S 2 A 45-46

They said: We bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and that you, O Muhammad, are His servant, His Messenger, His elect and His intimate friend; and that ‘Ali is your brother and your vizier, the guardian over your religion, your deputy, the one who defends in your stead; and he is to you as Aaron was to Moses, except that there is no prophet after you. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Then you are the successful.

99-/453 _2- al-‘Ayyāshī: from Ya‘qūb b. Shu‘ayb, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: I asked about His saying: Do you enjoin men to be good and neglect your own souls? He put his hand on his throat and said: Like one slaughtering himself. [1]

99-/454 _3- And al-Hajjāl—from Abū Isḥāq, from one he mentioned—said regarding “and neglect your own souls”: that is, you abandon [yourselves].

99-/455 _4- And ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said about the verse: It was revealed concerning the storytellers and preachers. And it is the saying of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): “Upon every one of their pulpits there is a thundering orator who lies against Allah, His Messenger, and His Book.” And al-Kumayt said about that: - One who hits the mark upon the wooden beams on the day he ascends them for what he says upon them, but errs when he descends. And another said in this meaning: - And one who is not Godwary enjoins people to Godwariness— a physician treating people while he himself is ill.

Qur’an 2:45-46 (M. H. Shakir):

And seek assistance through patience and prayer, and most surely it is a hard thing except for the humble ones, Who know that they shall meet their Lord and that they shall return to Him.

99-/456 _1- Imam al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to the rest of the Jews, unbelievers, and polytheists: And seek help through patience and prayer—with patience in refraining from the unlawful, patience in fulfilling trusts, patience in giving up false leaderships, and in acknowledging Muhammad for his prophethood and ‘Ali for his designation. And seek help through patience in serving them both, and serving whomever they command you to serve, in order to merit acceptance, forgiveness, the abiding bliss of the gardens near the All-Merciful; to accompany the best of the believers; to delight in gazing upon the progeny of Muhammad, the master of the first and the last, and upon ‘Ali, the master of the legatees and the noble chosen lords. For that is more soothing to your eyes, more complete for your joy, and more perfect for your guidance than other bliss of the gardens. And also seek help through the five prayers and by invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family, the lords of the righteous, for a nearness of arrival to the gardens of bliss. And indeed it—that is, this act of the five prayers and invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family, together with yielding to their commands, believing in their secret and their overt, and refraining from opposing them with ‘why’ and ‘how’—is a great burden, except upon the humble, who fear Allah’s punishment for opposing Him in His greatest obligations. Then He described the humble: Those who think they shall meet their Lord—those who reckon that they will meet their Lord, a meeting which is among the greatest of His honors to His servants. He said ‘think’ because they do not know with what end it will be sealed for them, and the outcome is concealed from them; and that they shall return to Him—to His honors and the bliss of His gardens—because of their faith and their humility; yet they do not know that with certainty, for they do not feel safe from changing and altering. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: The believer remains fearful of an evil end; he does not become certain of attaining Allah’s good pleasure until the time his soul is drawn out and the Angel of Death appears to him.”

And His saying: Those who think they shall meet their Lord and that they shall return to Him—‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: “Thinking (ẓann) in the Book of Allah is of two kinds: a thinking of certainty and a thinking of doubt; here it is certainty. The doubt is in His saying: We do not think but with conjecture, and we are not certain; and You thought an evil thought.”

Qur’an 2:47-48 (M. H. Shakir):

O children of Israel, call to mind My favor which I bestowed on you and that I made you excel the nations. And be on your guard against a day when one soul shall not avail another in the least, neither shall intercession on its behalf be accepted, nor shall any compensation be taken from it, nor shall they be helped.

99-/467 _1- al-‘Ayyāshī: from Hārūn b. Muḥammad al-Ḥalabī, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: O Children of Israel. He said: “They are—we, specifically.”

99-/468 _2- From Muḥammad b. ‘Alī, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about His saying, exalted is He: O Children of Israel. He said: “It is specific to the family of Muhammad.”

99-/469 _3- From Abī Dāwūd, from one who heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) say: “I am the servant of Allah; my name is Aḥmad. And I am the servant of Allah; my name is Israel. Whatever He commanded him, He has commanded me; and whatever He meant by him, He has meant me.”

99-/470 _4- Imam Abū Muḥammad al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you: that I sent Moses and Aaron to your forefathers with prophethood, and We guided them to the prophethood of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), the designation of ‘Alī (peace be upon him), and the Imamate of his pure progeny; and We took from you covenants and compacts regarding that—if you fulfill them, you will be kings in the gardens of those deserving His honors and His pleasure. And that I made you excel the nations there—that is, I did that for your forefathers, I favored them in religion and in this world. As for their preference in religion...”
