99-/7187 -5- Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And Dhā al-Nūn when he went off in anger,” meaning from the deeds of his people: “and he thought that We would not straiten him” — he says: he thought he would not be punished for what [1] he did.

Qur’an 21:87-88 (M. H. Shakir): And Yunus, when he went away in wrath, and he thought that We would not straiten him, so he called out among afflictions: There is no god but Thou, glory be to Thee; surely I am of those who make themselves to suffer loss. So We responded to him and delivered him from the grief, and thus do We deliver the believers.

99-/7188 -6- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb: from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-‘Āṣimī, from ‘Alī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Taymulī, from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthmān, from Abī Jamīlah, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: A man from Khurāsān said to him at al-Rabadhah: May I be your ransom, I have not been granted a child. He said to him: “When you return to your land and intend to go to your family, then recite when you intend that: ‘And Dhā al-Nūn when he went off in anger …’ up to three verses; you will be granted a child, God Most High willing.”

Qur’an 21:87-89 (M. And Zakariya when he cried to his Lord: My Lord! leave me not alone; and Thou art the best of inheritors.

99-/7189 -1- His saying, exalted is He: “And Zakariya when he called upon his Lord … and they called on Us in yearning and awe” [89-90]. And in the narration of ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm regarding His saying: “And Zakariya when he called upon his Lord: My Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors. So We responded to him and granted him Yaḥyā, and We made sound for him his wife,” he said: She did not menstruate, then she menstruated.

Qur’an 21:89-90 (M. H. Shakir): And Zakariya when he cried to his Lord: My Lord! leave me not alone; and Thou art the best of inheritors. So We responded to him and granted him Yahya and made his wife right for him; surely they used to hasten, one with another, in deeds of goodness and to call upon Us, hoping and fearing, and they were humble before Us.

99-/7190 -2- Ibn Bābawayh in his Amālī said: Ahmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Sa‘īd ibn Abī Shaḥmah narrated to us, he said: Abū Muḥammad ‘Abd Allāh ibn Hāshim [2] al-Qunānī al-Baghdādī [3] narrated to us, he said: Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, he said: Ḥassān ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us, he said: ‘Abd Allāh ibn Lahī‘ah narrated to us, from Abī Qubayl, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, who said: The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his Household) said: “Among the asceticism of Yaḥyā son of Zakariyyā (peace be upon them both) is that he came to Bayt al-Maqdis and looked at the devoted among the scholars and monks, wearing hair-shirts and woolen hooded cloaks [4], and they had pierced their collarbones, run chains through them, and tied them to the pillars of the mosque. When he saw that, he came to his mother and said: ‘Mother, weave for me a hair-shirt and a woolen hooded cloak…’”

99-/7191 -3- Sulaym ibn Qays al-Hilālī in his Book: In a report of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) with Mu‘āwiyah, he said to him: “O Mu‘āwiyah, we are a Household [1] for whom God has chosen the Hereafter over this world, and He has not approved this world as a reward for us. You and your minister and your little companion heard the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his Household) say: When the sons of Abī al-‘Āṣ reach thirty men, they will make the Book of God a means to crookedness, the servants of God slaves, and the wealth of God something rotated among them. O Mu‘āwiyah, the Prophet of God Zakariyyā was sawn asunder with saws, and Yaḥyā son of Zakariyyā—his people killed him while he was calling them to God, Mighty and Majestic—this is due to the worthlessness of the world before God. Indeed the allies of Satan have fought the allies of the All-Merciful. And God, Mighty and Majestic, has said in His Book: ‘Surely those who disbelieve in the communications of Allah and slay the prophets unjustly and slay those among men who enjoin justice, announce to them a painful chastisement’ [2]. O Mu‘āwiyah, the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his Household) informed me that his community will dye my beard with the blood of my head, and that I shall be martyred, and that you will preside over the community after me [3], and that you will kill my son Ḥasan by aggression with poison, and that your son will kill my son Ḥusayn—this to be undertaken by the son of an adulteress.”

Qur’an 3:21 (M. H. Shakir): Surely those who disbelieve in the communications of Allah and slay the prophets unjustly and slay those among men who enjoin justice, announce to them a painful chastisement.

