Ar-Ra'd Ayah 14
الرعد آيه 14
أي شديد الغضب.

The Prophet sent a man to a Pharaoh among the Arab pharaohs to call him to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. The messenger of the Prophet said to him: Inform me about this to which you are calling me—is it of silver, or of gold, or of iron? He returned to the Prophet and informed him of what he had said. The Prophet said: Return to him and call him. He said: O Prophet of Allah, he is more defiant than that. He said: Return to him. So he returned to him, and he said what he had said before. While he was speaking to him, a cloud thundered a thunderclap and cast upon his head a bolt that carried off the top of his skull. Then Allah—majestic is His praise—sent down: And He sends the thunderbolts and smites with them whom He pleases, yet they dispute about Allah, and He is mighty in prowess. [Qur’an 13:13, M. H. وَ يُرْسِلُ الصَّوَاعِقَ فَيُصِيبُ بِهَا مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَ هُمْ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي اللَّهِ وَ هُوَ شَدِيدُ الْمِحَالِ
[13:13] And He sends the thunderbolts and smites with them whom He pleases, yet they dispute about Allah, and He is mighty in prowess. (M. H. Shakir)
قوله تعالى:
لَهُ دَعْوَةُ الْحَقِّ وَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ لا يَسْتَجِيبُونَ لَهُمْ بِشَيْءٍ إِلَّا كَبَاسِطِ كَفَّيْهِ إِلَى الْمَاءِ لِيَبْلُغَ فَاهُ وَ مَا هُوَ بِبَالِغِهِ وَ مَا دُعَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍ [14]
[13:14] To Him is due the true prayer; and those whom they pray to besides Him give them no answer, but (they are) like one who stretches forth his two hands towards water that it may reach his mouth, but it will not reach it; and the prayer of the unbelievers is only in error. (M. H. Shakir)

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And those whom they call upon besides Him do not answer them with anything”—this is a parable that Allah has struck for those who worship idols and those who worship gods besides Allah: they do not answer them with anything nor benefit them, just like one who stretches his two hands toward water to reach his mouth, to take it from afar, but he does not attain it.

And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying: “And the prayer of the unbelievers is only in error”—that is, in futility.

Then he said: My father narrated to me, from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr, from ‘Amr ibn Shimr, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I saw something tremendous. He said: What did you see? He said: I had a sick person, and water from a well in al-Ahqaf was described for him as a cure in Barahut, so I arrived there with a waterskin and a cup to take from its water and pour into the waterskin. Then something descended from the expanse of the sky like a chain, saying: O you, give me to drink, I will die this very hour. I lifted my head and raised the cup to him to give him drink, and there was a man with a chain around his neck. When I was about to hand him the cup, it was pulled from me until it hung from the sun. Then I turned to the water to scoop, when it came a second time saying: Thirst, thirst! O you, give me to drink, I will die this very hour. I raised the cup to give him drink, but it was pulled from me until it hung from the sun. This happened a third time, so I stood up, tightened my waterskin, and did not give him drink. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: That was Qabil, son of Adam, who killed his brother, and it is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And those whom they call upon besides Him do not answer them with anything … to His saying: ‘… except in error.’”
قوله تعالى:
وَ لِلَّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ طَوْعاً وَ كَرْهاً وَ ظِلَالُهُمْ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَ الْآصَالِ [15]
[13:15] And whoever is in the heavens and the earth makes obeisance to Allah only, willingly and unwillingly, and their shadows too at morn and eve. (M. H. Shakir)

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying: “And to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly and unwillingly, and their shadows in the mornings and evenings”—he said: “In the evening.” He said: The shadow of the believer prostrates willingly, and the shadow of the unbeliever prostrates unwillingly; and that is their growth, their movement, their increase, and their decrease.

And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly and unwillingly”—as for those from the inhabitants of the heavens who prostrate willingly, they are the angels who prostrate to Allah willingly; and as for those from the inhabitants of the earth who prostrate willingly, they are those who were born into Islam, so they prostrate to Him willingly; and as for those who prostrate to Him unwillingly, they are those who were compelled to Islam; and as for whoever did not prostrate, his shadow prostrates to Him in the morning and evening.
