Al-Kahf Ayah 109-110

Translation: Any good deed: “That is their recompense, hell, because they disbelieved and took My signs and My messengers in mockery.” By “signs” is meant the trustees (the vicegerents), whom they took in mockery. Then He mentioned those who believe in these signs, saying: “Surely (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, their place of entertainment shall be the gardens of the paradise; Abiding therein; they shall not desire removal from them.” That is, they do not depart, nor do they ask to be transferred from it.

Quran 18:106 Arabic:

Quran 18:106 (M. H. Shakir): This is their recompense, hell, because they disbelieved and held My communications and My messengers in mockery.

Quran 18:107-108 Arabic:

Quran 18:107-108 (M. H. Shakir): Surely (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, their place of entertainment shall be the gardens of the paradise; Abiding therein; they shall not desire removal from them.

Ja‘far (peace be upon them) narrated to us. He said: I asked my father about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Surely those who believe and do good deeds, their place of entertainment shall be the gardens of the paradise; Abiding therein; they shall not desire removal from them.” He said: “It was revealed about the Family of Muhammad (may the blessings of Allah be upon them all).”

99-/6815 - Al-‘Ayyashi: From ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: There is no verse in the Qur’an, “those who believe and do good deeds,” except that ‘Ali (peace be upon him) is its leader and noblest one; and there is not a single man among the companions of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) except that Allah reproached him, and He never mentioned ‘Ali (peace be upon him) except with good. ‘Ikrimah said: I indeed know of a virtue of ‘Ali (peace be upon him)—were I to relate it, the extremities of the heavens and the earth would become distant.

Yasir. Allah has made the Gardens of Firdaws their place of hospitality—that is, their shelter and abode.”

Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be consumed before the words of my Lord are exhausted, though We were to bring the like of that to add thereto.” — up to His saying — “and he should not join any one in the service of his Lord.” Reference: Quran 18:109-110 (see full text and translation below).

99-/6817 - ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Ja‘far b. Ahmad narrated to us, from ‘Abdullah b. Musa, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. Abi Hamzah, from his father, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). I said: His saying: “Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would surely be consumed before the words of my Lord are exhausted, though We were to bring the like of that to add thereto?” He said: “I inform you that the speech of Allah has no end, no limit, and never ceases.” He said: “Then He said: Say, O Muhammad: ‘I am only a mortal like you; it is revealed to me that your God is One God; so whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.’ This association is the association of showing off (riya’).”

99-/6818 - Imam Abu Muhammad al-‘Askari (peace be upon him), from his father, ‘Ali b. Muhammad (peace be upon them), in a long narration involving a debate with a group from Quraysh, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): “Then Allah, Exalted, revealed: O Muhammad, say: ‘I am only a mortal like you’—meaning, I eat food—‘it is revealed to me that your God is One God’; meaning, say to them: ‘In humanity I am like you, but my Lord has singled me out with prophethood, unlike you, just as He singles out some humans with wealth, health, and beauty, to the exclusion of others among humans; so do not deny that He also singles me out with prophethood.’” The full narration has preceded under His saying: “And they say: We will by no means believe in you until you cause a fountain to gush forth for us from the earth.” [Quran 17:90-95]

99-/6819 - Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, from al-Husayn b. Sa‘id, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from al-Qasim b. Sulayman, from Jarrah al-Mada’ini, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work, and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” He said: “A man performs some deed seeking reward, but he does not seek thereby the Face of Allah; rather he seeks people’s commendation—he desires that people hear of it. That is the one who has associated another in the worship of his Lord.” Then he said: “No servant conceals good and the days pass ever on, except that Allah will manifest good for him; and no servant conceals evil and the days pass ever on, except that Allah will manifest evil for him.”

99-/6820 - And from him: from ‘Ali b. Muhammad b. ‘Abdillah, from Ibrahim b. Ishaq al-Ahmar, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali al-Washsha’, who said: I entered upon al-Rida (peace be upon him) and before him was a ewer; he intended to prepare for prayer. I approached him to pour (water) for him, but he refused that and said: “Enough, O Hasan.” I said: Why do you prevent me from pouring over your hand? Do you dislike that I should be rewarded? He said: “You would be rewarded, but I would be burdened with sin.” I said to him: How is that? He said: “Have you not heard Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: ‘So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord’? And here I am, performing ablution for prayer, and it is worship; so I dislike that anyone should share with me in it.”

Waddah, and Shu‘ayb al-‘Aqruqūfī—all of them—from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Exalted: “Say: I am only a mortal like you,” he said: “Meaning in creation—that he is like them, created.” “‘It is revealed to me that your God is One God; so whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.’” He said: “Let him not take, alongside the wilayah of the Family of Muhammad, the wilayah of others; and their wilayah is the righteous deed. So whoever associates anyone in the worship of his Lord has indeed associated in our wilayah, disbelieved in it, and denied the right and wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).”

99-/6823 - Al-‘Ayyashi: from Jarrah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “There is no man who performs any act of goodness, yet does not seek thereby the Face of Allah—rather he seeks people’s commendation, desiring that people hear of it—except that he has associated another in the worship of his Lord.”

99-/6824 - From al-‘Ala’ b. Fudayl, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the interpretation of this verse: “So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” He said: “Whoever prays, or fasts, or frees (a slave), or performs hajj seeking people’s praise has indeed associated in his deed; and it is a forgiven type of association.”

99-/6825 - From ‘Ali b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), he said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: I am the best of partners. Whoever associates another with Me in his deed—I will not accept it, except what is purely for Me.”

99-/6826 - And in another narration from him (peace be upon him), he said: “Allah says: I am the best of partners. Whoever acts for Me and for other than Me—then it is for the one for whom he acted, not for Me.”

99-/6827 - From Zurara and Humran, from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them), they said: “If a servant were to perform a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Abode of the Hereafter, then he mixed into it the approval of any person among the people, he would be a polytheist.”

99-/6828 - From Sama‘ah b. Mihrān, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: “Let him do righteous work and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.” He said: “The righteous work is the knowledge of the Imams; and ‘not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord’ is submission to ‘Ali (peace be upon him)—that he does not associate with him in the caliphate one for whom it is not, nor is he among its people.”