99-/7192 -4- Ibn Bābawayh: With his isnād from ‘Abd al-Mun‘im ibn Idrīs, from his father, from Wahb ibn Munabbih al-Yamānī, who said: Iblīs went about canvassing the assemblies of the Children of Israel at their fullest, speaking about Maryam and slandering her with Zakariyyā (peace be upon him), until evil flared and the foul accusation spread against Zakariyyā (peace be upon him). When Zakariyyā (peace be upon him) saw that, he fled, and their foolish and wicked pursued him. He went into a valley rich with growth; when he reached its middle, the trunk of a tree split open for him, so he entered it (peace be upon him), and the tree closed over him. Iblīs came seeking him with them until he reached the very tree into which Zakariyyā had entered. Iblīs measured the tree for them from bottom to top; when he placed his hand upon the place of Zakariyyā’s heart, he ordered them, and they sawed with their saws, cutting the tree and cutting him in its midst. Then they dispersed from him and left him; Iblīs vanished from them when he finished what he wanted. That was the last they had of him. Zakariyyā (peace be upon him) did not feel any pain of the saw; then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent the angels, and they washed Zakariyyā and prayed over him for three days before he was buried. Thus it is with the prophets (peace be upon them): they do not change, nor does the earth consume them, and they are prayed over for three days, then they are buried.

99-/7193 -5- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from al-Naḍr ibn Suwayd, from Yaḥyā al-Ḥalabī, from Hārūn ibn Khārijah, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), about the story of Bukht Naṣṣar and his killing of the Children of Israel. He said: “When Bukht Naṣṣar arrived at Bayt al-Maqdis, he saw a mound of earth in the middle of the city and there was blood boiling in its midst; whenever earth was thrown upon it, it boiled forth again. Bukht Naṣṣar said: What is this? They said: This is the blood of a prophet of God whom the kings of the Children of Israel killed; his blood is boiling, and whenever we throw earth upon it, it comes out boiling. Bukht Naṣṣar said: I will surely keep killing the Children of Israel until this blood grows still. That blood was the blood of Yaḥyā son of Zakariyyā (peace be upon him). In his time there was a tyrant king who fornicated with the women of the Children of Israel. He would pass by Yaḥyā son of Zakariyyā (peace be upon him), and Yaḥyā said to him: Fear God, O king; this is not lawful for you. One of the women with whom he fornicated said to him when he was drunk: O king, kill this man. He ordered that his head be brought, and the head of Yaḥyā (peace be upon him) was brought in a basin; the head spoke to him, saying: O man, fear God; this is not lawful for you. Then the blood rose in the basin until it overflowed onto the ground, where it boiled forth and did not subside. Between the killing of Yaḥyā and the coming of Bukht Naṣṣar there was a hundred years; Bukht Naṣṣar went on killing them, entering village after village and killing the men, women, children, and every animal—while the blood boiled and did not grow still—until he annihilated them. He said: Is anyone left in this land? They said: An old woman is in such-and-such a place. He sent for her, struck her neck over the blood, and it subsided; she was the last remaining.”

And the report is long; we mentioned it in full under His saying, exalted is He: “Or like him who passed by a town, and it had fallen down upon its roofs,” from Sūrat al-Baqarah [1].

99-/7197 -1- His saying, exalted is He: “And she who guarded her chastity … up to ‘there is no denial of his striving’ [91–94].” ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said, regarding His saying: “And she who guarded her chastity”: Maryam; no man looked upon her. His saying: “So We breathed into her of Our Spirit,” he said [2]: a created breath—meaning, from Our command. His saying: “So whoever does good deeds while he is a believer—there is no denial of his striving,” i.e., his striving is not rendered void.

Qur’an 21:91-94 (M. H. Shakir): And she who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her of Our Spirit and made her and her son a sign for the nations. Surely this your community is a single community, and I am your Lord, therefore serve Me. And they broke their religion among them: to Us shall all come back. Therefore whoever does good deeds and he is a believer, there shall be no denial of his striving, and surely We will write (it) down for him.

99-/7198 -2- His saying, exalted is He: “And it is forbidden to a town which We have destroyed that they shall not return” [95]. ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Ibn Sinān, from Abū Baṣīr, and Muḥammad ibn Muslim from Abū ‘Abd Allāh and Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon them both), who said: Every town whose people God destroyed with punishment—they do not return in the Raj‘ah. This verse is among the greatest proofs for the Raj‘ah, for no one among the people of Islam denies that all people shall return to the Resurrection—those who perished and those who did not perish. So His saying “they shall not return” means in the Raj‘ah; as for to the Resurrection, they will return until they enter the Fire.

Qur’an 21:95 (M. H. Shakir): And it is binding on a town which We destroy that they shall not return.
