The fact that Imam Husain (a.s.) is the Cause of the Sorrow of the Believers
The fact that Imam Husain (a.s.) is the Cause of the Sorrow of the Believers
As a conclusion, what has been mentioned thus far is only a glimpse of the praises and virtues of that noble master, which have been presented.
But where do I have the ability to enumerate the virtues of one regarding whom the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said—after mentioning many of his merits:
“Give him precedence and honor, just as Allah has honored and given him precedence.” [216]
However, we shall mention one unique virtue which encompasses all the apparently opposite qualities of that noble Imam (a.s.), those which are both causes of sorrow and causes of joy, and which are sources of both grief and happiness.
The explanation of this astonishing matter is that since Imam Husain (a.s.) was the cause of the sorrow of the believers from the beginning of creation until the Day of Resurrection, because of the reasons already mentioned and those yet to be mentioned—and indeed he became the cause of sorrow even in realms where sorrow and grief had not been decreed—therefore Allah made him the cause of the joy and happiness of the believers.
This was done by creating all the gardens of Paradise and the ḥūr al-ʿayn from the pure light of that noble Imam (a.s.), even though Paradise and the ḥūr al-ʿayn are themselves the abode of joy and delight. [217]
As it is narrated from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said:
“Allah created me, Ali (a.s.), Fatimah (a.s.), Hasan (a.s.), and Imam Husain (a.s.) before He created Adam, at a time when there was neither heaven nor earth, neither darkness nor light, neither sun nor moon, neither Paradise nor Hell.”
Al-ʿAbbas asked:
“How did your creation begin?”
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:
“O uncle! When Allah desired to create us, He spoke a word, and from it He created a light. Then He spoke another word, and from it He created the spirit. Then He combined the light with the spirit, and from that He created the five of us.
We glorified and sanctified Him at a time when there was none to glorify or sanctify Him.
Then, when He desired to bring creation into existence, He split my light and created the Throne from it.
Thus the Throne is from my light, and my light is from the light of Allah, and my light is superior to the light of the Throne.
Then He split the light of my brother Ali (a.s.) and created the angels from it.
Thus Ali (a.s.) is superior to the angels.
Then He split the light of my daughter Fatimah (a.s.) and created the heavens and the earth from it.
Thus the heavens and the earth are from the light of my daughter Fatimah (a.s.), and the light of my daughter is from the light of Allah, and my daughter is superior to the heavens and the earth.
Then He split the light of my son Hasan (a.s.) and created the sun and the moon from it.
Thus Hasan (a.s.) is superior to the sun and the moon.
Then He split the light of my son Imam Husain (a.s.) and created Paradise and the ḥūr al-ʿayn from it.
Thus Imam Husain (a.s.) is superior to Paradise and the ḥūr al-ʿayn.” [218]
End of the noble narration.
Therefore, Imam Husain (a.s.) is the sorrow of every believer, and he will also be the cause of their joy.
What is even more astonishing is that this noble Imam (a.s.) became the cause of the sorrow of Paradise and the ḥūr al-ʿayn, although they themselves are among the causes of joy.
As has been narrated in reports, Paradise wept over him when he lay upon the dust, and the ḥūr al-ʿayn struck their faces in grief, and mourning was established in the highest heavens. [219]
More astonishing still is that although Imam Husain (a.s.) became the cause of sorrow for Paradise, he also became the cause of its joy.
For it is narrated in a report that Paradise asked Allah to adorn it.
Allah then adorned its pillars with Imam Husain (a.s.).
Thereupon Paradise became proud of its beauty and rejoiced, just as brides rejoice from the intensity of their happiness. [220]
