Qur'an 55:46 And for him who fears to stand before his Lord are two gardens. Qur'an 55:62 And besides these two are two (other) gardens.

99-/10342 – Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb: from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from Ibn Maḥbūb, from Dāwūd al-Raqqī, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “And for him who fears to stand before his Lord are two gardens” He (peace be upon him) said: “One who knows that Allah sees him, hears what he says, and knows what he does—whether good or evil—and that awareness keeps him from doing vile deeds: such a person is the one who has feared the standing before his Lord and has restrained his soul from (its) desire.”

99-/10343 – From the book al-Janna wa al-Nār: Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā, from ʿAwf ibn ʿAbdillāh, from Jābir ibn Yazīd al-Juʿfī, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), who said:

“Indeed, the gardens are four, and that is the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: ‘And for him who fears to stand before his Lord are two gardens’ This is when a man is confronted with a desire from the desires of the world that involves sin, and he remembers the standing before his Lord, so he abandons it out of fear of Him—then this verse is about him. Thus, these are two gardens for the believers and those foremost (in faith).”

99-/10343 – “As for His saying: ‘And besides these two are two (other) gardens’ He says: besides them in terms of excellence, but not besides them in nearness [to Allah]. And they are for the companions of the right hand, and they are the Garden of Bliss and the Garden of Abode. And in these four gardens, the fruits are abundant—like the leaves of trees and the stars [in number].”

99-/10343 – “And surrounding these four gardens is a wall encompassing them, its length being the distance of five hundred years' journey. One brick is of silver, another of gold, another of pearl, and another of ruby. Its mortar is musk and saffron. Its parapets are of light that gleams; a person sees his own reflection in the wall. In the wall are eight gates, and on each gate are two leaves, whose width is like the gallop of a noble horse for one year.”

99-/10344 – ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm said: Aḥmad ibn Idrīs informed us, he said: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Ghālib, from ʿUthmān ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿImrān, who said: I asked Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Exalted is His praise: “And besides them are two other gardens” [Surah al-Raḥmān 55:62], and he said: “They are two green (lush) gardens in this world, from which the believers will eat until the reckoning is completed.”

99-/10345 – al-Ṭabrisī: al-ʿAyyāshī narrated with his chain from Abū Baṣīr, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), who said:

I said to him, “May I be your ransom, inform me about a believing man who has a believing wife, and they both enter Paradise — will one of them marry the other?”

He said: “O Abā Muḥammad, indeed Allah is Wise and Just. If he is better than her, he will be given the choice; if he chooses her, she will be among his spouses. And if she is better than him, she will be given the choice; if she chooses him, he will be her husband.”

99-/10345 – He (the narrator) said: Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) also said:

“Do not say there is only one Paradise, for indeed Allah says: ‘And besides these two, there are two (other) gardens’ [al-Raḥmān 55:62]. And do not say there is only one rank (in Paradise), for indeed Allah the Exalted says: ‘They are (of) degrees, some above others’ [Āl ʿImrān 3:163]. Surely, the people have attained superiority over one another by their deeds.”

99-/10345 – I said to him: Indeed the believers both enter Paradise, and one of them may be in a higher place than the other — would he then desire to meet his companion?

He said: “The one who is above has the right to descend, but the one who is below does not have the right to ascend, because he did not reach that station. However, if they love and desire to meet, they will meet together upon couches.”

99-/10346 – From Al-‘Alaa’ ibn Sayabah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), [he said]: I said to him: People are astonished by us when we say: “A group will come out of the Fire and enter Paradise.” They say to us: “Will they then be with the friends of Allah in Paradise?”

He replied: “O ‘Alaa’, indeed Allah the Exalted says: ‘And besides them are two gardens’ [Qur’an 55:62]. No, by Allah, they will not be with the friends of Allah.”

I said: Were they disbelievers?

He (peace be upon him) said: “No, by Allah. If they were disbelievers, they would not enter Paradise.”

I said: Were they believers?

He (peace be upon him) said: “No, by Allah. If they were believers, they would not have entered the Fire. Rather, they were between that.”

99-/10347 – Ibn Babawayh, through his chain of transmission, from Musa ibn Ibrahim, from Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), said:

Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! A woman may have had two husbands, and they both die and enter Paradise—so to which of them will she belong?”

He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “O Umm Salama, she will choose the one who had the best character and was the best to his family. O Umm Salama, indeed good character has taken the best of this world and the Hereafter.”
