Ar-Ra'd Ayah 43

99-/5635

99-/5635

Al-Tabrisi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “We diminish it by the departure of its scholars, jurists, and the best of its people.”

99-/5636

99-/5636

Ibn Shahr Ashub: From the Tafsir of Waki‘, Sufyan, al-Suddi, and Abu Salih, that ‘Abdullah b. ‘Umar recited the saying of the Exalted: “Do they not see that We are visiting the land, curtailing it of its outlying parts?” (al-Ra‘d 13:41; M. H. Shakir) on the day the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was killed, and he said: “O Commander of the Faithful, you were the greatest edge in knowledge. Today the knowledge of Islam has been diminished and the pillar of faith has passed.”

99-/5637

99-/5637

Al-Za‘farani, from al-Muzani, from al-Shafi‘i, from Malik, al-Suddi, from Abu Salih, who said: When ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) was killed, Ibn ‘Abbas said: “Today knowledge has diminished in the land of Madinah.” Then he said: “The diminishing of the land is the loss of its scholars and its best people. Indeed, Allah does not seize this knowledge by snatching it from the breasts of men; rather He seizes knowledge by taking the souls of the scholars, until when no scholar remains, people take ignorant leaders; they are asked and they give verdicts without knowledge, so they go astray and lead others astray.”

99-/5638

99-/5638

Ibn Babawayh in (al-Faqih), mursal: From al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), that he was asked about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Do they not see that We are visiting the land, curtailing it of its outlying parts?” (al-Ra‘d 13:41; M. H. Shakir). He said: “The loss of the scholars.”

99-/5639

99-/5639

‘Ali b. Ibrahim: On the meaning of the verse, he said: “[It means] the death of its scholars.” And regarding His saying: “And Allah judges; there is none to reverse His judgment” (al-Ra‘d 13:41; M. H. Shakir), that is, there is no one to repel it. And His saying: “And those before them indeed planned, but to Allah belongs all planning” — he said: Allah’s “planning” is the punishment. And: “The unbelievers shall soon know for whom is the (best) end of the abode” — meaning the reward of the Resurrection.

Qur’anic reference: al-Ra‘d 13:43

Mu‘awiyah, who said: I said to Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Book.” He said: “He meant us; and ‘Ali (peace be upon him) is the first of us, the most excellent of us, and the best of us after the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family).”

99-/5641

And from him: from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Muhammad b. al-Hasan, from ‘Abbad b. Sulayman, from Muhammad b. Sulayman, from his father, from Sadir, who said: I, Abu Basir, Yahya the cloth seller, and Dawud b. Kathir were in the session of Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when he came out to us angry. When he sat, he said: “How astonishing are people who claim that we know the unseen! None knows the unseen except Allah, Mighty and Majestic. I resolved to strike my maid so-and-so, and she fled from me, and I did not know in which of the rooms of the house she was.”

Sadir said: When he rose from his session and went into his house, I, Abu Basir, and Maythir entered and said to him: “May we be your ransom, we heard you say such-and-such regarding your maid, while we know that you possess much knowledge, and we do not attribute to you knowledge of the unseen!” He said: “O Sadir, do you not recite the Qur’an?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Did you find in what you recited of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Said he who had some knowledge of the Book: I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you’ (al-Naml 27:40; M. H. Shakir)?” I said: “May I be your ransom, I have recited it.” He said: “Did you recognize the man, and did you know how much knowledge of the Book he had?” I said: “Inform me.” He said: “The measure of a drop of water in the Green Sea. So what is that compared to the knowledge of the Book?” I said: “May I be your ransom, how little that is!” He said: “O Sadir, how great that is, that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, attributes it to the knowledge of which I inform you! O Sadir, did you also find in what you recited of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Book’ (al-Ra‘d 13:43; M. H. Shakir)?” I said: “I have recited it, may I be your ransom.” He said: “Who is more understanding: the one who has all the knowledge of the Book, or the one who has some knowledge of the Book?” I said: “No, rather, the one who has all the knowledge of the Book.” He gestured with his hand to his chest and said: “By Allah, all the knowledge of the Book is with us. By Allah, all the knowledge of the Book is with us.”

And al-Ṣaffar narrated this hadith in (Basā’ir al-Darajāt) with slight variation, with additions and omissions.

‘Ali b. Ibrahim: He said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Umar b. Udhaynah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “He who has knowledge of the Book is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).”

And he was asked: Which is more knowledgeable, the one who has some knowledge of the Book, or the one who has knowledge of the Book? He said: “The knowledge of the one who has some knowledge of the Book, compared to the one who has knowledge of the Book, is only like what a gnat takes on its wing from the water of the sea. And the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: Lo, the knowledge with which Adam (peace be upon him) descended from heaven to earth, and all by which the prophets were distinguished up to the Seal of the Prophets, is among the progeny of the Seal of the Prophets (Allah bless him and his family).”

99-/5643

Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Ṣaffar: from Ya‘qub b. Yazid, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. Faddal, from ‘Abdullah b. Bukayr, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I was with him and they mentioned Sulayman and what he was given of knowledge and what he was given of dominion. He said to me: “And what was Sulayman b. Dawud given? He had only one letter of the Greatest Name. And your companion — of whom Allah said: ‘Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and whoever has knowledge of the Book’ (al-Ra‘d 13:43; M. H. Shakir) — by Allah, with ‘Ali (peace be upon him) was the knowledge of the Book.” I said: “By Allah, you have spoken the truth. May I be your ransom.”

Al-Tabrisi in (Makārim al-Akhlāq), from ‘Abdullah b. Mas‘ud — in a long hadith — from the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family), that he said to him: “O son of Mas‘ud, what benefit is there for one who enjoys himself in the world if he is made to abide in the Fire? ‘They know the outward of this world’s life, while of the hereafter they are heedless’ (al-Rum 30:7; M. H. Shakir). They build houses, fortify palaces, and adorn mosques. Their only concern is the world, devoted to it, relying upon it. Their gods are their bellies. Allah, Exalted, said: ‘And you make strong fortresses that you may abide (forever)? And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants. So be careful of (your duty to) Allah and obey me’ (al-Shu‘ara’ 26:129–131; M. H. Shakir). And Allah, Exalted, said: ‘Have you then considered him who takes his low desires for his god, and Allah has made him err having knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart … Will you not then mind?’ (al-Jathiyah 45:23; M. H. Shakir). He is none other than a hypocrite, who has made his religion his desire and his belly his god; whatever he desires of the lawful and the unlawful, he does not refrain from it. Allah, Exalted, said: ‘And they rejoice in this world’s life, and this world’s life is nothing compared with the hereafter but a temporary enjoyment’ (al-Ra‘d 13:26; M. H. Shakir).”
