S 56 Ayat 39 to 55

[Surah Al-Waqi'ah (56): 39–55, Translation by M. H. Shakir]

56:39 A numerous company from among the first, 56:40 And a numerous company from among the last. 56:41 And those on the left hand; how wretched are those on the left hand! 56:42 In hot wind and boiling water, 56:43 And shadow of black smoke, 56:44 Neither cool nor honorable. 56:45 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 56:46 And they persisted in the great violation. 56:47 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 56:48 Or our fathers of yore? 56:49 Say: The first and the last, 56:50 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 56:51 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 56:52 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 56:53 And fill (your) bellies with it; 56:54 Then drink over it of boiling water; 56:55 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel.

“A multitude from among the first, and a multitude from among the last.” (al-Wāqiʿah, 56:39–40)

99-/10423 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb: From Muhammad ibn Yaḥyā, from one of his companions, from ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Īsā, from a Shaykh from the people of Madinah, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) about a man who drinks water and does not pause his breath until he is quenched.

He (peace be upon him) said: “Isn’t that the very essence of pleasure?”

I said: But they say that is shurb al-hīm (the drink of the thirsty camels). He (peace be upon him) said: “They have lied! Shurb al-hīm is that over which the name of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has not been mentioned.”

It was said to him: A man drinks in a single breath— He (peace be upon him) said: “There is no problem with that.”

I said: But those before us say that is shurb al-hīm (the drink of the thirsty camels). He (peace be upon him) replied: “Indeed, shurb al-hīm is only that over which the name of Allah is not mentioned.”

I asked Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) about a man who drinks without stopping until he is satisfied.

He (peace be upon him) said: “And is pleasure anything other than that?”

I said: But they say that this is shurb al-hīm (the drink of the thirsty camels). He (peace be upon him) replied: “They lie. Shurb al-hīm is only that over which the name of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is not mentioned.”
