S 2 A 170-171
99-/768 _10- Muhammad ibn Muslim said: I heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: Do not follow the footsteps of Satan—he said—every oath sworn by other than Allah is among the footsteps of Satan.
Translation (M. H. Shakir, 2:170): And when it is said to them: Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way.
Translation (M. H. Shakir, 2:171): And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who shouts to that which hears no more than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they do not understand.
99-/769 _1- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Abu ‘Abdillah al-Ash‘ari, from some of our companions, [with a raised chain] [1], from Hisham ibn al-Hakam, who said: Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to me: O Hisham, indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, gave glad tidings to the people of intellect and understanding in His Book, so He said: So give good news to My servants, those who listen to the word [2], the verse. And he mentioned the hadith at length until he said: And He condemned [3] those who do not reason; so He said: And when it is said to them: Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way. And He said: And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who shouts to that which hears no more than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they do not understand.
99-/770 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying, And the parable of those who disbelieve is as that of one who shouts to that which hears: He said: Indeed, when the beasts are driven off by their owner, they hear the sound but do not know what he wants; likewise, the unbelievers—when faith is recited to them and presented to them, they do not comprehend, like the beasts.
Translation (M. H. Shakir, 2:173): He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other name than that of Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, then no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
