Translation: They were alive, looking at one another, glorifying Allah, Mighty and Majestic, magnifying Him, and proclaiming His oneness. Hizqeel then said: I bear witness that Allah has power over all things. Umar ibn Yazid said: Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: About them was this verse revealed.

Translation: 99-/1342) Al-‘Ayyashi: From Humran ibn A‘yan, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him: Tell me about the saying of Allah: Have you not considered those who went forth from their homes, for fear of death, and they were thousands; then Allah said to them, Die; again He gave them life. [al-Baqara 2:243, M. H. Shakir] He said: Did He give them life so that people looked at them, and then He caused them to die that very day? Or did He return them to the world until they inhabited the houses, ate food, and married women? He said: Rather, Allah returned them until they inhabited the houses, ate food, and married women, and they remained thus as long as Allah willed; then they died at their appointed terms. And this hadith was narrated by Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdillah, with his chain from Humran, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) [1].

Translation: 99-/1343) Al-Tabrisi in (al-Ihtijaj), in a hadith from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), said: Allah gave life to a people who had left their homelands fleeing from the plague, their number beyond counting. Allah caused them to die for a long age until their bones decayed, their joints disintegrated, and they became dust. Then Allah—at a time when He wished to show His creation His power—sent a prophet called Hizqeel. He called them, and their bodies reassembled, their souls returned into them, and they stood as on the very day they had died, not a single man missing from their number. They then lived for a long age thereafter.

Translation: [al-Baqara 2:245, M. H. Shakir] Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan, so that He may multiply it to him many times? And Allah straitens and amplifies, and to Him you shall be returned.

Translation: 99-/1344) Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: From several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Washsha’, from ‘Isa ibn Sulayman al-Nahhas, from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar, from al-Khaybari and Yunus ibn Zabyan, who said: We heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: There is nothing more beloved to Allah than giving dirhams to the Imam; indeed, Allah makes for him, in Paradise, a single dirham like Mount Uhud. Then he said: Verily Allah, Exalted, says in His Book: Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan, so that He may multiply it to him many times? [al-Baqara 2:245, M. H. Shakir] He said: By Allah, it is in maintaining the ties with the Imam.

Translation: 99-/1345) Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Mutawakkil (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-‘Attar narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa, from Abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: When this verse was revealed to the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): Whoever brings a good deed, he shall have better than it [al-Naml 27:89; al-Qasas 28:84, M. H. Shakir], the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: O Allah, increase me! Then Allah, Exalted, revealed to him: Whoever brings a good deed, he shall have ten times its like [al-An‘am 6:160, M. H. Shakir]. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: O Allah, increase me! Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan, so that He may multiply it to him many times? [al-Baqara 2:245, M. H. Shakir] So the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) understood that “many” from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, cannot be counted and has no limit.

Translation: 99-/1348) From Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn Ziyad, who said: I was in the bureau of Ibn ‘Abbad and saw a letter being copied. I asked about it, and they said: It is the letter of al-Rida to his son (peace be upon them) from Khurasan. I asked them to hand it to me, and it contained: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. May Allah keep you long, and protect you from your enemy—O my son, may your father be your ransom. I have apportioned [5] my property for you while I am alive and sound, hoping that Allah will cause you to grow [6] through giving to your kin and to the clients of Musa and Ja‘far (may Allah be pleased with them both). As for Sa‘idah [7], she is a woman decisive in grants and accurate in fine discernment [8], and it is not so. Allah said: Who is it that will lend to Allah a goodly loan, so that He may multiply it to him many times? [al-Baqara 2:245, M. H. Shakir]

Translation: And He said: Let him who has abundance spend out of his abundance, and whoever is straitened in his means, let him spend out of what Allah has given him [al-Talaq 65:7, M. H. Shakir]. And Allah has indeed greatly expanded for you—O my son, may your father be your ransom—do not conceal matters from me out of fondness for them [2], lest you miss your portion. And peace.
