S 30 Ayat 30

قوله تعالى:

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا لاٰ تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللّٰهِ ذٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَ لٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النّٰاسِ لاٰ يَعْلَمُونَ [30]

The Words of Allah, the Exalted:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state — the nature made by Allah in which He has made men; there is no altering of Allah's creation; that is the right religion, but most people do not know." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

99-/8326 _2- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ:عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ السِّنْدِيِّ،عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً ،قَالَ:«هِيَ الْوَلاَيَةُ».

99-/8326 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Salih ibn as-Sindi, from Ja‘far ibn Bashir, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: "Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state (ḥanīfan)" — he (peace be upon him) said: "It is the Wilayah (Divinely appointed authority and guardianship)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8327 _3-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ،عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: قُلْتُ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ؟قَالَ:«التَّوْحِيدُ».

/8327 _3- And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked: "What is meant by Allah’s saying: The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)?" He (peace be upon him) replied: "It is Tawhid (the oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8328 _4-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى،عَنْ يُونُسَ،عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،مَا تِلْكَ الْفِطْرَةُ؟قَالَ:

«هِيَ الْإِسْلاَمُ،فَطَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ حِينَ أَخَذَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ،قَالَ: أَ لَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ [1]؟قَالُوا:بَلَى [2]،وَ فِيهِ الْمُؤْمِنُ وَ الْكَافِرُ».

/8328 _4- And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Yunus, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." What is that nature?

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is Islam. Allah created them upon it when He took their covenant regarding Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). He said: Am I not your Lord? [Surat Al-A‘raf 7:172, M. H. Shakir], and they said: Yes [Bala]. In that covenant are both the believer and the disbeliever." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8329 _4-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رِئَابٍ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:

«فَطَرَهُمْ جَمِيعاً عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

/8329 _4- And from him, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Ali ibn Ri’ab, from Zurārah, who said:

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them all upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8330 _5-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ،عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: حُنَفٰاءَ لِلّٰهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِ [3]،قَالَ:«الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ اللَّهُ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا،لاَ تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ-قَالَ-فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَعْرِفَةِ بِهِ».

قَالَ زُرَارَةُ:وَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: وَ إِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَ أَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلىٰ أَنْفُسِهِمْ أَ لَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قٰالُوا بَلىٰ [4]الْآيَةَ،قَالَ:«أَخْرَجَ مِنْ ظَهْرِ آدَمَ ذُرِّيَّتَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ،فَخَرَجُوا كَالذَّرِّ، فَعَرَّفَهُمْ،وَ أَرَاهُمْ نَفْسَهُ،وَ لَوْلاَ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَعْرِفْ أَحَدٌ رَبَّهُ-قَالَ-وَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ):كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ،يَعْنِي عَلَى الْمَعْرِفَةِ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خَالِقُهُ،كَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ: وَ لَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمٰاوٰاتِ وَ الْأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللّٰهُ [5]».

/8330 _5- And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Zurārah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "Upright for Allah, not associating anything with Him" [Surat An-Nahl 16:123, M. H. Shakir]. He (peace be upon him) said: "The ḥanīfiyyah (pure monotheism) is from the fiṭrah (innate nature) upon which Allah has created mankind. There is no altering Allah’s creation — He created them upon the knowledge of Him."

Zurārah said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: "And when your Lord brought forth from the children of Adam, from their backs, their descendants, and made them bear witness against their own souls: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes." [Surat Al-A‘raf 7:172, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "He brought forth from the back of Adam his descendants until the Day of Resurrection. They came out like specks, and He made them recognize, and showed them Himself. Had it not been for that, no one would have known his Lord."

And he (peace be upon him) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Every child is born upon the fiṭrah — meaning upon the knowledge that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is his Creator."

And similarly is His saying: "And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly say: Allah." [Surat Luqman 31:25, M. H. Shakir]

وَ رَوَاهُ ابْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ فِي كِتَابِ(التَّوْحِيدِ)،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ،وَ مُحَمَّدِ ابْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْخَطَّابِ،وَ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ،جَمِيعاً،عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ،عَنِ ابْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: حُنَفٰاءَ لِلّٰهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِ ،وَ ذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَى آخِرِهِ [6].

And Ibn Babawayh also narrated it in the book At-Tawhid, from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Hashim, Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Khattab, and Ya‘qub ibn Yazid, all from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Zurārah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "Upright for Allah, not associating anything with Him", and he mentioned the hadith to its end. [6] [Surat An-Nahl 16:123, M. H. Shakir]

/8331 _6-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ،عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَلَبِيِّ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

/8331 _6- And from him, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Faddal, from Abu Jamilah, from Muhammad al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)", he (peace be upon him) said: "He created them upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." 99-/8332 _7- ابْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ،عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ فُضَيْلٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ

عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«التَّوْحِيدُ».

