Quran 3:101 (Shakir): And how can you disbelieve while it is you to whom the communications of Allah are recited, and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds fast to Allah, he indeed is guided to the right path.

Quran 3:102 (Shakir): O you who believe! fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die unless you are Muslims.

99-/1855: Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid told us, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Saffar narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from his father, from al-Nadr, from Abu al-Husayn, from Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Fear Allah as He should be feared. He said: “He is to be obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not denied.”

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi, from him his father, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Abu al-Husayn, from Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), the same as it.[2]

Al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from Abu al-Husayn[3], from Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), the same as it.[4]

99-/1856: Ibn Shahrāshūb: from (Tafsīr Wakī‘), he said: Sufyan ibn Murrah al-Hamdani narrated to us, from ‘Abd Khayr, who said: I asked ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) about His saying, Exalted is He: O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared. He said: “By Allah, none acted upon it except the People of the House of the Messenger of Allah. We remembered Allah so we do not forget Him; we thanked Him so we never disbelieve in Him; we obeyed Him so we did not disobey Him. When this verse was revealed, the Companions said: ‘We cannot bear that.’ So Allah, Exalted, revealed: So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can. Waki‘ said: ‘As much as you are able.’ Then he said: And hear what you are commanded to and obey, meaning: obey Allah, His Messenger, and his Household in what they command you.”

99-/1857: Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Husayn ibn Khalid, who said: Abu al-Hasan the First (peace be upon him) said: “How do you recite this verse, O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die unless you are Muslims—how?” I said: ‘Muslimūn (Muslims).’ He said: “Glory be to Allah! He confers faith upon them and calls them believers, then He asks them for Islam, while faith is above Islam!” I said: Thus it is recited in the recitation of Zayd. He said: “Rather, it is in the recitation of ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and it is the revelation with which Gabriel descended upon Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him and his family): ‘except while you are submitters (musallimūn) to the Messenger of Allah, then to the Imam after him.’”

99-/1858: From Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah: Fear Allah as He should be feared. He said: “He is to be obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, and thanked and not denied.”

99-/1859: From Abu Basir, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah: Fear Allah as He should be feared. He said: “It is abrogated.” I said: And what abrogated it? He said: “The saying of Allah: So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can.[1]”

99-/1860: Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi, regarding the verse: There is a difference about it on two opinions: one is that it is abrogated by His saying, Exalted is He: So be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can.[2] He said: And this is narrated from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them). The other is that it is not abrogated, as reported from Ibn ‘Abbas and Tāwūs.

Quran 3:103 (Shakir): And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited, and remember Allah’s favor on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it; thus does Allah make clear to you His communications that you may follow the right way.

99-/1861: ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, regarding His saying, Exalted is He: And hold fast by the cord of Allah all together, said: “It is tawḥīd and wilayah.”
