Al-Isra Ayah 4-6
Because he used to say, morning and evening: O Allah, whatever blessing or well-being I awaken or retire with, in religion or in this world, is from You alone, You have no partner. To You belongs praise and to You belongs thanks for it upon me, O Lord, until You are pleased and after [Your] pleasure. He would say this ten times in the morning and ten times in the evening.
99-/6246 - From Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “He was a grateful servant.” He said: When he would retire for the evening and when he would rise in the morning, he would say: “I end my day bearing witness to You that whatever blessing has come to me in religion or in this world this evening is from Allah alone, there is no partner for Him. To Him belongs much praise for it and thanks.”
99-/6247 - From Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him: What did Allah mean by His words to Noah (peace be upon him): “He was a grateful servant”? He said: They are words in which he was most earnest. And he said: When he would rise in the morning and retire in the evening he would say: “O Allah, I have awakened bearing witness to You that whatever blessing has come to me in religion or in this world this morning is from You alone, You have no partner, and to You is the thanks for it upon me, O Lord, until You are pleased and after [Your] pleasure.” Thus he was named “a grateful servant.”
His saying, exalted is He:
“And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Book: Most certainly you will make mischief in the land twice, and most certainly you will behave insolently with great insolence — to His saying — and made you a numerous band.” [Qur’an 17:4-6 — M. H. Shakir]
- 17:4: And We had made known to the children of Israel in the Book: Most certainly you will make mischief in the land twice, and most certainly you will behave insolently with great insolence.
- 17:5: So when the promise for the first of the two came, We roused against you Our servants, men of great might, then they went to and fro among the houses, and it was a promise completely fulfilled.
- 17:6: Then We gave you back the turn to prevail against them, and aided you with wealth and children and made you a numerous band.

Shammūn, from ‘Abd Allāh b. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Aṣamm, from ‘Abd Allāh b. al-Qāsim al-Baṭal, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, exalted is He: “And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Book: Most certainly you will make mischief in the land twice.” He said: “The killing of ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), and the stabbing of al-Ḥasan (peace be upon him). ‘And most certainly you will behave insolently with great insolence’ — he said: the killing of al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him). ‘So when the promise for the first of the two came’ — when the victory for the blood of al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) comes — ‘We roused against you Our servants, men of great might, then they went to and fro among the houses’ — a people whom Allah will raise up before the emergence of the Qā’im (peace be upon him), and they will not leave any offender against the family of Muḥammad without killing him. ‘And it was a promise completely fulfilled’ — the rise of the Qā’im (peace be upon him). ‘Then We gave you back the turn to prevail against them’ — the coming forth of al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) with seventy of his companions; upon them are gilded helmets, each helmet having two faces. They will convey to the people: ‘This is al-Ḥusayn who has come forth,’ so that the believers will have no doubt about him, and that he is not a deceiver nor a devil, while the Proof, the Qā’im, is among them. When knowledge settles in the hearts of the believers that he is al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him), death will come to the Proof. The one who will wash him, shroud him, embalm him, and place him in his grave will be al-Ḥusayn b. ‘Alī (peace be upon them), for none attends to the trustee (waṣī) except a trustee.”

99-/6262 - ... “Indeed, ‘Alī (peace be upon him) has a return on earth together with his son al-Ḥusayn (blessings be upon them) ... then another return with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) until he will be a caliph on earth and the Imams (peace be upon them) will be his governors, until Allah [is worshiped openly] and worship will be openly in the earth.” Then he said: “Yes, by Allah — and more than that,” and he folded his hand, “many times over. Allah will give His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) the dominion of all the people of the world from the day Allah created the world until the day He ends it, until He fulfills for him His promise in His Book as He said: ‘that He may make it prevail over all religion, though the polytheists may be averse.’” [Qur’an 9:33; 61:9 — M. H. Shakir]

99-/6265 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: Regarding His saying, exalted is He: “So when the second promise came (We raised another people) that they may bring you to grief and that they may enter the mosque as they entered it the first time, and that they might destroy whatever they gained ascendancy over with utter destruction,” it means the Qā’im (peace be upon him) and his companions — that they will blacken your faces; “and that they may enter the mosque as they entered it the first time” — meaning the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and his companions, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and his companions; “and that they might destroy whatever they gained ascendancy over with utter destruction” — that is, they will rise over you and kill you. Then He turned to the family of Muḥammad (peace be upon him and them) and said: “It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you” — that is, He will grant you victory over [them]. [Qur’an 17:7-8 — M. H. Shakir]
- 17:7: If you do good, you do good for your own souls; and if you do evil, it is for them. So when the second promise came (We raised another people) that they may bring you to grief and that they may enter the mosque as they entered it the first time, and that they might destroy whatever they gained ascendancy over with utter destruction.
- 17:8: It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you, and if you again return (to mischief), We too will return (to punishment), and We have made hell a prison for the unbelievers.
