it to his community and they accepted it. When Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saw their acceptance, He knew they could not bear it. So when he (the Prophet) reached the base of the Throne, He repeated the words to him that he might understand, saying: “The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord.” The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) answered on his own behalf and that of his community, saying:

99-/1574 — “And the believers (too); all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers.” He—glorious is His remembrance—said: “For them are Paradise and forgiveness from Me if they do that.” So the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “Since You will do that with us: ‘Our Lord, Thy forgiveness (do we crave), and to Thee is the eventual course’—that is, the return in the Hereafter.” (Qur’an 2:285-286, Shakir translations given above)

99-/1574 — He said: Allah, exalted is His praise, answered him: “I have done that for you and your community. And since you have accepted the verse with its severity and the greatness of what is in it, though I presented it to the nations and they refused it, while your community accepted it, it is incumbent upon Me to lift it from your community.” And He said: “Allah does not impose upon any soul a duty but to the extent of its ability; for it is (the benefit of) what it has earned (of good), and upon it (the evil of) what it has wrought.” (Qur’an 2:286, Shakir)

99-/1574 — The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said, upon hearing this: “Since You have done that for me and my community, grant me more.” He said: “Ask.” He said: “Our Lord, do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake.” He, Mighty and Majestic, said: “I will not take your community to account for forgetfulness and error, due to your station with Me. Previously, when the former nations forgot what they had been reminded of, I opened upon them the gates of punishment, but I have lifted [2] that from your community; and when the former nations erred, they were punished for their error, but I have lifted that from your community due to your honor with Me.” (Qur’an 2:286 phrase; Shakir given above)

99-/1574 — The Prophet said: “O Allah, since You have granted me that, grant me more.” Allah, Most High, said to him: “Ask.” He said: “Our Lord, do not lay on us a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us,” meaning by burden the hardships that were upon those before us. Allah, Blessed is His Name, granted that, saying: “I have lifted from your community the fetters that were upon the former nations...” (Qur’an 2:286, Shakir)

Whom have you left as successor in your community?’ I said: ‘Its best.’ He said: ‘‘Ali b. Abi Talib?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘O Muhammad, I looked upon the earth and chose you; I derived for you a name from My Names—so I am al-Mahmud and you are Muhammad. Then I looked again and chose ‘Ali, deriving for him a name from My Names—so I am al-A‘la and he is ‘Ali. O Muhammad, I created you, and ‘Ali, and Fatimah, and Hasan, and Husayn, and the Imams from his progeny from the root of My Light, and I presented your wilayah to the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth [9]; whoever accepted it was, with Me, among the believers, and whoever rejected it was, with Me, among the disbelievers… Do you wish to see them?’… Then I turned and beheld: ‘Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, Husayn… and the Mahdi, in a shallow pool of light, standing in prayer, and he—in their midst—like a brilliant star.’ He said: ‘O Muhammad, these are the proofs, and he is the avenger from your progeny; by My might and majesty, he is the obligatory Proof for My friends and the one who exacts vengeance from My enemies.’”
