Chapter of Virtue of Ayat-ul-Kursi
English: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from Humayd b. Ziyad, from al-Khashshab, from Ibn Baqqah, from Mu‘adh, from ‘Amr b. Jumay‘, who raised it to ‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon him), said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: Whoever recites four verses from the beginning of al-Baqarah, Ayat al-Kursi, the two verses after it, and three verses from its end, will see nothing he dislikes in himself or his wealth, no satan will come near him, and he will not forget the Qur’an.
English: From him, from several of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali, from al-Hasan b. al-Jahm, from Ibrahim b. Mihzam, from a man who heard Abu’l-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi when going to sleep will not fear paralysis, God willing, and whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, no venomous creature will harm him. [1]
English: And from him, from Humayd b. Ziyad, from al-Hasan [2] b. Muhammad, from Ahmad b. al-Hasan al-Mīthamī, from Ya‘qub b. Shu‘ayb, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded these verses to descend to the earth, they clung to the Throne and said: O Lord, to where do You send us down—to the people of offenses and sins? So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to them: Descend. By My might and My majesty, no one from the family of Muhammad and their Shī‘a recites you after what I have made obligatory upon him [of the prescribed prayers in every day] except that I look upon him with My hidden eye seventy times every day, I fulfill for him in every glance seventy needs, and I accept him despite what sins are in him. And they are: Umm al-Kitab (the Opening), “Shahida Allahu annahu la ilaha illa Huwa” [4], Ayat al-Kursi, and the Verse of Dominion (al-Mulk).

Abi’l-Miqdām, who said: I heard Abu Ja‘far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) say: Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi once, Allah will turn away from him a thousand disliked things of this world and a thousand disliked things of the Hereafter; the least disliked of the world is poverty, and the least disliked of the Hereafter is the punishment of the grave.

Then he heard him recite: “Qul huwa Allahu Ahad” [1], and said: He has believed and is secure. And he heard him recite: “Inna anzalnahu” [2], and said: He has affirmed and has been forgiven. Then he heard him recite Ayat al-Kursi, and said: Excellent, excellent! This person’s release from the Fire has descended.

Translation (M. H. Shakir): Surely We revealed it.
English: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Jamil b. Darraj, from Muhammad b. Marwan, said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of what the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) used to say when he went to his bed? I said: Indeed. He said: He used to recite Ayat al-Kursi and say: In the Name of Allah, I believe in Allah, and I disbelieve in the Taghut. O Allah, guard me in my sleep and in my wakefulness.
English: Al-‘Ayyashi, from ‘Abdullah b. Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: Everything has a pinnacle, and the pinnacle of the Qur’an is Ayat al-Kursi. Whoever recites it once, Allah will turn away from him a thousand disliked things of the world and a thousand disliked things of the Hereafter; the least disliked of the world is poverty, and the least disliked of the Hereafter is the punishment of the grave. And I indeed seek its help in climbing the staircase.
English: (Amali of the Shaykh) with his chain from Abu Umamah al-Bahili, that he heard ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: I do not think that a man whose intellect has attained Islam and has been guided in Islam would pass a night—in the darkness of it—I said: And what is its darkness? He said: All of it—without reciting this verse: “Allah—there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent...” He recited the verse up to His saying: “and their preservation tires Him not, and He is the Most High, the Great.” Then he said: If you knew what it is—or he said: what is in it—you would never leave it in any state. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: I was given Ayat al-Kursi from a treasure beneath the Throne, and no prophet before me was given it. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said: Never have I passed a night since I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) without reciting it. Then he said: O Abu Umamah, I recite it three times at three different times every night. I said: And how do you recite it, O cousin of Muhammad? He said: I recite it before the two raka‘ahs after the last ‘Isha’ prayer. By Allah, I have not left it since I heard this report from your Prophet until I have related it to you. Abu Umamah said: By Allah, I have not left reciting it since I heard the report from ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him).
Translation (M. H. Shakir): Allah—there is no god but He, the Ever-living, the Self-subsisting by Whom all subsist; slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is His; who is he that can intercede with Him but by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they cannot comprehend anything out of His knowledge except what He pleases, His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of them both tires Him not, and He is the Most High, the Great.

English: And from al-Ridā (peace be upon him), from his forefathers, he said: ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said: If any of you has a need, let him set out early to seek it on Thursday, and when he goes out from his house, let him recite the last part of Surah Āl ‘Imrān, Ayat al-Kursi, “Inna anzalnahu” [1], and the Mother of the Book—for in them are the needs of this world and the Hereafter.

Translation (M. H. Shakir): Have you not considered him who disputed with Ibrahim about his Lord, because Allah had given him the kingdom? When Ibrahim said: My Lord is He who gives life and causes to die, he said: I give life and cause death. Ibrahim said: So surely Allah causes the sun to rise from the east, then make it rise from the west; thus he who disbelieved was confounded; and Allah does not guide the unjust people.
English: Al-‘Ayyashi, from Abān, from Hujr [2], from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) opposed his people and disparaged their deities until he was brought before Nimrod, and he debated them. Ibrahim said: My Lord is He who gives life and causes to die. He said: I give life and cause death. Ibrahim said: Indeed, Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west. Thus the disbeliever was confounded, and Allah does not guide the unjust people.
English: From Abu Basir, who said: When Yusuf entered upon the king, the king said to him: How are you, O Ibrahim? He said: I am not Ibrahim; I am Yusuf son of Ya‘qub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim. He (the narrator) said: And he (the king) was the companion of Ibrahim who disputed with Ibrahim concerning his Lord. He said: And he was a youth for four hundred years.

Sadir, from a man among the companions of Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: The people with the most severe punishment on the Day of Resurrection are seven persons: the first is the son of Adam who killed his brother, and Nimrod son of Canaan who disputed with Ibrahim regarding his Lord.
