I said: Is “Bismi Allāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm” among the seven? He said: Yes; it is the best of them.

99-/224 _3- Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Babawayh said: Muhammad b. al-Qasim, the commentator known as Abu al-Hasan al-Jurjani (may Allah be pleased with him) told us, saying: Yusuf b. Muhammad b. Ziyad and ‘Ali b. Muhammad b. Sayyar, from their fathers, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali, from his father ‘Ali b. Muhammad, from his father Muhammad b. ‘Ali, from his father al-Rida ‘Ali b. Musa, from his father, from his forefathers, from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon them) that he said: “In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful is a verse of the Opening of the Book, and it is seven verses; its completion is ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.’ I heard the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) say: Indeed Allah, Exalted, said to me: O Muhammad: ‘And certainly We have given you seven of the oft-repeated (verses) and the grand Quran.’ [Qur’an 15:87, M. H. Shakir] He thus singled me out with the favor of the Opening of the Book and made it alongside the Mighty Qur’an. Indeed the Opening of the Book is the most noble of what is in the treasures of the Throne, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has particularized Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) and honored him with it, and did not associate with him in it any of His prophets, except Solomon (peace be upon him), for He granted him from it ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ as He related from Bilqis when she said: ‘Surely I have been delivered a noble letter. Surely it is from Sulaiman, and surely it is in the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.’ [Qur’an 27:29-30, M. H. Shakir] Now then: whoever recites it while holding the guardianship of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) and his pure family, complying with its command, believing in its outward and inward, Allah will grant him for every letter of it better than the world and what is in it of its kinds of wealth and good. And whoever listens to a reciter reciting it will have the like of what the reciter has. So let each of you take much of this good that is presented to you, for it is a booty; let not its time pass such that regret remains in your hearts.”

99-/225 _4-

99-/225 _4- Ibn Babawayh also (as a mursal) said: It was said to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): O Commander of the Faithful, tell us about “In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful”—is it from the Opening of the Book? He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) used to recite it and count it as part of it, and he used to say: “The Opening of the Book is the Seven Oft-repeated.”

99-/228 _7- And from him: from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Muhammad b. Sinan, from Salamah b. Muḥriz, said: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever is not cured by al-Hamd, nothing will cure him.”

H. When the polytheists heard it, they turned fleeing, so Allah revealed: ‘And when you mention your Lord alone in the Quran, they turn their backs in aversion.’ [Qur’an 17:46, M. H. Shakir]”

99-/239 _18- Al-Hasan b. Khurrāzād said—and it is narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him)—that he said: “When a man leads the people (in prayer), a devil comes to the devil who is near the imam and says: ‘Has he mentioned Allah?’—meaning: has he recited ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful’? If he says: Yes, he flees from him. But if he says: No, he mounts the imam’s neck and lets his legs dangle upon his chest, and the devil remains the imam of the people until they finish their prayer.”

99-/240 _19- From ‘Abd al-Malik b. ‘Umar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Iblis wailed four wailings: the first when he was cursed; when he descended to the earth; when Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) was sent during a pause of messengers; and when the Mother of the Book was sent down—‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.’ And he snorted two snorts: when Adam (peace be upon him) ate from the tree, and when Adam was made to descend to the earth”—he said—“and he cursed whoever did that.”

99-/241 _20- From Isma‘il b. Aban, raising it to the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said to Jabir b. ‘Abdillah: “O Jabir, shall I teach you the best surah that Allah has sent down in His Book?” He (Jabir) said: Yes—may my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah—teach it to me. He taught him “Praise be to Allah,” the Mother of the Book. Then he said to him: “O Jabir, shall I inform you about it?” He said: Yes—may my father and mother be your ransom—so inform me. He said: “It is a cure for every disease, except death.”

99-/242 _21- From Salamah b. Muhammad, said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever is not healed by al-Hamd, nothing will heal him.”

99-/243 _22- From Abu Bakr al-Hadrami, said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “If you have a need, recite al-Mathani and another surah, then pray two rak‘ahs, and supplicate to Allah.” I said: May Allah set you right, what is al-Mathani? He said: “The Opening of the Book: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.’”

