The Mourning Gathering on the Night of ʿĀshūrāʾ and the Sermon Delivered by the Imam (a.s.)

مجلس عزاداري در شب عاشورا و خطبه خواندن آن حضرت

بيست و هفتم: مجلس او بود شب عاشورا كه اصحاب را در خيمه جمع كرد، و خطبه‌اي خواند، و در آن خطبه بيان نمود شهادت خود و ايشان را، و دوباره از ايشان بيعت گرفت بر كشته شدن، بلكه بعضي از ايشان بيعت نمودند بر هزار مرتبه كشته شدن، [ صفحه 245] و سوختن و خاكستر به باد دادن. [672] .بيست و هشتم: مجلس او بود در ميان خيمه‌گاه و قتلگاه، در وقتي كه دخترش سكينه، به نزد او آمد و وداع نمود، پس فرمود: اي سكينه گريه‌ي تو به طول خواهد انجاميد بعد از كشته شدن من، حال دل مرا مسوزان بگريه‌ي خود، مادامي كه زنده‌ام در دنيا، و روح در بدن من است. [673] .بيست و نهم: مجلس مرثيه‌ي او بود در قتلگاه، گاهي به جهت بعضي از اصحاب، و گاهي به جهت برادرش عباس، و گاهي به جهت پسرش علي‌اكبر، و گاهي به جهت برادر زاده‌اش قاسم، و گاهي به جهت همه‌ي ايشان، گاهي نشسته، و گاهي ايستاده، چنانكه تفصيل آن بيايد (انشاءالله).

The Mourning Gathering on the Night of ʿĀshūrāʾ and the Sermon Delivered by the Imam (a.s.)

The twenty-seventh gathering was on the night of ʿĀshūrāʾ.

Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) gathered his companions in a tent and delivered a sermon. In that sermon he informed them of his own martyrdom and theirs.

He then renewed their pledge of allegiance regarding the sacrifice that awaited them.

Some of them even pledged that they would remain loyal even if they were killed a thousand times, burned, reduced to ashes, and their ashes scattered by the wind. [672]

The twenty-eighth gathering took place between the camp and the battlefield.

This was when his daughter Sukaynah came to him and bade him farewell.

He said:

“O Sukaynah, your weeping will be prolonged after I am killed.

So do not burn my heart with your tears while I am still alive in this world and while my soul remains in my body.” [673]

The twenty-ninth gathering was his own recitation of elegies on the battlefield.

At times he mourned some of his companions.

At times he mourned his brother al-ʿAbbās.

At times he mourned his son ʿAlī al-Akbar.

At times he mourned his nephew Qāsim.

And at times he mourned all of them together.

Sometimes he did so while seated, and at other times while standing, as will be explained later, if Allah wills.
