99-/768 _10- Muhammad ibn Muslim narrated: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “Do not follow the footsteps of Satan — he said — every oath sworn by other than Allah is among the footsteps of Satan.”

Quran 2:170 (M. H. Shakir): And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! and though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way.

Quran 2:171 (M. H. Shakir): And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who calls out to that which hears no other than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they do not understand.

99-/769 _1- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Abu ‘Abdillah al-Ash‘ari, from some of our companions, [with an elevated chain], from Hisham ibn al-Hakam, who said: Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: “O Hisham, indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, gave glad tidings to the people of intellect and understanding in His Book, saying: ‘So give good news to My servants — those who listen to the word’ [the verse].”

And he mentioned the hadith at length until he said: “And He censured those who do not use their intellect, saying: ‘And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! and though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way. And He said: And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who calls out to that which hears no other than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb, blind, so they do not understand.’”

99-/770 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying, “And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who calls out to that which hears no other than a call and a cry...” said: Indeed, when livestock are shouted at by their owner, they hear the sound but do not know what he wants. Likewise, the disbelievers — when it is recited to them and faith is presented to them — do not understand, like the livestock.

Quran 2:173 (M. H. Shakir): But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

99-/771 _1- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad, from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from al-Washsha’, from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s words: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit.” He said: “The baghi is the seeker of game, and the ‘adi is the thief. Neither of them is permitted to eat carrion even if they are compelled to it; it is forbidden for them. It is not for them as it is for the Muslims. Nor is it permitted for them to shorten the prayer.”

99-/772 _2- Ibn Babawayh: from his father, who said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Bazanti, from someone he mentioned, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s words: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit.” He said: “The baghi is the one who rebels against the Imam, and the ‘adi is the one who cuts off the road; carrion is not lawful for either of them.” And it is narrated that the ‘adi is the thief, and the baghi is the one who seeks game; it is not permissible for them to shorten the prayer during travel nor to eat carrion in a state of compulsion.

99-/773 _3- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Muhammad ibn Isma‘il, raised (the chain) to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit.” He said: “The baghi is the oppressor, and the ‘adi is the usurper.”

99-/774 _4- From Abu Basir, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “The one in dire necessity must not drink wine, for it only increases him in evil; if he drinks it, it will kill him. So let him not drink even a single drop of it.”

99-/775 _5- From Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding a woman or a man who loses eyesight, and the physicians come to him and say: “We will treat you for a month or forty nights lying on your back — should he pray like that?” I returned to him for this [matter], and he said: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit.”

99-/776 _6- From Hammad ibn ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit,” he said: “The baghi is the one who rebels against the Imam, and the ‘adi is the thief.”

99-/777 _7- From one of our companions, who said: A woman came to ‘Umar and said, “O Commander of the Faithful, I have committed fornication; carry out the prescribed punishment on me.” He ordered that she be stoned, and ‘Ali, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), was present. He said to him: “Ask her how she committed fornication.” She said: “I was in a wilderness, and I was seized by severe thirst. A tent appeared to me, so I went to it and found a Bedouin man in it. I asked him for water, but he refused me unless I let him have his way with me. I turned away from him fleeing, but my thirst intensified until my eyes sank and my tongue failed. When it reached that point with me, I went to him; he gave me water to drink and had intercourse with me.” ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said to him: “This is the one of whom Allah said: ‘But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring nor exceeding the limit — then there is no sin upon him’; and she is neither a willing fornicator nor an aggressor. So let her go.” ‘Umar said: “Were it not for ‘Ali, ‘Umar would have perished.”

99-/778 _8- From Hammad ibn ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah, regarding His saying: “But whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit.” He said: “The baghi is one who seeks game, and the ‘adi is the thief. Neither is permitted to shorten the prayer, nor — if they are compelled to carrion — to eat it. What is permitted to people in necessity is not permitted to them.”

99-/779 _9- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi: from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them): “[Not desiring] means: not rebelling against the Imam of the Muslims; and [nor exceeding the limit] means: not transgressing, by sin, the path of those upon the truth.”
