40. The Healing of a Christian Youth Through the Blessing of Mourning for Imam Husain (a.s.)

A cleric who, every year, would travel from Qaramalek (Tabriz) to one of the villages in the Caucasus, arrived one year on the first day of Muḥarram to that village, just as he had done in previous years. But he saw that another cleric had already arrived there and was engaged in religious preaching.

The villagers said to him:

“You also stay here; we will provide for both of you.”

But he did not accept and decided to return. On his way back, he rented a room in a caravanserai in one of the towns, and said to himself:

“The butcher, the grocer, the cloth-seller, and the herbalist, all to whom I owe debts, are surely hoping I will return and settle my debts.”

At that very moment there was a knock at the door, and people invited him to come to their home, stay in a room there, and recite majlis (mourning sermons) for them.

This cleric noticed that only the members of that household were attending the majlis and listening to him, but no one was crying, nor showing any signs of emotion or grief.

On the night of ʿĀshūrāʾ, after finishing his sermon, the head of the household said to him:

“We are Christians. We have an eighteen-year-old son who is paralyzed. We have arranged this majlis so that he may be healed. If he recovers, we will all become Muslims.”

That cleric, the entire night until morning, sought the intercession of Lady Ṣiddiqa Ṭāhira (peace be upon her) and prayed for the healing of that youth.

Close to dawn, a loud cry of “Yā Husain!” was heard.

When he entered the young man’s room, he saw that the youth was standing on his feet, repeatedly saying “Yā Ḥusain!” All of the household fell to the cleric’s hands and feet out of immense respect and gratitude.

The cleric asked the youth what had happened. The young man said:

“A lady entered my room along with a gentleman, and they asked about my condition. I explained my illness. The lady said to the gentleman: ‘Please grant him your favor.’ Then she took my hand and said, ‘Rise!’ I replied, ‘I cannot move.’ She said, ‘Say Yā Ḥusain, and rise!’”

The young Christian said “Yā Ḥusain!” once, then stood up, and those two noble figures disappeared.

After the youth was healed, the entire tribe converted to Islam. That year and in the following years, they gave him ten times as much financial support as before, and invited him every year to their village.

He went every year during the ten days of ʿĀshūrāʾ. Two years before the communist takeover, they migrated to Tabriz and settled there, saying:

“In a dream, Imam Husain (a.s.) commanded us to leave that place and come to Tabriz.”

Two years later, the communist problem arose.

The respected scholar, Ḥujjat al-Islām wal-Muslimīn Āqāy Sayyāḥ, on Wednesday, the 21st of Dhu al-Qaʿda 1431 AH (corresponding to 25 Ṣafar 1431 AH), narrated this same story from that Qaramalaki cleric, saying:

“About twenty years ago I saw him in Mashhad, and he was about 85 years old, and he told me this story himself.”
