S 44 Ayat 10 - 28

"Therefore, watch for the day when the heaven shall bring a clear smoke." (Surah Al-Dukhān 44:10)

Up to His words: "And We gave them as a heritage to another people." (Surah Al-Dukhān 44:28)

99-/9696

Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding the words of Allah, the Exalted:

"Therefore, watch for the day when the heaven shall bring a clear smoke." (Surah Al-Dukhān 44:10)

He said: "That will be when they emerge in the return (al-rajʿah) from the grave."

99-/9697 Ibn Shahr Ashub: It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: “O Allah, curse Ri’l and Dhakwan. O Allah, intensify Your punishment upon Mudar. O Allah, make their years like the years of Yusuf.”

So it is mentioned in the report that a man among them would meet his companion, but he would not be able to approach him. If he came near him, he would not be able to see him due to the severity of the smoke of hunger. Provisions would be brought to them from every direction, but when they purchased them and took possession of them, they would not reach their homes before they became infested and rotten. They ate dead dogs, carrion, and skins, exhumed graves, burned the bones of the dead, and ate them. A woman ate her own child. The smoke accumulated between the sky and the earth.

And that is the saying of the Most High: “Then watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke, covering the people; this is a painful chastisement.” (Quran 44:10-11, M.H. Shakir)

Abu Sufyan and the leaders of Quraysh said: "O Muhammad, do you command us to maintain family ties? Then help your people, for they have perished." So he prayed for them.

And that is the saying of the Most High: “Our Lord! Remove from us the chastisement; surely we are believers.” (Quran 44:12, M.H. Shakir)

So Allah, the Most High, said: “Surely We will remove the chastisement a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil).” (Quran 44:15, M.H. Shakir)

Then prosperity and ease returned to them. And that is the saying of the Most High: “So let them serve the Lord of this House, Who feeds them against hunger and gives them security against fear.” (Quran 106:3-4, M.H. Shakir)

9698 _3 We return to the narration of Ali ibn Ibrahim: “Covering the people; this is a painful chastisement.” (Quran 44:11, M.H. Shakir)

Darkness will envelop all people, and they will say: “Our Lord! Remove from us the chastisement; surely we are believers.” (Quran 44:12, M.H. Shakir)

Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, responded to them: “How shall they be reminded, and there came to them a clear apostle?” (Quran 44:13, M.H. Shakir)

That is, a messenger had come to them clearly, yet “Then they turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman.” (Quran 44:14, M.H. Shakir)

It is said that they uttered this when revelation descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his progeny), and he experienced a trance. They said, "He is mad."

Then He said: “Surely We will remove the chastisement a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil).” (Quran 44:15, M.H. Shakir)

This means until the Day of Judgment. Had His saying—“Then watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke” (Quran 44:10, M.H. Shakir)—referred to the Resurrection, He would not have said: “(But) you will surely return (to evil),” because after the Hereafter and Resurrection, there is no state to which they would return.

Then He said: “On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution.” (Quran 44:16, M.H. Shakir)

That is, on the Day of Resurrection.

“And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (saying): Deliver to me the servants of Allah.” (Quran 44:17-18, M.H. Shakir)

Meaning, what Allah has obligated of prayer, zakat, fasting, hajj, the traditions, and rulings. Then Allah revealed to him:

“So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued. And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned.” (Quran 44:23-24, M.H. Shakir)

Meaning, leave the sea as it is and take the path, for Pharaoh and his soldiers will follow you.

His saying, “And a goodly dwelling-place.” (Quran 44:26, M.H. Shakir)

That is, a pleasant place, “And bounty that they enjoyed.” (Quran 44:27, M.H. Shakir)

It is said that the bounty refers to their well-being. His saying: “That is how; and We gave them as a heritage to another people.” (Quran 44:28, M.H. Shakir)

Meaning, the Children of Israel.
