Farewell, Now I Too Am Going - Chapter of Yaʿqūb (a.s.)

Farewell, Now I Too Am Going - Chapter of Yaʿqūb (a.s.)

In the ziyārah of Imam Husain (a.s.) it is said:

“Peace be upon Yaʿqūb.”

If you wish, intend Yaʿqūb ibn Isḥāq (a.s.), who had twelve sons, all of whom were healthy and safe and standing in his service. Then one day they said to him:

“O father, a wolf has devoured one of us.”

As a result, his back became bent and his eyes turned white from the intensity of grief.

Or intend the Yaʿqūb of Karbalāʾ, who had one son, and heard his voice saying:

“O father, farewell! Now I too am going.” [1375]

If you wish, intend Yaʿqūb (a.s.), who saw the shirt of Yūsuf (a.s.) stained with blood, yet not torn, and said:

“What a gentle wolf this must have been!” [1376]

Or intend this Yaʿqūb, who saw his son torn into pieces, with no part of his clothing and no part of his body remaining unharmed.

They asked Yaʿqūb (a.s.) to allow Yūsuf (a.s.) to go with them so that he might enjoy himself and play in the open country. But he refused and said:

“I cannot bear separation from him.”

And when the son of Imam Husain (a.s.), ʿAlī al-Akbar (a.s.), set out, the women tried to prevent him. Imam Husain (a.s.) said:

“Leave him, for he longs to meet his grandfather.” [1377]

For Yaʿqūb (a.s.), a bearer of glad tidings came and cast the shirt of Yūsuf (a.s.) before him, whereupon his eyesight was restored.

And Imam Husain (a.s.) heard the cry of his son, and then the light of his eyes was completely extinguished.

Yūsuf (a.s.) Before the ʿAzīz of Egypt and Imam Husain (a.s.) Before Yazīd

Chapter of Yūsuf (a.s.):

When Yūsuf (a.s.) was separated from his father, some said:

“Let us kill him.”

Another said:

“Do not kill him; rather, throw him into the well.”

In the end, their opinion settled upon throwing him into the well.

As for Imam Husain (a.s.), after they had killed his companions, his sons, and his brothers, and after they had inflicted upon him many wounds from arrows, spears, and swords—wounds that were sufficient in themselves, indeed some of them alone were enough to cause death, and even a single one of those arrows would have sufficed—they still were not satisfied.

Rather, they cried out:

“Kill him! May your mothers mourn you if you do not!”

Then a group charged forward to kill that already-slain one and to slaughter him in a manner that the pen is unable to describe. [1378]

After Yūsuf (a.s.) had fallen into the well, a caravan brought him out. They took him captive, then purchased him and brought him to the market of Egypt to be sold.

As for Imam Husain (a.s.), after they cast him upon the ground, they severed his head, raised it upon a spear, and carried it through the streets of Kūfah and Syria. [1379]

Yūsuf (a.s.) was taken by force before the ʿAzīz of Egypt, and eventually he became honoured and trusted in the presence of the king.

And Imam Husain (a.s.) was brought before Yazīd. Then Yazīd mocked him and rejoiced over his condition, and with a stick he pointed toward his blessed teeth. [1380]
