Al-Isra Ayah 9-11

Translation: Your enemy. Then He addressed the Banu Umayyah, saying: And if you return, We will return—that is, if you return with the Sufyani, We will return with the Qa’im from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them). And We have made hell a prison for the unbelievers: meaning a confinement in which they are enclosed.

99-/6267: And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim—from his father—from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr—from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid—from Musa ibn Ukayl al-Numayri—from al-‘Ala’ ibn Sayabah—from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright.

99-/6268: Ibn Babawayh said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, the reciter, narrated to us. He said: Abu ‘Amr Muhammad ibn Ja‘far, the reciter, al-Jurjani [1], narrated to us. He said: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan, al-Mawsili in Baghdad [2], narrated to us. He said: Muhammad ibn ‘Asim al-Tarifi [3] narrated to us. He said: ‘Abbas ibn Yazid ibn al-Hasan, the oculist, the mawla of Zayd ibn ‘Ali [4], narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me. He said: Musa ibn Ja‘far narrated to me, from his father Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, from his father Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, from his father ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them), who said: “The Imam from among us is none but infallible (ma‘sûm), and infallibility is not in the outward form of creation such that it may be recognized thereby; therefore he must be designated by explicit text (mansûs).” It was said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, then what is the meaning of “infallible”? He said: “He is the one who holds fast to the rope of Allah, and the rope of Allah is the Quran—they will not separate until the Day of Resurrection. Thus the Imam guides to the Quran, and the Quran guides to the Imam. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright.”

He said: “It guides to the Imam.”

99-/6270: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Ishaq, “Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright.” He said: “It guides to the Imam.”

99-/6271: From al-Fudayl ibn Yasar, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), “Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright.” He said: “It guides to the wilayah (Divinely mandated authority).”

Quran 17:9-11 (M. H. Shakir): Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright and gives good news to the believers who do good that they shall have a great reward. And that (as for) those who do not believe in the hereafter, We have prepared for them a painful chastisement. And man prays for evil as he ought to pray for good, and man is ever hasty.

99-/6272: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying: And He gives good news to the believers who do good that they shall have a great reward—he said: it means the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them). Then He turned to the Banu Umayyah and said: And that those who do not believe in the hereafter, We have prepared for them a painful chastisement. Then he said regarding His saying: And man prays for evil as he ought to pray for good, and man is ever hasty—he (i.e., man) invokes evil upon his enemies just as he invokes good for himself, and he hastens Allah for punishment; and that is His saying: And man is ever hasty.

99-/6273: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Salman al-Farisi, who said: When Allah created Adam, the first thing He created was his eyes, so he began to look at his body as it was being created. When the creation reached his legs and it was time, he wanted to stand but could not—and that is the saying of Allah: And man is ever hasty. And when Allah created Adam and breathed into him, he did not wait but reached for a cluster of grapes and ate it.

99-/6274: From Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When Allah created Adam and breathed into him of His spirit, he sprang up to stand before his creation was complete and he fell. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And man is ever hasty.”

Quran 17:12 (M. H. Shakir): And We have made the night and the day two signs, then We have made the sign of the night to pass away and We have made the sign of the day manifest, so that you may seek grace from your Lord and that you might know the number of the years and the reckoning; and We have explained every thing with distinctness.

He said: Yazid ibn Salam [3] narrated to me that he asked the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): “Why is the Furqan called Furqan?” He said: “Because its verses and chapters are separated; it was sent down not on tablets [whereas other scriptures—the scrolls, the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms—were all sent down at once on tablets] and paper.” He said: “Why is it that the sun and the moon are not equal in light and radiance?” He said: “When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created them, they obeyed and did not disobey in anything. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Jibril (peace be upon him) to erase [the light of] the moon, and he erased it, and the erasure left black lines in the moon. And if the moon had been left as it was, like the sun, and had not been erased, the night would not be distinguished from the day, nor the day from the night; the fasting person would not know how long to fast; and people would not know the number of years and the reckoning. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And We have made the night and the day two signs; then We have made the sign of the night to pass away, and We have made the sign of the day manifest, so that you may seek grace from your Lord and that you might know the number of the years and the reckoning.” He said: “You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad. Inform me: why is the night called layl?” He said: “Because it brings men and women together (yulāyilu) [4], and He has made it …” [text continues].
