18. Healing from Cancer through the Grace of Imam Husain (a.s.)

(1) Around 25 years ago, my son-in-law’s mother was diagnosed with leukemia. Her own sister had previously contracted it and passed away within seven years.

Seeing the symptoms, she herself suspected it was cancer, and asked the doctor, “Isn’t this disease lupus?”

The doctor, thinking that the patient was herself a medical professional and knew the illness, replied, “Yes.”

Lupus is a type of blood cancer that eventually ends in death. In its final moments, all the capillaries of the body rupture, a large amount of blood is expelled through the throat, and the patient dies within less than five minutes.

After realizing what her disease was, in less than a year she reached the final stage: all the hair on her head fell out, and no one was even willing to come visit her anymore.

She was hospitalized in Tehran, growing closer to death day by day.

On the last day of Sha‘ban, her son was leaving for a preaching mission. He called a cab, packed his travel bags, and set out for Tehran to see his mother before going on to Karaj.

At the moment of leaving, he remembered that at home they had some turbat (sacred earth) of Sayyid al-Shuhada (Imam Husain, a.s.). He wrapped some of it in paper, gave it to his mother, and said:

“Mother must be in a state of wudu (ritual purity); you too should be in wudu. Turn your mother’s bed toward the qibla, and call upon Sayyid al-Shuhada (a.s.). When those present in the hospital room are weeping and praying, open this paper, start reciting Surah al-Qadr, dissolve the turbat in a cup of water, give it to her to drink, and continue reciting Surah al-Qadr throughout.”

When he arrived at the hospital, his mother had reached the final stage; there was a basin placed before her, and blood was pouring from her throat into it.

Remembering his aunt’s experience, he realized there was probably less than five minutes of her life left. In haste, he tore open the paper, poured the turbat into her throat.

At that very moment the bleeding stopped, the patient’s condition rapidly improved, and a few days later she was discharged from the hospital. Her lost hair grew back, and she regained her health.

Now, 25 years have passed since that incident, and she personally manages her household affairs and shows no trace of that illness at all.

For the narrator and his family, this was a clear and tangible sign of Imam Husain’s (a.s.) grace, and compared to hundreds of other stories we may have heard, it had a far greater impact in strengthening our belief in the lofty station of the Master of Martyrs.

The turbat of Imam Husain (a.s.) is truly a most wondrous elixir.

(2) On Tuesday, 4/4/81 (equal to 13 Rabi‘ al-Thani 1423 AH) in the holy city of Mashhad, in the presence of the late Ayatollah Misbah, Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Aqa Sayyid Hadi — brother of Ayatollah Sistani — he related the following:

“On my previous trip, Aqa Mehdi Muntakhab (his nephew) had invited me to visit a garden he had newly purchased. I took with me a box containing mohr (prayer clay), a tasbih (rosary), turbat, and water from the Euphrates as a gift for him. I handed the box to an old man who was his gardener and said, ‘This box is for Aqa Muntakhab.’ Then I went upstairs where a group had gathered.”

Among them was a cancer patient whose hair had completely fallen out, though he himself did not know he had cancer.

He told me, *“Haj Aqa, I have a virus that has brought me to this state. I have turned many times to Imam Ridha (a.s.) but received no result. Even in a dream when I went to him, he turned away from me. I recounted my dream to others, and they said: ‘Your situation is not proper.’ So I tried to reform myself with regard to prayer, fasting, and other acts of worship, and improved somewhat.

Then I looked for someone with spiritual influence and thought, ‘Aqa Mehdi is the nephew of Aqa Sayyid Mahmoud; maybe he has something from his uncle,’ so I came here.

Last night, in a dream, I was in the presence of Imam Ridha (a.s.). There was an old man there holding a box. The Imam said to him, ‘Khidr! Give him some healing from that earth so he may cleanse himself.’”*

Sayyid Hadi continued:

“I told him, ‘That box is here right now.’ Aqa Mehdi went and brought some of the turbat and Euphrates water from it and gave it to the patient.”

The patient said, “I must see the box.” His son went, took the box from his aunt, and brought it. When the patient saw it, he said, “Yes, this was the same box.”

Some time later, that man saw my son and said: “Do you recognize me?”

He replied, “No.”

He said, “I am that same sick man; tell your father I am completely cured.”

Years later I went to Iran, and inquired about him. They said: “He died of cancer.”

I said: “How is that possible?”

They replied:

*“He had a very good financial situation, but was constantly obsessed with increasing his wealth. Many times he visited the shrine and asked the Imam for more wealth, but got no answer.

One day in the shrine he said to the Imam: ‘Now that you do not heed me, I will ask nothing more from you — and if even that healing was from you, I do not want that either!’

That night, in a dream, he went to the shrine, but whichever door he tried to enter was shut in his face.

That same night he started bleeding again, his disease returned, he was taken to Tehran, and they brought his body back.”

(3) During the tenure of the late Ayatollah Haj Sheikh Muhammad Hasan Mamqani (1238–1323 AH), a landslip occurred near the shrine of Husain (a.s.). As was customary, the scholar of the age had to supervise the repairs of the sacred grave. Ayatollah Mamqani, together with the late Ayatollah Darbandi, undertook to restore the sacred grave. During the restoration, some of the earth (turbat) over the holy grave was given to them.

A portion of this turbat reached the late Ayatollah Haj Sayyid Muhammad Hadi Milani.

The late Ayatollah Haj Sayyid Muhammad Ali Ruzati (1919–2013 AD) related on Friday 14/11/84 (corresponding to 4 Muharram 1427 AH):

*“During the leadership of the late Ayatollah Milani (1313–1395 AH), I had traveled to holy Mashhad. Due to a friendship I had with the late Sayyid Muhammad Ali Milani (passed away 7 Safar 1432 AH), I was his guest.

While there, I developed a high fever. I asked that great marja‘: ‘Is this genuine turbat?’

He replied, ‘Yes, there is a portion of it here.’

He placed a small amount of that turbat on my tongue, and at that very moment I felt completely well. I performed a ritual bath and went straight to the sacred shrine.”*
