Yunus Ayah 99-100
Yunus, verses 99–100
The punishment overshadowed them, so they separated themselves from their children and also the livestock from their young; then they cried out to Allah and wailed, so Allah withheld the punishment from them. Jonah departed, angered, and the fish swallowed him; it carried him around through seven seas. I said to him: How long did he remain in the belly of the fish? He said: Three days; then the fish cast him out, and his skin and hair had gone. Allah caused a gourd plant to grow over him, and it shaded him. When he regained strength, it began to wither. He said, My Lord, the tree that shaded me has withered. Allah revealed to him: O Jonah, do you grieve for a tree that shaded you, yet you do not grieve for a hundred thousand or more who were to be punished?! And there will come—God willing—reports about this in Surah al-Anbiya and Surah al-Saffat [1].
Quran 10:99–100 (M. H. Shakir): And if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become believers? And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah’s permission; and He casts uncleanness on those who will not understand.
99-/4985 — ‘Ali b. Ibrahīm: Then Allah said to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): And if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become believers—meaning: If Allah had willed to compel all people to faith, He would have done so.
99-/4986 — Ibn Bābawayh said: Tamīm narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allāh b. Tamīm al-Qurashī, who said: My father narrated to us, from Ahmad b. ‘Alī al-Ansārī, from Abū al-Salt ‘Abd al-Salām b. Sālih al-Harawī, regarding questions which al-Ma’mūn asked Abū al-Hasan ‘Alī b. Mūsā al-Ridā (peace be upon him). Among what he asked him was that al-Ma’mūn said to him: What is the meaning of Allah’s saying: And if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become believers? And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah’s permission? Al-Ridā (peace be upon him) said: My father Mūsā b. Ja‘far narrated to me, from his father Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his father Muhammad b. ‘Alī, from his father ‘Alī b. al-Husayn, from his father al-Husayn b. ‘Alī, from his father ‘Alī b. Abī Tālib (peace be upon them), who said: The Muslims said to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): If you would compel—O Messenger of Allah—those whom you are able to compel among the people to Islam, our numbers would increase and we would be strengthened against our enemy. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I would not meet Allah, the Exalted, with an innovation for which He has given me no instruction, and I am not of those who affect pretensions. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed to him: O Muhammad, and if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed, all of them—by way of compulsion and coercion in this world, just as they will believe upon witnessing and seeing the punishment in the Hereafter. And had I done that to them, they would not have deserved from Me any reward

And no praise either; rather, I want them to believe by choice, not under compulsion, so that they may merit from Me nearness, honor, and perpetual abiding in the Garden of Eternity. Will you then force men till they become believers? As for His saying: And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah’s permission—this is not on the sense of forbidding faith to it, but in the sense that it would not have believed except with Allah’s permission, and His permission is His command to it to believe so long as it is charged with duty and worship; and His compelling it to believe occurs when obligation and worship are lifted from it.
Al-Ma’mūn said: You have relieved me, O Abā al-Hasan—may Allah grant you relief.
99-/4987 — Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Alī b. ‘Uqbah, from his father, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) say: Make this matter of yours for Allah, and do not make it for people; for whatever is for Allah is for Allah, and whatever is for people does not ascend to Allah. Do not dispute with people using your religion, for disputation sickens the heart. Indeed Allah said to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): O Muhammad, surely you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He pleases [1]; and He said: Will you then force men till they become believers. Leave people be, for people have taken from people, while you have taken from the Messenger of Allah and ‘Alī—and they are not the same. I heard my father (peace be upon him) say: When Allah decrees for a servant to enter into this matter, he hastens to it more quickly than a bird to its nest.

Ziyād Abī Sa‘īd, from Muhammad b. ‘Īsā, from Yūnus, from Ibn Muskān, from Abū Basīr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “Rijs (uncleanness) is doubt; by Allah, we never doubt our Lord, ever.” And from him: from Muhammad b. 99-/4989 — Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Saffār: from Muhammad b. Khālid al-Tayālisī, from Sayf b. ‘Amīrah, from Abū Basīr, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “Rijs is doubt, and we never doubt our religion, ever.” And there will come, God willing, additional narration on this under His saying: Only Allah desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O People of the House, and to purify you a thorough purifying [4].

He said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was taken by night (on the Mi‘rāj), Gabriel (peace be upon him) brought him the Burāq; he mounted it and came to Bayt al-Maqdis, and there he met whom he met of his brothers among the prophets (may Allah’s blessings be upon them). Then he returned and informed his companions: I came to Bayt al-Maqdis and returned in the same night, and Gabriel came to me with the Burāq and I rode it; and the sign of that is that I passed by a caravan of Abū Sufyān at a watering-place of such-and-such a clan, and they had lost for themselves a red camel, and the people were intent on searching for it. Some of them said to others: He only went to al-Shām riding a fast mount; but you have gone to al-Shām and know it, so ask him about its markets, its gates, and its merchants. They said: O Messenger of Allah, how is al-Shām, and how are its markets? He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), whenever he was asked about something he did not know, it weighed upon him until it could be seen in his face. He said: While he was thus, Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, here is al-Shām raised up for you. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) turned, and there was al-Shām with its gates, its markets, and its merchants. He said: Where is the one who asked about al-Shām? They said to him: So-and-so and so-and-so. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) answered them concerning all that they asked him. Yet only a few of them believed—and that is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: And signs and warners do not avail a people who would not believe. Then Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: We seek refuge in Allah from failing to believe in Allah and in His Messenger; we have believed in Allah and in His Messenger (may Allah bless him and his family).
