6. The Guidance of a Young Man by the Name of Imām Husain (a.s.)

On Sunday night, 10/5/89 (equivalent to 20 Shaʿbān 1431 AH), which was the final night of the Mahdawiyyah commemorations and a night of honoring the author of Miqyāl, one of the respected preachers in Qāʾimiyyah Isfahan said from the pulpit:

“Two months ago, I became acquainted with a young man named Riḍā, who told me his story. He said: I was a wicked youth, beating my parents to the brink of death, doing every sin except prayer and fasting. On the night of ʿĀshūrā, while my parents went to the Husainiyya, I was pursuing my filthy deeds. On my way I picked up a girl who wanted to go to the Husainiyya, and forced her to a place to assault her. She wept and pleaded, saying: Tonight is ʿĀshūrā, but I paid no attention. She said: I am an ʿAlawiyyah (descendant of ʿAlī); for the sake of my mother Lady Fāṭimah, let me go. I did not heed her. She said: Make a deal tonight with Imām Husain; let him place his hand of mercy on your head. The name of Imām Husain affected the depths of my heart. I gave her a ride and dropped her at the Husainiyya door.

I came home, turned on the TV, they were recounting the story of ʿĀshūrā, and on the screen they showed a passion play where they struck children with chains. Uncontrollably, my tears flowed. I sat and cried for a while. My mother came home and asked: Riḍā, what happened? I said: Nothing. She said: No, the whole room smells of Imām Husain. The next day I involuntarily went to the Husainiyya. Everyone there knew me, they knew I was never a religious type, just a troublemaker. The head of the congregation said: Riḍā, have you become Husainī too? Give me your passport, I’ll take you to Karbalā. I said: I don’t have money. He replied: I will take you at my own expense.

Within a few days we went to Karbalā. Everyone went to the shrine; I was embarrassed to go in, but eventually I did. A few months later they even took me to Mecca. When I returned from Mecca, my mother told me: Riḍā, we have chosen a girl for you. They went for the proposal; the next day I went, the girl brought me tea. As soon as she saw me, she cried out: Yā Zahrā! — and fainted. When she came to, she said: Last night I saw Lady Zahrā (peace be upon her) in a dream, she showed me the picture of this young man and said: Tomorrow I will send a suitor for you, do not reject him.

A wicked youth, upon hearing the name of Imām Husain (a.s.), is transformed; becomes Husainī, becomes a pilgrim of Karbalā, goes to Ḥajj, receives the favor of Lady Zahrā (peace be upon her), attains his wish lawfully, and his life becomes organized.”
