Fifth - The View of Ahl al-Bayt (as) on Predestination (Jabr) and Delegation (Tafwīḍ)
Fifth — The View of Ahl al-Bayt (as) on Predestination (Jabr) and Delegation (Tafwīḍ):
The Ahl al-Bayt (as) adopted a middle path between jabr (absolute predestination) and tafwīḍ (absolute delegation of will), a path that connects neither to coercion nor to abandonment of divine will. They named this principle: "al-amr bayna al-amrayn" — the matter between two matters.
It is narrated from al-Mufaḍḍal ibn ʿUmar, from Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ṣādiq (as), who said: “There is no predestination (jabr) and no delegation (tafwīḍ), but rather a matter between two matters.”
I said: “And what is the matter between the two matters?”
He said: “It is like a man whom you saw committing a sin, so you forbade him but he did not refrain. Then you left him and he committed the sin. So, just because he did not heed your warning and you left him, does it mean you are the one who commanded him to commit the sin?”

It is narrated from Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir and Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon them) that they both said: “Indeed, Allāh, Mighty and Majestic, is too merciful toward His creation to compel them to commit sins and then punish them for it. And Allāh is too mighty to will something and it does not occur.”
They were asked: “Is there a third position between predestination (jabr) and absolute delegation (tafwīḍ)?”
They said: “Yes, a position broader than the distance between the heavens and the earth.”
And based on this conscious and insightful approach, they interpreted the verses of the Qur’ān and absolved the speech of Allāh, the Exalted, from any association with coercion (jabr) or abandonment (tafwīḍ).
It is narrated from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Harawī who said: I heard Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Mūsā ibn Jaʿfar (peace be upon them) say:
“Whoever believes in predestination (jabr), do not give him zakāt, nor accept his testimony. Surely Allāh, Blessed and Exalted, does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, nor does He task it with more than it can bear. Every soul earns only against itself, and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another.”

“Allah does not impose upon any soul a duty but to the extent of its ability…” (2:286) “And every soul earns not (blame) except against itself, and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another…” (6:164)
