Chapter on what the Imams from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them) were given in traveling the lands, and their resemblance to Dhul-Qarnayn, Al-Khidr, and the companion of Solomon, and what they have of increase.

Translation:
I said, “O Commander of the Faithful, have we traveled two farsakhs?” He replied, “O Salman, you have traveled fifty thousand farsakhs and circled the world twenty thousand times.” I said, “My master, how is this?” He said, “O Salman, if Dhu-l-Qarnayn went around its East and West and reached the barrier of Gog and Magog, how would it be difficult for me, while I am the Commander of the Faithful and the successor of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds? O Salman, have you not read His saying, ‘The Knower of the unseen! so He does not reveal His secrets to any, except to him whom He chooses as an apostle’ [1]?” I said, “Yes, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said, “O Salman, I am the one singled out by the Messenger whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made aware of His unseen. I am the divinely taught scholar. I am the one for whom Allah has made hardships easy and folded up what is distant.” Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard a crier calling in the sky—I heard the voice but did not see the person—saying: “You have spoken the truth, you have spoken the truth. You are the truthful, the veracious. Blessings of Allah be upon you.” Then he leapt up, mounted his horse, and I mounted with him; he called out to them, and the two of them flew in the air, and we were at the gate of Kufa. All this had taken place within three hours of the night. He said to me, “O Salman, woe, then woe to whoever does not know us with the knowledge truly due to us, and denies our guardianship. O Salman, which of the two is superior: Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) or Solomon son of David (peace be upon him)?” I said, “Rather, Muhammad is superior.” He said, “O Salman, Asif son of Barkhiya was able to carry the throne of Bilqis to Solomon in the blink of an eye, and he had knowledge from the Book. So how would I not be able to do that, when I possess a thousand books and twenty-four thousand books? Allah, Exalted, sent down to Sheth son of Adam fifty scrolls, and to Idris (peace be upon him) thirty, and to Abraham the Friend (peace be upon him) twenty, and the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Mighty Furqan.” I said, “You have spoken the truth, O Commander of the Faithful. Thus is the Imam.” He said, “Know, O Salman, the one who doubts our affairs and our sciences is like one who disputes regarding knowledge of us and our rights. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has made it obligatory in His Book in more than one place and has clarified therein what must be known, and it is not concealed” [2].

Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said, “The scholar of Medina is more knowledgeable than your scholar.” He said, “To what extent has the knowledge of the scholar of Medina reached?” He said, “He travels in an hour of the day the distance the sun travels in a year, until he traverses a thousand worlds like this world of yours, who do not know that Allah created Adam or Iblis.” He said, “Do they know you?” He said, “Yes. Allah has obligated upon them nothing but our guardianship and disavowal of our enemies.”

8- And from him: from Muhammad b. Hassan, from ‘Ali b. Khalid—who was a Zaydi—who said: I was in al-‘Askar, and it reached me that there was a man imprisoned there, brought in chains from the region of al-Sham, and they said he had claimed prophethood. ‘Ali said: I conciliated the doorkeepers and chamberlains until I reached him. He was a man of understanding. I said to him, “O man, what is your story and your case?” He said: I was in al-Sham, worshiping Allah at the grave of the head of al-Husayn b. ‘Ali (blessings of Allah be upon them). While I was in my worship, a person came to me and said, “Come with us.” I went with him, and before I knew it I was with him in the Mosque of Kufa. He said to me, “Do you recognize this mosque?” I said, “Yes, this is the Mosque of Kufa.” He prayed, and I prayed with him. Before I knew it, I was in the Mosque of the Messenger (may Allah bless him and his family) in Medina. He greeted the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), and I greeted, and he prayed and I prayed. He invoked blessings upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and supplicated for him. Before I knew it, I was in Mecca, and I remained with him until he completed his rites and I completed mine with him. He said: Before I knew it, I was back at my place in al-Sham where I had been worshiping Allah, and he departed. When the following year came during the days of the season, behold, there he was, and he did with me as he had done the first time. When we had completed our rites and he returned me to al-Sham and was about to leave me, I said to him, “I adjure you by the One who empowered you to do what I have seen, that you inform me who you are.” He lowered his head for a long while and then said, “I am Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Musa.” The news rose up to Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Malik al-Zayyat, so he sent for me, seized me, shackled me in iron, carried me to Iraq, and imprisoned me as you see. I said to him, “Shall I raise your case to Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Malik?” He said, “And who will take the petition to him for me?” So I brought him paper and ink, and he wrote his case to Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Malik, mentioning in his petition what had happened. He [al-Zayyat] wrote on the petition: “Tell the one who brought you in a single night from al-Sham to Kufa, and from Kufa to Medina, and from Medina to Mecca, and returned you from Mecca to the place from which he brought you out, to bring you out of your prison.”

‘Ali said: His case distressed me and I felt compassion for him, so I counseled him to be patient and steadfast. Then one morning I went early to him, and behold, the soldiers, the chief of the guard, the warden, and a great multitude were investigating his situation. I said, “What is the matter?” They said, “The one brought from al-Sham who claimed prophethood was missing since last night; we do not know whether the earth swallowed him or the birds snatched him in the air.” And ‘Ali b. Khalid said: He was a Zaydi, but afterward he affirmed the Imamate, and his belief became good. And this hadith was narrated by Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from Ahmad b. Idris, from Muhammad b. Hassan, from ‘Ali b. Khalid. Muhammad—who was a Zaydi—said: I was in al-‘Askar, and it reached me that there was a man imprisoned there, brought from the region of al-Sham, and he mentioned the very same report [1].

The hadith of Jabir from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) has already preceded, and the report is lengthy: that he entered with him into the darkness in which is the Fountain of Life that Dhu-l-Qarnayn traversed, and they came to five worlds. It was mentioned earlier under His saying, “And thus did We show Abraham the kingdom of the heavens and the earth that he might be of those who are sure.” The narrations on this are many; we have sufficed with this for fear of prolixity.

Ibrahim said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) informed Quraysh of the story of the Companions of the Cave, and the story of Khidr and Moses, and the story of Dhu-l-Qarnayn, they said, “One question remains.” The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said, “What is it?” They said, “When will the Hour be established?” So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: “They ask you about the hour, when will be its taking place? Say: The knowledge of it is only with my Lord” [3]. This was the cause of the revelation of Surat al-Kahf. And this verse—“They ask you about the hour, when will be its taking place”—is in Surat al-A‘raf, and it would have been fitting for it to be in this surah.
