99-1 - Makārim al-Akhlāq:449. Al-Ṭabrisī, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd—in a long hadith—from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), that he said to him: O Ibn Mas‘ūd, of what benefit is it to one who enjoys worldly luxury if he is made to abide in the Fire? “They know the outward of this world's life, but of the hereafter they are absolutely heedless.” [1] They build houses and erect palaces, and they adorn the mosques; their only concern is the world—devoted to it, relying upon it; their stomachs are their gods. Allah, the Exalted, said: “And you make strong fortresses that you may abide? And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; so guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me.” [2] And Allah, the Exalted, said: “Have you then considered him who takes his low desire for his god, and Allah has made him err having knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart … Will you not then be mindful?” [3] He is nothing but a hypocrite who has made his religion his desire and his belly his god; whatever he craves of the lawful and the unlawful he does not refrain from it. Allah, the Exalted, said: “And they rejoice in this world's life, and this world's life is nothing compared with the hereafter but a temporary enjoyment.” (Qur’an 13:26, Shakir)
قوله تعالى: كَذٰلِكَ أَرْسَلْنٰاكَ فِي أُمَّةٍ -إلى قوله تعالى- بِالرَّحْمٰنِ [30]
His saying, exalted is He: Thus have We sent you among a nation … to “the Beneficent.” [30]
Translation (M. H. Shakir, 13:30): Thus have We sent you among a nation before which other nations have passed away, that you might recite to them what We have revealed to you, and still they deny the Beneficent! Say: He is my Lord, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely, and to Him is my return.
99-2 - Majma‘ al-Bayān 6:450. Al-Ṭabrisī, from Qatādah, Muqātil, and Ibn Jurayj, regarding His saying, exalted is He: “Thus have We sent you among a nation …”: It was revealed concerning the truce of Ḥudaybiyyah, when they wanted to write the treaty. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said to ‘Alī (peace be upon him): Write: In the name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. Suhayl ibn ‘Amr and the polytheists said: We know not “the All-beneficent” except the lord of Yamāmah—meaning Musaylimah the Liar—so write: In Your name, O Allah. This was how the people of Jāhiliyyah used to write. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Write: This is what Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon. The polytheists of Quraysh said: If you are the Messenger of Allah and then we fought you and repelled you, surely we would have wronged you; rather, write: This is what Muḥammad son of ‘Abd Allāh has agreed upon. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Let us fight them. He said: No; rather, write as they wish. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “Thus have We sent you among a nation …” the verse. And from Ibn ‘Abbās: that it was revealed concerning the disbelievers of Quraysh when the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said to them: Prostrate yourselves to the Beneficent; they said: And what is the Beneficent!