99-/8332 _7- Ibn Babawayh, from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from al-‘Ala’ ibn Fudayl, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." He (peace be upon him) said: "It is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8333 _8-وعَنْهُ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ(رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ)،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ،عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ،عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: قُلْتُ:

فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ؟قَالَ:«التَّوْحِيدُ».

/8333 _8- And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan as-Saffar narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Hashim, from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)?"

He (peace be upon him) replied: "It is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8334 _9-وعَنْهُ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ الْمُتَوَكِّلِ(رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ)،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ،عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ،عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا مَا تِلْكَ الْفِطْرَةُ؟قَالَ:«هِيَ الْإِسْلاَمُ،فَطَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ حِينَ أَخَذَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ،قَالَ: أَ لَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ [1]وَ فِيهِمُ الْمُؤْمِنُ وَ الْكَافِرُ».

/8334 _9- And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Mutawakkil (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, he said: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Ubayd narrated to us, from Yunus ibn ‘Abd ar-Rahman, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic’s saying: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." What is that nature?

/8335 _10-وعَنْهُ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ(رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ)،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ،عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ،وَ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ،عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ،عَنِ ابْنِ بُكَيْرٍ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

/8335 _10- And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan as-Saffar narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Hashim and Ya‘qub ibn Yazid, from Ibn Faddal, from Ibn Bukayr, from Zurārah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8336 _11-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ،عَنْ أَبِي جَمِيلَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَلَبِيِّ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:

«فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

/8336 _11- And from him, from his father, who said: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn Faddal, from Abu Jamilah, from Muhammad al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8337 _12-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ،وَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنَيْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى،عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رِئَابٍ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«فَطَرَهُمْ جَمِيعاً عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

/8337 _12- And from him, from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad and ‘Abdullah, the two sons of Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Ali ibn Ri’ab, from Zurārah, who said:

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them all upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8338 _13-وعَنْهُ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ(رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ)،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ الْوَاسِطِيِّ،عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ يُونُسَ،عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«التَّوْحِيدُ،وَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ،وَ عَلِيٌّ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمَا وَ آلِهِمَا)».

/8338 _13- And from him, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Walid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan as-Saffar narrated to us, from ‘Ali ibn Hassan al-Wasiti, from al-Hasan ibn Yunus, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Kathir, the freed slave of Abu Ja‘far, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and ‘Ali is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon them both and their family)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8339 _14-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ،عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ،قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي كِتَابِهِ:

فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ؟قَالَ:«فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ عِنْدَ الْمِيثَاقِ،وَ عَلَى مَعْرِفَتِهِ أَنَّهُ رَبُّهُمْ».

قُلْتُ:وَ خَاطَبُوهُ؟قَالَ:فَطَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ،ثُمَّ قَالَ:«لَوْ لاَ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا مَنْ رَبُّهُمْ،وَ لاَ مَنْ رَازِقُهُمْ».

/8339 _14- And from him, from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from his father, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mughīrah, from Ibn Muskan, from Zurārah, who said:

I said to Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): "May Allah rectify you, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says in His Book: The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them upon Tawhid at the time of the covenant, and upon the knowledge that He is their Lord."

I asked: "And did they address Him (speak to Him)?"

He (peace be upon him) lowered his head, then said: "Had it not been for that, they would not have known who their Lord is, nor who their Sustainer is." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

99-/8340 _15- أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْبَرْقِيُّ:عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ،عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«فُطِرُوا عَلَى التَّوْحِيدِ».

99-/8340 _15- Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Faddal, from ‘Abdullah ibn Bukayr, from Zurārah, who said:

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)."

He (peace be upon him) said: "They were created upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8341 _16-وعَنْهُ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ،عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: حُنَفٰاءَ لِلّٰهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِ [1]،مَا الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ؟قَالَ:«هِيَ الْفِطْرَةُ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا،فَطَرَ الْخَلْقَ عَلَى مَعْرِفَتِهِ».

/8341 _16- And from him, from his father, from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Umar ibn Udhaynah, who said:

I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah:

"Upright for Allah, not associating anything with Him." [Surat An-Nahl 16:123, M. H. Shakir]

What is ḥanīfiyyah (the upright religion)?

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is the fiṭrah (innate nature) upon which Allah has created mankind. He created the creation upon knowledge of Him."

