The Attachment of Following and Shared Nature

The Attachment of Following and Shared Nature

The sixth and seventh types are as follows:

The sixth is the attachment of following (Tabee'ah).

Therefore, let us weep by following the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), for emulating him is obligatory.

Indeed, let us follow all the Prophets (a.s.) and Awṣiyāʾ (a.s.).

Rather, let us follow the heavens and the earth, the wild beasts and the birds, Paradise and Hell, the jinn and the angels, that which is seen and that which is unseen.

Indeed, even the trees and the stones.

Rather, even iron itself, as occurred in the story of the nails of the Ark of Nūḥ (a.s.), which wept blood. [557]

Therefore, let your tears flow in imitation of them.

After all, your heart cannot be harder than stone and iron.

The seventh is the attachment of shared nature and kinship of kind (Jinsiyyat), which itself causes tenderness and sympathy, even without considering any other factor.

For example, if you were to hear that a man, without having committed any wrongdoing, had been detained in a desert together with his family, small children, young sons, brothers, sisters, and companions, and that people had treated him in the manner that you have heard Imam Husain (a.s.) was treated, your heart would certainly burn with sorrow for him.

Indeed, even if you were to hear that a guilty person—one who had declared the lawful unlawful and the unlawful lawful—or even your own enemy who disbelieved in Allah, had been treated in such a manner, you would still feel compassion for him.

And Imam Husain (a.s.) used to say:

“Woe unto you, O people! Are you seeking revenge upon me for blood that I have shed? Or for wealth of yours that I have unlawfully taken? Or because I have altered the Sharīʿah?”

Yet they gave him no answer. [558]

The author says:

May I be sacrificed for you, O my master!

Even if you had done all of these things, it still would not have been fitting for people to treat you in such a manner.

Therefore, O Shiʿah, let us weep from this perspective of compassion and mercy.

For whoever does not weep in this manner is not among the people of mercy and noble character.
