76. Observing the Sanctity of the ʿĀshūrā of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.)
1. In Turkey, there are approximately 25 million Alawī Shīʿas, who are extremely devoted to the Ahl al-Bayt (ʿalayhim as-salām), though they face challenges in matters of prayer and fasting.
During the ten days of ʿĀshūrā, the Alawīs fast for 12 days, in honor of the thirst of Imām Ḥusain (ʿa)—and even during the nights, they refrain from drinking water (though they may consume other liquids).
[Baṣīrī, Karāmāt wa Ḥikāyāt-i Pandāmūz, p. 47]
2. Many Alawīs abstain from sexual relations for the entire two months of Muḥarram and Ṣafar, including even young men and newlyweds, as a way of preserving the sanctity of this period.
3. Alawī youth generally do not play football, because they have heard in the Maqātil (accounts of Karbalāʾ) that the blessed head of Imām Ḥusain (ʿa) was (God forbid) kicked with the foot.
4. In our neighborhood in Tabrīz, there was a barber named Mashhadī Ghulām Ḥusain.
From the 7th to the 12th of Muḥarram, he would refuse to shave beards, posting a sign on his shop window:
“During these days, I am excused from shaving beards.”
Some people would mock him as a ‘five-day Muslim’, but I would reply:
“Others sin 365 days a year, but he sins only 5 days less.”
At one point, he traveled to Mashhad, and at the shrine of Imām Riḍā (ʿa) he repented. After returning, he placed a new sign in his shop:
“In this barbershop, we are now permanently excused from shaving beards.”
Two months later, he passed away.
Observing the sanctity of Imām Ḥusain (ʿa) led him to repentance and to leave this world without returning to sin.
5. On Thursday, 27 Dhū al-Qaʿdah 1434 AH (corresponding to 11/7/1392 Shamsī), Ḥujjat al-Islām wal-Muslimīn Āqā-yi Ḥājj Sayyid Kāẓim Shāhrūdī narrated the following:
In ʿAlīābād-i Katūl, there lived a devout man named Ḥājj Raḥīm Muntaẓarī, who was the legal representative (wakīl) of our ancestor, the late Āyatullāh Sayyid Maḥmūd Shāhrūdī (qaddasa sirrah).
My brother Sayyid Muṣṭafā and I went to visit him. He said:
“In my youth, I had traveled before Muḥarram. When I returned, it was the night of the 7th of Muḥarram.
Following the desires of youth, I intended to be intimate with my wife, but then I remembered that this is the night of the Moon of Banū Hāshim (Qamar Banī Hāshim)—i.e., Abul Faḍl al-ʿAbbās (ʿa).
Out of respect, I left the room and went to rest in another one.
In my dream, I saw a majestic personality arrive, accompanied by a servant holding a notebook.
The noble figure instructed the servant:
“Write down his name as well.”
When I awoke, I felt an extraordinary spiritual joy within me.
Now, even though I have reached the age of eighty, I still feel that same youthful vitality inside me, stemming from that blessed moment of reverence.
