28. Special Grace for a Mourning Reciter
(1) My respected friend Haj Shaykh Husain Ghaffarnejad narrated:
Someone saw a person in a dream who was sitting calmly in his place, while others were going and taking something and coming back, but he did not move from his spot.
They asked him: “Why aren’t you going too?”
He replied: “They go to collect their share and return, but because my son is a reciter of elegies (rozeh-khwan), my share is sent directly to me from Hazrat Sayyid al-Shuhada (Imam Husain, peace be upon him).”
Later they saw that he, too, went like the others to collect his share himself. When they asked him why, he replied:
“My son passed away, and so my share was cut off.”

(2) The late Mir Abbas Mohaddith said:
In Najaf Ashraf there was a Sayyid reciter named Mirza Hadi, whose gatherings were filled with the sound of crying and wailing, and people would be overcome with grief at his recitations.
Near the end of his life, he lost his voice, and he was greatly distressed by this. One day I was present at his pulpit, and he said:
“Last night I saw my grandmother, Hazrat Zahra (peace be upon her), in a dream. I complained to her about my voice.”
She replied: “You don’t even need your voice, for we have given you a greater power of expression than that.”
I looked carefully at her face, and she asked:
“Why are you staring so intently?”
I said: “Are you not the mother of the Sayyids (descendants of the Prophet)?”
She replied:
“I thought you wanted to see the mark of the slap, for even now the mark of the slap remains on my face.”
Then she recited:
“May the curse of Allah be upon the oppressors.”

"Apart from writing, do you expect anything else from me?"
His father replied:
*"Until you have climbed the pulpit and said ‘Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah’, I will not consider you a servant of Imam Husain (a.s.). Because I once saw my own father, who was a reciter of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.), in a dream, and asked him: ‘Did all those elegies you recited help you?’ He replied: ‘Yes, very much so.’”

(4) On Wednesday, 9/5/81 (20 Jumada al-Awwal 1423 AH), the late Haj Mirza Abd al-Rahim Qaimi quoted from the late Nazem Agha, who in turn narrated from the late Mulla Sadiq Marzabadi:
On the day of Ashura, I completely lost my voice. I told the person who cared for my horse:
"Today afternoon I will not go to any gathering."
I went, had lunch, and slept. In a dream, I saw the sacred presence of Lady Zahra (peace be upon her). She said to me:
"Why did you not go to the gatherings?"
I replied:
"Dear Lady, my chest is exhausted."
She said:
"We want a tired chest. Rise and go, for the mourners of my son have gathered and are sitting, waiting for the reciter."

(5) On the same day, in the same gathering, my respected friend Agha Maqami said:
*"In the company of the late Vahdat and the late Sayyid Rida Aal Muhammad, we went to visit the late Nazem Agha. He said that I had developed a hernia, and they told me surgery was necessary.
I said: ‘Then what is Imam Husain (a.s.) for?’
I went and sought intercession, and by the kindness of the Master (Imam Husain), it was cured, and I did not need any surgery or treatment."*

(6) The capable preacher, Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Agha Shaykh Hasan Yousufi, said on Friday 11/5/85 (which was 6 Muharram 1428 AH) on the pulpit in Isfahan:
“The famous Arab preacher Agha Shaykh Hamid Muhajir was imprisoned for three years in Baghdad. On the night of Tasua, they asked him to recite elegies for the prisoners. He refused and said:
‘It has been three years since Imam Husain (a.s.) has remembered me.’
No matter how much they insisted, he would not agree.
That night, in a dream, he saw the late Shaykh Abdul Zahra bringing a dish of food and saying:
‘Imam Husain (a.s.) has sent this food for you.’
He refused to eat it and said:
‘I am upset, unless the Imam himself comes in person.’
Then Imam Husain (a.s.) personally came and with love fed him morsel by morsel, and said:
‘In three days you will be free.’
Three days later, they called the names of seventeen students from Najaf who were in prison, and said:
‘You are all free. A minibus is ready to take you to Najaf and drop you off at the shrine.’

(7) On Sunday night 19/8/87 (10 Dhu al-Qa‘dah 1429 AH), Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Shirazi, speaking about his late great-uncle Sayyid Ja‘far Shirazi (passed away 1370 AH, buried in the shrine of Hazrat Abd al-Azim), continued:
A few nights ago, Ayatollah Wahid Khorasani was here and said:
*‘I used to attend the classes of the late Ayatollah Sayyid Abd al-Hadi Shirazi. One day in class they brought the news that the brother-in-law of Sayyid Abd al-Hadi, the late Sayyid Ja‘far Shirazi, had passed away.
He said: *‘Now that he has died, let me tell you what I saw:
On the first night of Muharram, I dreamed I was in my room. Two angels came, placed two chairs, then Imam Husain (a.s.) and Hazrat Qamar Bani Hashim (a.s.) came and sat on the chairs.
In the hand of Hazrat Abu’l-Fadl (a.s.) was a list of reciters. Imam Husain (a.s.) mentioned one of the names and said:
‘Cross out his name and write down Sayyid Ja‘far’s name instead.’
Then they departed, and the angels took the chairs away.
In the morning, when Sayyid Ja‘far came, I asked him:
‘Have you become a reciter?’
He said:
‘No.’
I told him the dream. He cried a lot and said:
*‘Last night when I returned from the shrine, I remembered this noble hadith: “Whoever cries, makes others cry, or even pretends to cry for Husain, Paradise becomes obligatory for him.”
I thought to myself: I am someone who cries, but I do not make others cry. It occurred to me that I should prepare a Maqtal (book of the martyrdom narratives) and for ten nights read it to my family members.
Since I did not have a book at home, I went to visit some friends, they did not have one either, until one of them said: ‘I have the book Jala’ al-‘Uyun of Majlisi which contains the Maqtal.’
I borrowed it for ten nights and told my family: ‘From tonight for ten nights I will read for you.’
They were happy. I recited for my wife and my two small daughters.
That other reciter whose name the Imam ordered to be removed, had decided that very night to stop reciting altogether.’*

One day he bid farewell to both mosques, saying: “I am going to Harand.” When asked “When will you return?” he replied: “I will not return.”
He went to Harand, stayed there for a week, and after a week ascended the pulpit, recited a sermon, and said: “Send blessings (salawat).”
The people sent salawat and waited for him to begin his speech, but he remained silent. They realized he had passed away on the pulpit.
They brought a doctor, who said: “He has been gone for quite some time.”
Later he was seen in a dream, and asked: “What happened?”
He replied: *“As soon as I finished the sermon, the Holy Five (Panjetan-e-Tayyibah) came and said: ‘We have come to take you with us.’”

(9) The respected preacher and sincere reciter of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.), the late Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi Khurshidi, on the day of Arbaeen of Imam Husain (a.s.), 11/11/88 (solar) [equivalent to 20 Safar 1431 AH], after Maghrib and Isha prayers in the Hussainiya of the Karbala’is of holy Mashhad, during his speech, suddenly looked toward the door of the Hussainiya and said: “Send blessings (salawat).”
The people sent salawat and looked toward the door, but saw nothing, and then saw that Khurshidi fell from the pulpit and passed away. In clearer terms, he completed and then fell.
Interestingly, at noon of that same day, I had met him at Imam Reza’s school, and he was smiling as always, with no sign of any illness.