99-/244 _23- From ‘Isa b. ‘Abdillah, from his father, from his grandfather, from ‘Ali (peace be upon him), who said: It reached him that some people were removing “In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,” so he said: “It is a verse from the Book of Allah; Satan has made them forget it.”

99-/245 _24- From Isma‘il b. Mihran, said: Abu al-Hasan al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful’ is closer to the Greatest Name of Allah than the black of the eye is to its white.”

99-/246 _25- From Sulayman al-Ja‘fari, said: I heard Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “When one of you approaches his wife, let there be tenderness beforehand, for that is gentler to her heart and eases the malice within her. When he comes to his need, let him say: ‘In the Name of Allah’ three times. If he can recite any verse of the Qur’an that comes to him, let him do so; otherwise the basmalah suffices.” The hadith (continues).

99-/247 _26- From Khalid b. al-Mukhtar, said: I heard Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him) say: “What is the matter with them—may Allah fight them! They deliberately targeted the greatest verse in the Book of Allah, and claimed it is an innovation if it is pronounced aloud, and it is: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.’”

99-/248 _27- (Amali al-Shaykh) by his chain, said: al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever is afflicted by an illness, let him recite al-Hamd into his collar seven times; if it departs (then good), otherwise let him recite it seventy times—and I guarantee well-being for him.”

99-/249 _28- (Jami‘ al-Akhbar): from Ibn Mas‘ud, from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): “Whoever wants Allah to save him from the nineteen (angels) of the Zabaniyah, let him recite ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ for it has nineteen letters, and Allah will make each letter a protection against one of them.”

99-/250 _29- And from Ibn Mas‘ud, from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family), who said: “Whoever recites ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ Allah writes for him for every letter four thousand good deeds, erases from him four thousand misdeeds, and raises him four thousand degrees.”

99-/251 _30- And it is narrated from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) that he said: “Whoever recites ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ Allah will build for him in Paradise seventy thousand palaces of a red ruby; in every palace seventy thousand rooms of a white pearl; in every room seventy thousand couches of green chrysolite; upon every couch seventy thousand mattresses of fine silk and brocade; upon it a spouse from the wide-eyed houris who has seventy thousand tresses adorned with pearls and rubies; written on her right cheek: ‘Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’; on her left cheek: ‘‘Ali is the Friend (Wali) of Allah’; on her forehead: ‘al-Hasan’; on her chin: ‘al-Husayn’; and on her lips: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.’” I said: O Messenger of Allah, for whom is this honor? He said: “For whoever says, with reverence and magnification: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.’”

99-/252 _31- And the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) said: “When the believer passes over the Sirat (bridge), and he says, ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ it extinguishes the flame of the Fire; and it (the Fire) will say: ‘Pass, O believer, for your light has extinguished my flame.’”

99-/253 _32- And the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) said: “When the teacher says to the child: [Say:] ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ [and the child says: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful’], Allah writes a writ of immunity for the child, a writ of immunity for his parents, and a writ of immunity for the teacher [from the Fire].”

99-/254 _33- It is narrated that a man named ‘Abd al-Rahman, who was a teacher of children in Medina, taught a child of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) named Ja‘far, and taught him “Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.” When he recited it before his father al-Husayn (peace be upon him), he summoned the teacher and gave him one thousand dinars and one thousand garments, and filled his mouth with pearls. It was said to him about that. He (peace be upon him) replied: “How can my gift be equal to his teaching my child: ‘Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds’?!”

99-/255 _34- Al-Zamakhshari in Rabi‘ al-Abrar: from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): “A supplication whose beginning is ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful’ is not rejected; for my community will come on the Day of Resurrection saying: ‘In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,’ so their good deeds will be heavy in the scales. The nations will say: How weighty are the scales of Muhammad’s community! The prophets will say: The beginning of their words is three Names from the Names of Allah, Most High; if they were placed in one scale-pan and the sins of the creation in the other, their good deeds would outweigh.”
