An-Nahl Ayah 52-62
It means by this: “Do not take two leaders; there is only one Imam.”
And whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His, and to Him is (due) obedience constantly; will you then fear any other than Allah? And whatever favor is (bestowed) on you, it is from Allah; then when evil afflicts you, to Him do you cry for aid. Then when He removes the evil from you, lo! a party of you associate (others) with their Lord, So as to deny what We have given them; then enjoy yourselves, for you shall soon know. And they set apart for what they do not know a portion out of what We have given them; by Allah, you shall most certainly be questioned about that which you forged. And they ascribe daughters to Allah; glory be to Him; and for themselves (they would have) what they desire. And when a daughter is announced to one of them his face becomes dark, and he is full of wrath. He hides himself from the people because of the evil of that which is announced to him. Shall he keep it with disgrace or bury it (alive) in the dust? Now surely evil is what they judge. For those who do not believe in the hereafter is an evil attribute, and Allah’s is the loftiest attribute; and He is the Mighty, the Wise. And if Allah had destroyed men for their iniquity, He would not leave on the earth a single creature, but He respites them to an appointed term; so when their doom comes they shall not postpone (it) an hour, nor can they bring it (forward). And they assign to Allah what they (themselves) dislike, and their tongues relate the lie that they shall have the good; there is no doubt that they shall have the fire, and that they shall be sent forward. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6059) Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Samā‘ah, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about Allah’s words: “And to Him is (due) obedience constantly (dīnun wāsiban).” He said: “It means: obligatory.”
And whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His, and to Him is (due) obedience constantly; will you then fear any other than Allah? (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6060) ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, regarding His words: “And whatever is in the heavens and the earth is His, and to Him is (due) obedience constantly”—that is: obligatory. Then He mentioned His favor [1], saying: “And whatever favor is on you, it is from Allah; then when evil touches you, to Him you cry out,” meaning you take fright and turn back. The favor is health, abundance, and well-being. “Then when He removes the evil from you, lo, a party of you associate (others) with their Lord; so as to deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves—you shall soon know.” He said: And His words: “And they set apart for what they do not know a portion out of what We have provided them”—these are those we described, namely what the Arabs used to apportion to idols from their crops, camels, and sheep. So Allah refuted them, saying: “By Allah, you shall certainly be questioned about that which you used to forge. And they ascribe daughters to Allah—glory be to Him—while for themselves is what they desire.”
(M. H. Shakir)
And they set apart for what they do not know a portion out of what We have given them; by Allah, you shall most certainly be questioned about that which you forged. And they ascribe daughters to Allah; glory be to Him; and for themselves (they would have) what they desire. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6061) And from him: Quraysh said, “The angels are the daughters of Allah.” Thus they attributed to Allah what they themselves do not desire. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And they ascribe daughters to Allah—glory be to Him—while for themselves is what they desire,” meaning sons. Then He said: “And when a daughter is announced to one of them, his face becomes dark and he is full of grief; he hides himself from the people because of the evil of that which is announced to him: Shall he keep it with disgrace or bury it in the dust? Behold, evil is what they judge.” Then Allah refuted them, saying: “For those who do not believe in the hereafter is an evil attribute, and Allah’s is the loftiest attribute; and He is the Mighty, the Wise.”
(M. H. Shakir)
99-/6062) Ibn Bābawayh: He said: ‘Alī b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ‘Imrān al-Daqqāq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad b. Abī ‘Abdillāh al-Kūfī narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad b. Ismā‘īl al-Barmakī narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan narrated to us; he said: my father narrated to me, from Ḥanān b. Sadīr, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about the Throne (‘Arsh) and the Footstool (Kursī)—and he mentioned the ḥadīth—until he said: “And to Allah belongs the loftiest attribute (al-mathal al-a‘lā), which nothing resembles, which cannot be described, nor conceived—such is the loftiest attribute.” And the ḥadīth is long; it will come in full—God willing—under His words: “He is the Lord of the mighty Throne” in Sūrat al-Naml [1].
And Allah’s is the loftiest attribute; and He is the Mighty, the Wise. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6063) ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: He said: Ḥumayd b. Ziyād narrated to us, from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, from Ṭalḥah b. Zayd, from Ja‘far b. Muḥammad, from his father (peace be upon them), in the ḥadīth of the exegesis of His words: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth; the parable of His light is as a niche in which is a lamp—the lamp...” to the end of the verse. And at the end of the ḥadīth I said to Ja‘far b. Muḥammad: “May I be your ransom, my master! They say: ‘the parable of the Lord’s light’?” He said: “Glory be to Allah! There is no likeness for Allah. Allah said: ‘Therefore do not set up similitudes for Allah’” [3].
Therefore do not set up similitudes for Allah; surely Allah knows and you do not know. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6064) ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, said regarding His words: “And if Allah were to call men to account for their wrongdoing”—that is, when they disobey and commit injustice—“He would not leave on it a single creature; but He postpones them to an appointed term; then when their term comes, they shall not postpone it an hour, nor can they advance it.”
And if Allah had destroyed men for their iniquity, He would not leave on the earth a single creature, but He respites them to an appointed term; so when their doom comes they shall not postpone (it) an hour, nor can they bring it (forward). (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6065) Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Ḥumrān, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): “The term that is decreed on the Night of Decree is the term Allah referred to: ‘Then when their term comes, they shall not postpone it an hour nor can they advance it.’” And a ḥadīth from Ḥumrān, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding the meaning of “term” has already passed, under His words: “He has decreed a term, and a term named with Him” in Sūrat al-An‘ām [4].
And they assign to Allah what they (themselves) dislike, and their tongues relate the lie that they shall have the good; there is no doubt that they shall have the fire, and that they shall be sent forward. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6066) And ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said regarding His words: “And they assign to Allah what they (themselves) dislike, and their tongues utter the lie,” meaning: their lying tongues say, “That the best reward is for us.” “No indeed—surely for them is the Fire, and indeed they shall be sent forward,” that is: punished.
And We have not revealed to you the Book except that you may make clear to them that in which they differ, and (as) a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6067) Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Anas b. Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said to me: “O Anas, pour out water for my wuḍū’.”