/8342 _17-وَعَنْهُ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ،عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ،عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«فَطَرَهُمْ عَلَى مَعْرِفَةِ أَنَّهُ رَبُّهُمْ، وَ لَوْلاَ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يَعْلَمُوا إِذَا سُئِلُوا مَنْ رَبِّهِمْ،وَ لاَ مَنْ رَازِقُهُمْ».

/8342 _17- And from him, from his father, from ‘Ali ibn an-Nu‘man, from Ibn Muskan, from Zurārah, who said:

I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "He created them upon the knowledge that He is their Lord. And were it not for that, they would not know, when asked, who their Lord is, nor who their Sustainer is."

99-/8343 _18- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ،قَالَ:أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنِ الْمُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُمْهُورٍ،عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ: فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً ،قَالَ:«هِيَ الْوَلاَيَةُ».

99-/8343 _18- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Jumhur, from Ja‘far ibn Bashir, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state (ḥanīfan)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is the Wilayah (Divinely appointed authority and guardianship)."

99-/8344 _19- قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرُّمَّانِيُّ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ ابْنُ مُوسَى الرِّضَا(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ(عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلاَمُ)، فِي قَوْلِهِ: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«هِيَ:لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ)،عَلِيٌّ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيُّ اللَّهِ،إِلَى هَاهُنَا التَّوْحِيدُ».

99-/8344 _19- He said: Al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, he said: Al-Haytham ibn ‘Abdillah ar-Rummani narrated to us, he said: ‘Ali ibn Musa ar-Ridha (peace be upon him) narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon them), regarding the saying of Allah:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is: Lā ilāha illā Allāh, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), ‘Ali is the Commander of the Faithful and the Friend of Allah — up to here is Tawhid (Oneness of Allah)."

/8345 _20-وعَنْهُ،قَالَ:أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ،عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ النَّابِ،وَ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ،عَنِ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ،وَ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً ،قَالَ:«قُمْ فِي الصَّلاَةِ،وَ لاَ تَلْتَفِتْ يَمِيناً وَ لاَ شِمَالاً».

تَعَالَى: فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً ،قَالَ:«قُمْ فِي الصَّلاَةِ،وَ لاَ تَلْتَفِتْ يَمِيناً وَ لاَ شِمَالاً».

/8345 _20- And from him, he said: Ahmad ibn Idris narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman an-Nabi, and Khalaf ibn Hammad, from al-Fudayl ibn Yasār and Rib‘i ibn ‘Abdillah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state (ḥanīfan)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "Stand in the prayer, and do not turn to the right nor to the left."

99-/8346 _21- الشَّيْخُ فِي(التَّهْذِيبِ):بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الطَّاطَرِيِّ،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ،عَنِ ابْنِ مُسْكَانَ،عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً ،قَالَ:«أَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُقِيمَ وَجْهَهُ لِلْقِبْلَةِ لَيْسَ فِيهِ شَيْءٌ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ،خَالِصاً مُخْلِصاً».

99-/8346 _21- The Shaykh in At-Tahdhib, through his chain of narration, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan at-Tatari, from Muhammad ibn Abi Hamzah, from Ibn Muskan, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state (ḥanīfan)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "He commanded him to direct his face towards the Qiblah, with nothing in it from the worship of idols, purely and sincerely (for Allah alone)."

99-/8347 _22- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْمَالِكِيُّ [1]،عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى،عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ،عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ،عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: فَأَقِمْ

وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفاً فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«هِيَ الْوَلاَيَةُ».

99-/8347 _22- Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas said: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Maliki narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from Ja‘far ibn Bashir, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state— the nature made by Allah in which He has made men." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

99-/8348 _23- Muhammad ibn al-Hasan as-Saffar, through his chain of narration from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Kathir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"Then set your face uprightly for religion in the right state— the nature made by Allah in which He has made men." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "Upon Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah), and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and that ‘Ali is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)."

99-/8349 _24- الشَّيْخُ فِي(مَجَالِسِهِ)بِإِسْنَادِهِ الْمُتَّصِلِ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ:

فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«التَّوْحِيدُ».

99-/8349 _24- The Shaykh in Majālisuh, through his connected chain of narration from Zurārah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

I asked him about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah)."

99-/8350 _25- الْعَيَّاشِيُّ:عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْجُعْفِيِّ،عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)،قَالَ: «كَانَتْ شَرِيعَةُ نُوحٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)أَنَّ يُعْبَدَ اللَّهُ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ،وَ الْإِخْلاَصِ،وَ خَلْعِ الْأَنْدَادِ،وَ هِيَ الْفِطْرَةُ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا». و للحديث تتمة،تقدم بتمامه في سورة هود [2].

