Ibrahim Ayah 7

99- This means: “By the bounties of Allah,” that is, His blessings.

99-/5676 Ali ibn Ibrahim said: The days of Allah are three: the day of al-Qā’im (may Allah’s blessings be upon him), the day of death, and the Day of Resurrection.

99-/5677 Al-Tabrisi: It is narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “Remind them of Allah’s blessings, Glorified is He, throughout all His days.”

[Qur’an 14:7] And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more; and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5678 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from several of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Yahya ibn al-Mubarak, from ‘Abdullah ibn Jabalāh, from Mu‘awiyah ibn Wahb, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: “Whoever is granted gratitude is granted increase.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more.”

99-/5679 And from him, from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from some of our companions, from Muhammad ibn Hisham, from Muyassir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Gratitude for a blessing is to avoid the forbidden; and the completion of gratitude is a person’s saying: ‘All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.’”

99-/5680 And from him, from Abu ‘Ali al-Ash‘ari, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar, from Safwan, from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar, from two of our companions who heard it, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “No servant has Allah blessed with a blessing, and he recognizes it in his heart and praises Allah openly with his tongue, and his speech concludes with praise, until he is commanded to receive increase.”

99-/5681 And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Ali ibn ‘Uyaynah, from ‘Umar ibn Yazid, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Gratitude for every blessing—even if it is great—is that you praise Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for it.”

99-/5682 And from him, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Mu‘ammar ibn Khallad, who said: I heard Abu—

99- [Continuation of 5682] al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever praises Allah for the blessing has indeed been grateful to Him; and the praise is better than that blessing.”

99-/5683 And from him, by his chain, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from Safwan al-Jammāl, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said to me: “No blessing, small or great, has Allah bestowed upon a servant, and he says: ‘All praise is due to Allah,’ except that he has rendered its thanks.”

99-/5684 And from him, from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad, from al-Mu‘allā ibn Muhammad, from al-Washshā’, from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) came out of the mosque and his mount had been lost. He said: “If Allah returns it to me, I will surely thank Allah with true gratitude.” He said: Not long after, it was brought to him, and he said: “All praise is due to Allah.” Someone said to him: “May I be your ransom! Did you not say: I will surely thank Allah with true gratitude?” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) replied: “Did you not hear me say: ‘All praise is due to Allah’?”

99-/5685 And from him, from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Isma‘il ibn Mihran, from Sayf ibn ‘Umayrah, from Abu Basir, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “Does gratitude have a defined limit such that when the servant performs it he is considered grateful?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “What is it?” He said: “He praises Allah for every blessing upon him—regarding his family and wealth—and if among what Allah has blessed him with in his wealth there is a due, he pays it. And among it is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Glory be to Him Who made this subservient to us and we were not able to do it’ [1]. And among it is His saying, Exalted is He: ‘O my Lord! cause me to disembark a blessed disembarkation and Thou art the best of those who cause to disembark’ [2]. And His saying: ‘O my Lord! make my entry a good entry and make my exit a good exit and grant me from Thee an authority to assist (me)’ [3].”

99-/5686 And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Bakr ibn Salih, from al-Qasim ibn Burayd, from Abu ‘Amr al-Zubayri, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him: “Inform me about the forms of disbelief in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” He said: “Disbelief in the Book of Allah is upon five forms,” and he mentioned the hadith—which we have cited in full under His saying, Exalted is He: “It is the same to them whether you warn them or warn them not; they do not believe,” from Surat al-Baqarah [4]. And he said in the hadith: “The third form of disbelief is ingratitude for blessings, and that is Allah’s saying, relating the words of Sulayman (peace be upon him): ‘This is by the grace of my Lord, to try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful; and whoever is grateful, he is only grateful for his own soul; and whoever is ungrateful, then surely my Lord is Self-sufficient, Bountiful’ [5].” And He said: “If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more; and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.” And He said: “Therefore remember Me, I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me” [1].

