Qur’an 20:1-3 (M. H. Shakir): Ta Ha. We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unhappy. Nay, it is a reminder to him who fears.

99-/6967 _6- Al-Tabrisi in al-Ihtijaj: from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). A Jew questioned him and said to him: “As for David (peace be upon him), he wept over his sin until the mountains moved with him out of fear.” ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said to him: “That was indeed so, but Muhammad (blessings be upon him and his family) was given what is superior to that. When he stood for prayer, a sound from his chest was heard like the bubbling of a cooking pot on the three stones, due to the intensity of his weeping, even though Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had secured him from His punishment. He wished, by his weeping, to humble himself to his Lord and to be an imam for whoever takes him as an example. Indeed, he stood on the tips of his toes for ten years until his feet swelled and his face turned pale. He would stand the entire night, until he was reproached for that, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Ta Ha. We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unhappy, but so that you may be made happy by it’ (cf. Qur’an 20:1-3, M. H. Shakir). He would weep until he fainted. It was said to him: ‘O Messenger of Allah, has not Allah, Mighty and Majestic, forgiven you what preceded of your fault and what followed?’ He said: ‘Indeed—shall I not be a grateful servant?’”
99-/6968 _7- Al-Tabrisi: It is narrated that the Prophet (blessings be upon him and his family) would raise one of his feet in the prayer to increase his exertion, so Allah, the Exalted, revealed: “Ta Ha. We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unhappy” (Qur’an 20:1-2, M. H. Shakir), so he put it down. He said: And this is narrated from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him).

99-/6969 _8- The Shaykh in his Amali: from al-Haffar, who said: ‘Ali b. Ahmad al-Hulwani narrated to us, who said: Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Muqri’ narrated to us, who said: al-Fadl b. Hubab al-Jumahi narrated to us, who said: Muslim b. Ibrahim narrated to us, from Aban, from Qatadah, from Abu al-‘Aliyah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: We were sitting with the Prophet (blessings be upon him and his family) when the Trustworthy—Gabriel (peace be upon him)—descended to him with a cup of red crystal, filled with musk and ambergris. Next to the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) were ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and his two sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn (peace be upon them). He (Gabriel) said to him: “Peace be upon you. Allah conveys peace to you and greets you with this greeting, and He commands you to greet ‘Ali and his two sons with it.” Ibn ‘Abbas said: When it came into the hand of the Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family), he declared “la ilaha illa Allah” three times and magnified (Allahu akbar) three times. Then it (the cup) spoke with a fluent and eloquent tongue, saying: “In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Ta Ha. We have not revealed the Quran to you that you may be unhappy” (Qur’an 20:1-2, M. H. Shakir). The Prophet smelled it and conveyed the greeting with it to ‘Ali (peace be upon him). When it came into the hand of ‘Ali (peace be upon him), it said: “In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ‘Only Allah is your guardian and His Messenger and those who believe, those who keep up prayers and pay the poor-rate while they bow’” (Qur’an 5:55, M. H. Shakir). ‘Ali (peace be upon him) smelled it and conveyed the greeting with it to al-Hasan (peace be upon him). When it came into the hand of al-Hasan (peace be upon him), it said: “In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ‘Of what do they ask one another? Of the Great News, About which they differ’” (Qur’an 78:1-3, M. H. Shakir). Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) smelled it and conveyed the greeting with it to al-Husayn (peace be upon him). When it came into the hand of al-Husayn (peace be upon him), it said: “In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ‘Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives; and whoever earns good, We give him more of good therein; surely Allah is Forgiving, Grateful’” (Qur’an 42:23, M. H. Shakir). Then it was returned to the Prophet (blessings be upon him and his family), and it said: “In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. ‘Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth’” (Qur’an 24:35, M. H. Shakir). Ibn ‘Abbas said: I do not know whether it ascended to the heaven or disappeared into the earth by the power of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