99-/8350 _25- Al-‘Ayyāshī, from Isma‘il al-Ju‘fi, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said:

"The Shari‘ah of Nuh (peace be upon him) was that Allah be worshipped with Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah), sincerity, and the rejection of equals (false deities). And this is the fiṭrah (innate nature) upon which Allah has created mankind."

And the complete narration has already been mentioned in full in Surat Hud. [2]

99-/8351 _26- ابْنُ شَهْرِ آشُوبَ:عَنِ الرِّضَا،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ جَدِّهِ(عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلاَمُ) ،فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النّٰاسَ عَلَيْهٰا ،قَالَ:«هُوَ التَّوْحِيدُ،وَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ

اللَّهِ،وَ عَلِيٌّ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ(عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلاَمُ)إِلَى هَاهُنَا التَّوْحِيدُ».

99-/8351 _26- Ibn Shahr Ashub, from ar-Ridha, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted:

"The nature made by Allah in which He has made men (fiṭrat Allāh allatī faṭara al-nāsa ‘alayhā)." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]

He (peace be upon him) said: "It is Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and ‘Ali is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon them both) — up to here is Tawhid."

99-/8352 _27- ابْنُ بَابَوَيْهِ:عَنْ أَبِيهِ،قَالَ:حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،عَنْ أَبِيهِ،عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ،عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ نُعَيْمٍ الصَّحَّافِ،قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ):أَ يَكُونُ الرَّجُلُ مُؤْمِناً،قَدْ ثَبَتَ لَهُ الْإِيمَانُ، ثُمَّ يَنْقُلُهُ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ الْإِيمَانِ إِلَى الْكُفْرِ؟قَالَ:«إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْعَدْلُ،وَ إِنَّمَا بَعَثَ الرُّسُلَ لِيَدْعُوا النَّاسَ إِلَى الْإِيمَانِ بِاللَّهِ،وَ لاَ يَدْعُوا أَحَداً إِلَى الْكُفْرِ».

99-/8352 _27- Ibn Babawayh, from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to me, from Ahmad ibn Abi ‘Abdillah, from his father, from more than one person, from al-Husayn ibn Nu‘aym as-Sahhaf, who said:

I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): "Can a man be a believer, having firm faith, and then Allah transfers him after belief to disbelief?"

He (peace be upon him) replied: "Indeed, Allah is the Just, and He only sent the messengers to call people to belief in Allah, not to call anyone to disbelief."

قُلْتُ:فَيَكُونُ الرَّجُلُ كَافِراً،قَدْ ثَبَتَ لَهُ الْكُفْرُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ،فَيَنْقُلُهُ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ إِلَى الْإِيمَانِ؟قَالَ:«إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ خَلَقَ النَّاسَ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ الَّتِي فَطَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا،لاَ يَعْرِفُونَ إِيمَاناً بِشَرِيعَةٍ،وَ لاَ كُفْراً بِجُحُودٍ،ثُمَّ ابْتَعَثَ اللَّهُ الرُّسُلَ إِلَيْهِمْ يَدْعُونَهُمْ إِلَى الْإِيمَانِ بِاللَّهِ حُجَّةً لِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ،فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ هَدَاهُ اللَّهُ،وَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ لَمْ يَهْدِهِ».

I said: "Can a man be a disbeliever, with disbelief firmly established for him in the sight of Allah, and then Allah transfers him after that from disbelief to faith?"

He (peace be upon him) replied: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created people upon the fiṭrah (innate nature) upon which He created them; they neither recognized faith by a specific law, nor disbelief by denial. Then Allah sent the messengers to them, calling them to faith in Allah, as a proof of Allah against them. So among them are those whom Allah guided, and among them are those whom He did not guide."

99-/8353 _28- الطَّبْرِسِيُّ فِي(جَوَامِعِ الْجَامِعِ)فِي مَعْنَى الْآيَةِ:قَوْلُهُ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ): «كُلُّ مَوْلُودٍ يُولَدُ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ، حَتَّى يَكُونَ أَبَوَاهُ هُمَا اللَّذَانِ يُهَوِّدَانِهِ وَ يُنَصِّرَانِهِ».

99-/8353 _28- At-Ṭabrisī in Jawāmi‘ al-Jāmi‘, regarding the meaning of the verse, narrated the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family):

"Every newborn is born upon the fiṭrah, until his parents make him a Jew or a Christian."

This is in explanation of Allah’s saying: "The nature made by Allah in which He has made men." [Surat Ar-Rum 30:30, M. H. Shakir]