99-/5687 The Shaykh, in his Amali, said: The shaykh Abu ‘Abdillah al-Husayn ibn ‘Ubaydillah al-Ghada’iri (may Allah have mercy on him), from Abu Muhammad Harun ibn Musa al-Talla‘kubari, said: Muhammad ibn Hammam told us, who said: ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Hamdani told us, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi told us, from Abu Qatadah al-Qummi, from Dawud ibn Sirhan, who said: We were with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when Sadir the money-changer entered, greeted, and sat. He said to him: “O Sadir, no man’s wealth has ever increased except that Allah’s proof against him thereby becomes greater. If you are able to repel it from yourselves, then do so.” He said to him: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, by what?” He said: “By fulfilling the needs of your brothers from your wealth.” Then he said: “Receive blessings—O Sadir—by treating them well as neighbors; thank the One Who has bestowed upon you; and bestow upon the one who thanks you. For if you are thus, you will deserve from Allah, Exalted, increase, and from your brothers, sincere counsel.” Then he recited: “If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more.”

99-/5688 And from him, he said: A group informed us, from Abu al-Mufaddal, who said: Muhammad ibn Ja‘far ibn Hisham ibn Bilās [2], the mu‘addil al-Baghdadi al-Numayri in Damascus, told us; he said: Muhammad ibn Isma‘il ibn ‘Ulayyah told us; he said: Wahb ibn Jarir told us, from his father, from al-Fudayl ibn Yasār, from Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon them both), who said: “Whoever has been granted supplication will not be deprived of an answer; and whoever has been granted gratitude will not be denied increase.” And Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) recited: “And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more.”

99-/5689 And from him, he said: A group informed us, from Abu al-Mufaddal, who said: Hayyan ibn Bishr, Abu Bishr [3] al-Asadi, the judge in al-Miṣṣīṣah [4], told us; he said: My maternal uncle Abu ‘Ikrimah ‘Amir ibn ‘Imran al-Dabbi al-Kufi told me; he said: Muhammad ibn al-Mufaddal ibn Salamah al-Dabbi told me, from his father al-Mufaddal ibn Salamah, from Malik ibn A‘yan al-Juhani, who said: ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) advised one of his children, and said: “O my son, thank Allah for what He has bestowed upon you, and bestow upon the one who thanks you. For a blessing does not vanish if it is thanked for, and it does not remain if it is denied; and the one who is grateful—by his gratitude—is happier than he is by the blessing for which gratitude is due.” Then he recited—meaning ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him)—Allah’s saying, Exalted is He: “And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more,” to the end of the verse.

99-/5690 Al-‘Ayyashi: From Abu ‘Amr al-Mada’ini, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Any servant upon whom Allah bestows a blessing, and he recognizes it in his heart—(and in another narration: he acknowledges it in his heart)—and praises Allah for it with his tongue, his speech will not conclude before Allah commands increase for him—(and in the narration of Abu Ishaq al-Mada’ini: before Allah permits increase for him)—and this is His saying: ‘If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more.’”

99-/5691 And from Abu Walad, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “What about this manifest blessing upon us from Allah? Is it not that if we thank Him for it and praise Him, He will increase us, as Allah said in His Book: ‘If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more’?” He said: “Yes. Whoever praises Allah for His blessings and thanks Him, and knows that it is from Him and not from other than Him, Allah increases his blessings.”

[Qur’an 14:9] Has not the account reached you of those before you, of the people of Nuh and ‘Ad and Samood, and those after them? None knows them but Allah. Their messengers came to them with clear arguments, but they put their hands into their mouths and said: Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt as to that to which you invite us. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5692 ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “Has not the account reached you of those before you, of the people of Nuh … to His saying: ‘they put their hands into their mouths,’” meaning: into the mouths of the prophets. “They said: ‘Surely we deny that with which you are sent, and most surely we are in serious doubt as to that to which you invite us.’”

[Qur’an 14:12] and on Allah should the reliant rely. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5693 Al-‘Ayyashi: al-Hasan ibn Zarif, from Muhammad, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “and on Allah should the reliant rely,” said: “The farmers.”

99-/5694 Ibn Bābawayh in (al-Faqih), mursal, from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “and on Allah should the reliant rely,” said: “The farmers.”
