[1] The scholars have differed regarding the isolated letters with which the surahs are opened. Some maintain that they are among the ambiguous matters whose knowledge Allah, Exalted is He, has reserved to Himself, and none knows their interpretation but He; and this is what is transmitted from our Imams (peace be upon them). The generality have reported from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) that he said: “Every book has an elite, and the elite of this Book are the letters of spelling.” And from al-Sha‘bi: Allah has, in every book, a secret, and His secret in the Qur’an is the various letters of the alphabet mentioned at the beginnings of the surahs. Others have interpreted them in various ways.
