Translation: Ali b. Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “But if they deny you, truly messengers before you were denied; they came with clear proofs, and the Psalms, and the illuminating Book,” he said: “The clear proofs are the signs; the ‘zubur’ are the books of the prophets concerning prophethood; and the ‘illuminating Book’ is [the book of] the lawful and the unlawful.”

[Qur’an 3:185] Translation (M. H. Shakir): Every soul shall taste of death, and you shall only be paid fully your reward on the resurrection day; then whoever is removed far away from the fire and is made to enter the garden he indeed has attained his desire; and the life of this world is nothing but a provision of vanities.

Translation: Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Sulayman al-Daylamī, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When it is the Day of Resurrection, Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) will be called; he will be clothed in a rose-colored robe and stationed at the right of the Throne. Then Ibrahim (peace be upon him) will be called; he will be clothed in a white robe and stationed at the left of the Throne. Then ‘Ali, Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), will be called; he will be clothed in a rose-colored robe and stationed at the right of the Prophet. Then Isma‘il (peace be upon him) will be called; he will be clothed in a white robe and stationed at the left of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Then al-Hasan (peace be upon him) will be called; he will be clothed in a rose-colored robe and stationed at the right of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). Then al-Husayn (peace be upon him) will be called; he will be clothed in a rose-colored robe and stationed at the right of al-Hasan (peace be upon him). Then the Imams will be called; they will be clothed in rose-colored robes, each one stationed to the right of his companion. Then the Shi‘a will be called and they will stand before them. Then Fatimah (peace be upon her) and the women of her progeny and her Shi‘a will be called, and they will enter Paradise without reckoning.

Then a caller will call from beneath the Throne, from the Lord of Might and the Highest Horizon: ‘What an excellent father is your father, O Muhammad’—and he is Ibrahim; ‘and what an excellent brother is your brother’—and he is ‘Ali b. Abi Talib; ‘and what excellent grandsons are your two grandsons’—and they are al-Hasan and al-Husayn; ‘and what an excellent fetus is your fetus’—and he is Muhassin; ‘and what excellent rightly guided Imams are your progeny’—and they are so-and-so until their end; ‘and what excellent followers are your followers.’ Behold, Muhammad and his legatee, his two grandsons, and the Imams from his progeny—they are the triumphant. Then they will be ordered to [enter] Paradise. And that is His saying: ‘Then whoever is removed far away from the Fire and is made to enter the Garden, he indeed has attained his desire’ [Qur’an 3:185, Shakir].”

Translation: Al-‘Ayyashi, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: “When ‘Ali (peace be upon him) closed the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), he said: ‘Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return’ [Qur’an 2:156, Shakir], ‘What a calamity—particular to the near ones yet general to the believers; never were they afflicted with the like of it, nor did they ever witness its like.’ When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was buried, they heard a caller call from the roof of the house: ‘Surely Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you a thorough purifying’ [Qur’an 33:33, Shakir]. ‘And peace be upon you, O People of the Household, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Every soul shall taste of death … [to the end of the verse]’ [Qur’an 3:185, Shakir]. ‘Surely with Allah there is a replacement for every one gone, a solace for every calamity, and a recompense for everything missed. So trust in Allah, rely upon Him, and place your hope in Him; truly the one afflicted is the one deprived of reward.’”

Translation: From al-Husayn, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the Messenger of Allah passed away, Gabriel came to them while the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) was shrouded, and in the house were ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn (peace be upon them). He said: ‘Peace be upon you, O Household of Mercy. Every soul shall taste of death … to [the words] “the provision of vanities”’ [Qur’an 3:185, Shakir]. ‘Surely with Allah there is solace for every calamity, a recompense for everything missed, and a replacement for every perished one; so trust in Allah and place your hope in Him. Truly the afflicted is the one deprived of reward. And this is my last stepping in the world.’ He said: They said, ‘We heard a voice but saw no form.’”

Translation: From Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) passed, they heard a voice from the side of the house, and they saw no form, saying: ‘Every soul shall taste of death … up to “he indeed has attained his desire”’ [Qur’an 3:185, Shakir]. Then he said: ‘With Allah there is a replacement and a solace for every calamity, and a recompense for what is missed; so trust in Allah and place your hope in Him. The truly deprived is he who is deprived of reward. And cover the private condition of your Prophet.’ When he was placed upon the bier, it was called out: ‘O ‘Ali, do not remove the shirt.’ He said: So ‘Ali (peace be upon them) washed him in his shirt.”

Translation: From Muhammad b. Yunus, from some of our companions, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “‘Every soul shall taste of death—and will be raised’—thus it was sent down to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family): that there is none from this community but that he will surely be raised. As for the believers, they will be raised to the coolness of the eye; and as for the wicked, they will be raised to Allah’s disgrace of them.”

Translation: From Zurara, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “‘Every soul shall taste of death’—he who is killed has not [yet] tasted death.” And he said: “He must return until he tastes death.”

Translation: Sa‘d b. ‘Abdillah said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi al-Khattab narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Sinan, from ‘Ammar b. Marwan, from al-Munakhkhal b. Jamil, from Jabir b. Yazid, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “There is no believer but that he has [both] a killing and a death. Whoever is killed will be raised until he dies; and whoever dies will be raised until he is killed.” Then I recited to Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) this verse, “Every soul shall taste of death,” and he said: “And [will be] raised.” I said: “Your saying ‘and [will be] raised’—what is it?” He said: “Thus Gabriel sent it down to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family): ‘Every soul shall taste of death—and will be raised.’” Then he said: “There is no one in this community, righteous or wicked, but that he will be raised. As for the believers, they will be raised to the coolness of their eyes; and as for the wicked, they will be raised to Allah’s disgrace of them. Have you not heard that Allah, exalted is He, says: ‘And most certainly We will make them taste of the nearer punishment before the greater punishment’ [Qur’an 32:21, Shakir]; and His saying: ‘O you who are clothed! Arise and warn’ [Qur’an 74:1-2, Shakir]—meaning thereby Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) and his rising in the Raj‘a, in which he will warn; and His saying: ‘Surely it is one of the greatest (signs), a warner to mortals’ [Qur’an 74:35-36, Shakir]—meaning Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), a warner to mortals in the Raj‘a; and His saying: ‘He it is Who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He might cause it to prevail over all religions, though the polytheists may be averse’ [Qur’an 9:33, Shakir]—Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will make it prevail in the Raj‘a; and His saying: ‘Until when We open upon them a door of severe chastisement’ [Qur’an 23:77, Shakir]—that is ‘Ali b. Abi Talib when he returns in the Raj‘a.” Jabir said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), concerning His saying, ‘Often will those who disbelieved wish that they had been Muslims’ [Qur’an 15:2, Shakir], said: ‘That is me—when I and my Shi‘a go forth, and ‘Uthman and his Shi‘a go forth, and we kill the Banu Umayya; then, at that point, those who disbelieved will wish that they had been Muslims.’” I say: Narrations have already preceded concerning the verse in His saying, “What! if he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels?” [Qur’an 3:144, Shakir].

[Qur’an 3:186] Translation (M. H. Shakir): You shall certainly be tried respecting your wealth and your souls, and you shall certainly hear from those who have been given the Book before you and from those who associate (others with Allah) much annoying talk; and if you are patient and guard (against evil), surely this is one of the affairs (which should be determined) with courage.
